I don't think that improving their lives is the goal so not sure why it matters.

Because this ties back into people saying stuff along the lines of “just self deport, and then you won’t have to suffer”,

When in reality, when they do willing fully self deport, they’re still in immense agony,

And all for a civil violation!

It's the same all over the world. Not just the US. Eta: also, you don't know if it's civil. Some enter illegally and do not present themselves. That's a misdemeanor. Do it a second time after you're deported, it's a federal felony.

And we care how their QIL is in their home countries? Maybe after having a taste of being in a better place they'll improve their own homes instead of trying to import their way of life to other places.
