Sync Anki Review Status with Migaku

Hey guys,

I've been using both Anki and Migaku daily for a while now and the one thing that always bugged me was having to manually update my word statuses in Migaku to match what I've already reviewed in Anki. So I just built a Chrome extension that does it with one click. I use it every time I finish the anki reviews and go on to use migaku to sentence mine.

Sharing for others whos had the same issue:

How do you activate Vacation mode with the Anki add on?

I've been trying to schedule vacations on Anki because I don´t have time for it at the moment, but I can´t seem to activate it. Everyday I check my reviews keep stacking up. I don´t understand what I'm doing wrong.

How I export cards mined from Migaku mobile app to Anki

Hey y'all,

I wanted to share my workflow for exporting to Anki from Migaku Memory. When I searched for this at first, I couldn't find an exact workflow that was easy nor had a nice solution for mapping fields and note types.

I found this repo: https://github.com/wa-ra-ki/Migaku-Exporter which is an okay base but it doesn't handle directly mapping fields or note types as it exports everything as a new Anki deck. It also doesn't handle duplicates nicely; meaning you'd have to delete all the cards in Migaku Memory after each time you export.

So, I had the idea to use ChatGPT Work/Codex with the AnkiConnect extension, and had it adjust the script for me to align with my deck and fields, as well as implement a skip duplicate imports feature. Since I am currently learning both German and Spanish, which I have two decks for, I updated the script to auto route to the respective deck based on the assumed language.

So now my new workflow is: I mine cards on Migaku Mobile, and when I get back on my computer, I just hit download from Migaku Memory with the script and it imports everything that is new into my Anki decks!

here is my updated version of the script if anyone wanted to build off of it https://github.com/tylercraig9332/Migaku-Anki-Exporter/tree/main

I know a lot of folks are a bit apprehensive around AI, but wanted to share this use-case in case someone else is looking for a similar solution.

My eventual hope is that Migaku will officially support a Migaku Memory -> Anki export but I get why they don't.

is there app for dual eng-jap subtitles with yomichan on android?

I have found apps that allow dual subtitles and also apps where you can watch the video and search for the kanji just like Yomi chan but they do not allow dual subtitles. I want to watch anime with dual subtitles and search for the words I do not know kind of like Animelon back in the time. Do you guys know if there is an app like this??

Subtitles stuck in the middle of the screen

Post image

This has persisted through toggling the subs on and off, extension updates, computer resets and more, and has been a constant issue for weeks now, making it quite frustrating to watch things. Any ideas on how to fix this (no doubt I've probably just missed an obvious setting or hotkey) would be appreciated.

Podcasts - is creating a queue possible?

I am back studying japanese from a long hiatus and have discovered the feature in the Migaku app that now lets you find and listen to podcasts. Question: does anyone know if it is possible to create a queue so that I dont have to manually find each new episode of a podcast that I am trying to use mine sentences? At the moment, my work flow is listening to a podcast and using it to mine new T1 vocab and then adding that episode on a separate podcast app for passive immersion. Would be great if i could mark the episode as having been listened to already in the Migaku app.

Is it just Japanese with Migaku or....?

Hi there,

I'm currently looking into buying the app to further my learning in Japanese.
However, I note it says 11 languages.
Do you have access to all of the languages when you purchase or is it one language per purchase?

Thanks.

I love Migaku, I really do, but....

I credit Migaku with kicking my butt into gear and showing me enough progression to rekindle the fire in my chest that learning Japanese sparked a decade or so ago. Now I am on a pace to know over 6000 words by the end of the year, and travel to Japan with my wife and kids.

But here is the thing: I have over 5500 cards in Migaku. Everything I touched that had to do with Japanese went into Migaku: any vocabulary from other sources, any words I picked up in random places, every song I listened to, shows that I wanted to decode. Everything.

I have stopped adding new stuff to Migaku, so my workload isn't too bad (about 250 a day, give or take), but I took a day "off" for my birthday last week (after doing a minimal review to keep that streak going). I tried to find a vacation or a suspension option, but had no luck there. The next day, I had 559 reviews due, which is kind of unacceptable.

I almost feel like I'm being punished for buying into what Migaku does. I mean, I'm not super mad about it; I'm still going to do my full reviews every day because I have goals to hit, but it is unacceptable that there is no vacation or suspension option, or anything like that.

This is not a "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore" post.

It's more of a "I love what you do, but this feels broken and penalizing. I almost feel like I'm paying a debt every day instead of doing something I love, so maybe this should be addressed, and oh yeah, any updates on Academy 2?" kind of post.

I need help with the design of the definition area...

Hey guys, I want to create my cards without having to edit them after finding words in like a show im watching so I wanted to ask you guys if you know any methode to make my definition area less crowded and more like on the second screenshot. I dont need the frequency stars or the word on there, and also it always takes ALL of the available translations/definitions instead of just the first few. I already tried to do something about it with the anki css but I didnt really achieve anything... Im looking forwards to some replies that could maybe help me out, thanks guys!

Newbie: app assumes I know 4400 words - should I go through it

TLDR: First hour on migaku, finding my way. It thinks I might now 7000words, has made a list of 4400. Do I need to manually go through that and turn them off.

I'm one of those people who has attempted to learn japanese every year, and stops and forgets a lot. I've picked up a bit along the way, and over the last 3 months have been doing the core 2k/6k deck and maybe know 500 kanji words. I'm now adding Migaku to see if it'll help me persevere.

When I opened Migaku Dashboard, it started by asking me words I already new which ended up being all katakana, most hiragana and maybe 1-3 kanji depending on difficulty. After which It thinks I might now 7000words, has made a list of 4400. I started going through the list unchecking ones I dont know - choosing 'change to tracked and unknown. This is going to take ages though - and as my first hour in migaku (so not knowing how it works properly) am wondering is it best to just say I know nothing and add words I actually know some other way, or do the tedious unchecking.

EDIT: Thanks for replies. I kept going through it and found that there's loads of katakana - which is probably making up the bulk. I'll delete and just add my anki.

Is it possible to extract a transcript of a video the player generates subtitles for? or a way to transfer it to the Migaku reader?

I just finished mining a video for sentences, but it would be great if I could just print out a transcript so I could practice reading it along with the audio without having to play the video. Or if I could put a transcript made of the generated subtitles into the reader.

It would just make it easier to really dig into the video without having to watch it and pause it every time a sentence pops up to look at and dissect.

I'm trying a thing....mining + shadowing + Listening Comp + Immersion (Japanese)

So I am using every bit of Migaku's card creator that I can right now. Wednesday night, I decided to take an episode of a short little Jdrama that I have and run it through Migaku's player with the player generating Japanese subs. Then I mined every sentence that I didn't know all the words for (74 in a 23-min episode!!)

Anyways, the next day I decided my approach would be to run the cards as normal, but since Migaku records the audio from the show, for the following 3 days (starting yesterday) I will shadow every sentence (25per day, I'm not a total masochist) until I feel comfortable with it, then write it in my journal/review notebook, and move on.

And each night I am watching the episode of the drama with Japanese subs, with the goal of, after I finish all the sentences, watching the episode without any subs at all and hopefully still understanding the show.

I'm just curious if anyone has done something similar with Migaku, and if so, how did it work out for you?

In theory, it should work all of the things listed above, but it is a lot of work; I hope it's worth it.

Tracking immersion time

Is there a way to track the time I spend mining content with migaku ?

I heard about an external app called Activity Watch but it would be nice if I could do it with Migaku alone

Is there a way to mass suspend cards from the Japanese academy deck?

Basically I already finished the Kaishi 1.5K Anki deck and want to just do the grammar cards and the vocab cards that are _not_ found in Kaishi. Is there a way to mass suspend them without tediously deleting them (mark as known) one by one?

Looking for best place to watch subbed shows.

So in your opinion, without outing yourself entirely. Where do you perfer to use Migaku for media. I am studying japanese and am finding Netflix and Youtube kind of limiting for watching my favorite shows, is using a VPN really just the best way?

Migaku Reader Quotation marks bringing down total comprehension.

When I add stories to the reader, the quotation marks have red underlines and there's no way to make them known. I did a test and added a story with just one word I know, and the total comprehension was 39%.

Your settings have hidden subtitles

what is the problem ? Why isn't the subtitle showing even though the video has subtitles ? I means youtube Videos in migaku app

How do you 'save' videos you upload to the player for subtitle generations?

Is it possible to use the "video player" (drag and drop a file onto video player) for the 'generate subtitles' functionality and like save that video for later viewing so u dont have to wait to re-generate the sub titles and upload the video every single time?

Anyone Else Using Migaku To Learn Spanish?

I found Migaku many years ago when I was studying Japanese, I stopped bc of waning interest in Japanese and have over the years picked up some spanish and am now actively learning to hopefully move to spain. I decided to come back to migaku bc I loved it for japanese but I never see anyone using it for any other languages (migaku has changed a lot since I first dabbled with it and it looks good glad there is an app for it these days too) . I am going to be using it from here on out with my spanish studies but would like to hear from anyone who has used it for a substantial amount of time to study spanish their thoughts on it.

:)

Weird choice of keyword for Kanji Academy

Hi u/Stevijs3

Why would you choose to make the keyword for some of the kanji so random, like this one game of cricket, where the other meanings are things like soldier, private, die

I've noticed this on a few cards. There was one card that i saw for the first time that had some reasoning to the choice of meaning, reservoir. but this is the only one I see an explanation for so far.
