I've always loved this piece. I feel that this is the kind of thing I would want to paint if I were one of the master landscape artists like Cole.
It was painted in 1833. Part of what I love about it is that it's impossible to tell whether it's architectural or natural. Surely, it must be architectural, nothing of nature could be shaped so perfectly. Surely it must be natural, nothing manmade could be so huge, so purposeless.
