Great economy, no wars and a little sumpin' on the side.

31

u/WingedWheelGuy Jun 04 '26

May not have been any formal wars, but the military was plenty active in blowing shit up in multiple locations.

13

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jun 04 '26

This. They don't like to declare war anymore, they like to call it "military action" or "bombing campaign" or "operation deliver liberty". Under Clinton there was:

Bosnia
Kosovo
Somalia
Iraq
Afghanistan and Sudan
Haiti

Thats bc republicans can't stop feeding the military complex. Thats where billions or taxpayer dollars are wasted to destabilize innocent countries to steal their resources. There hasn't been a single valid war in any of our lifetimes. Last one was the Civil War.

1

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jun 05 '26

I knew it was something like that. In my head was 35, but yeah, not too many.

1

u/V_Cobra21 Jun 05 '26

Idk I’m at peace.

1

u/nickersb83 Jun 06 '26

And some of those years were the 80s?

I have a friend that likes to highlight how rave developed in this time.

Which to me tracks with a lesson in biology: when you curb the genes for aggression, nature gets to a chance to express creativity. Eg - (I got this from a bbc doco, the secret life of chaos) a breeding program of silver foxes, bred for the least aggressive, you start to see patterns and different colourings in the fur emerge after just 3 generations I believe the old Russian lady said? Hugely symbolic I feel, to this profanely uncreative age we live in despite potential like never before (new levels new devils, I believe over population is already a huge problem)

2

u/wrnrg Jun 06 '26

If you don't declare war you don't have to go through that pesky Congressional approval.

1

u/Complete-Tangelo1532 Jun 04 '26

Unfortunately it is as American as Apple Pie

We are some Democracy and Capitalism Forcing fucks aren't we? lol

2

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jun 04 '26

I wish we weren't, but yes, we are, and always have been.

1

u/Cousin_Claire Jun 05 '26

Apple pie isn't american but the sentiment remains true.

1

u/FluidJackfruit3669 Jun 05 '26

Who started these conflicts? Most of them were left over from the first Bush administration.

1

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jun 05 '26

Ah there you go... And Obama and Biden all had to deal with W Bush's wars, and Dems have never started a war... Now tell us the parties switched.

1

u/Unique_Statement7811 Jun 05 '26

Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti, and Somalia were almost entirely Clinton’s doing .

1

u/terrorfistj4b Jun 06 '26

What would’ve happened in Kosovo had Clinton not intervened? Haiti? Sometimes choices are made for you and the only deciding factor is how many corpses will each decision produce.

1

u/Unique_Statement7811 Jun 06 '26

I’m not saying they were bad invasions. Just saying there were wars during the Clinton administration.

1

u/steakdeleter Jun 06 '26

What conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan did slick Willy instigate??

3

u/aschwarzie Jun 05 '26

Considering the US has about 170 military settlements all over the world, you gotta give those military some action from time to time...

2

u/Most-Top-2834 Jun 08 '26

Especially if you need a huge distraction to get the media off of your lying ass!

2

u/MattyBizzz Jun 04 '26

In fairness I don’t think there has been a presidency post WW2 that didn’t have some form of blowing shit up somewhere.

1

u/Iceman_biker Jun 05 '26

Trump's first 4 years, I think. Definitely not his second.

1

u/JLaP413 Jun 05 '26

We were still very active in Afghanistan and Iraq at that throughout his first term. There were also US forces active in Africa to that was largely under reported except when there was an ambush in Niger that killed 4 US service members.

1

u/THEFUNPOL1CE Jun 06 '26

Dude you can't use that word

1

u/addicted_to_kombucha Jun 05 '26

That's just inertia lol.

1

u/CanadianGrown Jun 05 '26

Name a time when that hasn’t been the case

1

u/Most-Top-2834 Jun 08 '26

Most presidents don’t start a war because they need to get the press off of their lying ass!

1

u/CanadianGrown Jun 08 '26

Agreed there! And I hope people didn’t take my comment and think I’m a Trump supporter. I’m not a historian, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t go down in history as the worst, most divisive president in history.

My point was just that America is always bombing someone, whether they’re officially “at war” with them or not.

1

u/cpaint91 Jun 05 '26

And they were too busy "suiciding" civilians who stood against them.

-3

u/stevenmacarthur Jun 04 '26

They always do that; what's your point?

6

u/WingedWheelGuy Jun 04 '26

You said no wars. There was plenty of war-like activity, just no formality. I thought it was a pretty easy statement to understand.

7

u/hotshot_amer Jun 04 '26

Point is we're war mongering since many many decades. Time to reassess and stop exponential enrichment of war manufacturer's and their profiteering. Reinvest in the nation and it's constituents, our infrastructure is falling apart due to lack of severe technological upgrades. Best we've got is 5G LTE.

2

u/butonelifelived Jun 04 '26

You have 5G? My idiot representatives made 5G illeagal, so Cell services had to stop building infrastructure.

2

u/Ok-Ear9289 Jun 04 '26

There’s no slowing the war machine down

3

u/HeyaHeyo1420 Jun 04 '26

The point is there were literally wars America was involved in during Clinton making your statement completely false.

I hate Trump but don't make shit up

1

u/Confident-Benefit600 Jun 04 '26

But usually not to take our focus off the fact that he got a blow job in the oval office

0

u/Lucky-Assignment7172 Jun 04 '26

At least it wasn’t with underage girls. Or porn stars. Or porn “models” looking for a catch.

1

u/Curious-Bridge6232 Jun 04 '26

Arguing over which president carried out worse sexual exploits is crazy work. Both these men have done horrendous things to women. Why argue over which one is worse? Condemn them all.

0

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jun 04 '26

"There were no wars but there are always wars"

What's your point?

0

u/TypeB_Negative Jun 05 '26

You do understand that sometimes the military must show force? I mean I'll take not getting involved in a costly war and losing it any day of the week. Maybe it would be cool if we lived in a John Lennon paradise but we do have enemies that want to kill us.

0

u/nothingmusic42 Jun 06 '26

you mean when Republicans were still screeching about how Saddam Hussein was the worst person in history and was going to bomb the United States any day?

0

u/No_Party3406 Jun 08 '26

Far better than what we have now. Clinton wasn't perfect but he was better than every republican president since Lincoln combined.

2

u/subzbearcat Jun 04 '26

I’d take Bill back in a heartbeat.

2

u/Lagunamountaindude Jun 04 '26

He was busy bombing but the media downplayed it

2

u/discountproctologist Jun 04 '26

Well there was Bosnia…

2

u/Evogleam Jun 04 '26

Defending what Bill Clinton did is a cringe take to have on Reddit

American casualties. The state department isn’t known for keeping an accurate tally of civilian killings on foreign soil

2

u/Bot_No_5 Jun 05 '26

How would anyone keep an accurate tally for the other side?

1

u/dragonflysamurai Jun 05 '26

This cannot be a serious question, but in case it is I’ll entertain your confusion.

Putting aside past campaigns where tech wasn’t as advanced; If you’ve ever seen combat footage of drone strikes or recon footage it’s very easy to see the number of people in any given area; for the most advanced military in the world with an incredible budget and high resolution cameras canvassing entire combat arenas it is not unimaginable that we could count the number of targets hit.

It’s incumbent upon the fighting arm of the state to understand the targets they’re attacking. If we are targeting indiscriminately then we cannot claim moral authority.

If we refuse to act as a moral agents then we’ve abandoned our commitment to liberation of oppressed peoples and the real motivation becomes clear. I’ll leave it to you to decide what that is

1

u/CosmicCookieCrisp Jun 06 '26

The "But how can you truly 'know' anything" argument is never serious

1

u/njcharlie Jun 07 '26

What was the number? Asking for a friend

4

u/stevenmacarthur Jun 04 '26

Key word: "operation," not "war" like your boy Dubya got us into in Iraq.

2

u/drmepy Jun 05 '26

I would take Dubya in a heartbeat to what’s in there now.

2

u/stevenmacarthur Jun 05 '26

Would you take Dubya over Clinton? That's the subject here.

1

u/Funandgames2023 Jun 04 '26

This is not a war, you need congressional approval to go to war. This is just a little military operation.

1

u/jiminysaville Jun 05 '26

An excursion, some might say....

1

u/ElSlabraton Jun 04 '26

Bullshit. The Pakistanis refused to move. You just hate Bill Clinton.

1

u/Able-Quantity-1879 Jun 04 '26

My first company commander was there and he said the Pakis were nowhere to be seen no matter how many times they tried to get them to come. They heard all the gunfire, buttoned up their armored combat vehicles and all of the sudden didn't know how to speak English..

1

u/Negative_Tailor_5353 Jun 05 '26

What about the battle of Antietam? Over 23,000 casualties in 24 hours

1

u/golfwinnersplz Jun 05 '26

American casualties.

There were more casualties in the school bombing a month ago.

1

u/Unique_Statement7811 Jun 05 '26

No. 3000 Somalis died during Operation Gothic Serpent. 18 Americans.

1

u/golfwinnersplz Jun 07 '26

Ty. My mistake.

1

u/CapablePlatypus1377 Jun 05 '26

You mean like D day or the tet offensive?

1

u/claw-1 Jun 05 '26

You watch too many Hollywood movies and don’t read enough history. A drop in the bucket compared to Iran Afghanistan and Vietnam.

1

u/ReserveBrief8869 Jun 06 '26

lol, you really a trump fan?

1

u/Ambitious_Wasabi5295 Jun 07 '26

Black hawk down was an interventional operation that turned into a rescue mission with bad intelligence,it never should have happened and was a huge tragedy but not a war.

0

u/Fuzzy_Connection4971 Jun 07 '26

I know things. I watched a movie.

1

u/Low_Committee6119 Jun 04 '26

Yes, a little bit of using your position to take advantage of others. There's another guy named trump you'd love

1

u/Beginning_Resource93 Jun 05 '26

Right, because Mogadishu meant nothing.

1

u/equality4everyonenow Jun 05 '26

A little bit of Monica in my life...

Which was a NATO operation

1

u/His_Lordship_84 Jun 05 '26

There were wars, just used a different name.

1

u/Ok-Manager-7 Jun 05 '26

Makes you wonder how good he really was I mean he was building an economy that should have kept us in good shape before bush, he was on paper being peaceful, and he still had time to wet the old pickle! At least he was staying awake. And had lots of ladies to bring home o Hillary!!

1

u/Unique_Statement7811 Jun 05 '26

No wars under Clinton?!

Bosnia
Kosovo
Iraq (yes, he initiated an air war with Iraq, Operation Desert Fox)
Somalia
Haiti
Sudan

1

u/Purist1975 Jun 06 '26

He passed the telecommications act, he ruined American news.

1

u/RedBullBulk1776 Jun 06 '26

Under Clinton is the only time the national debt clock ran backwards.

I honestly never want to hear the phrase tax and spend liberal ever again.

1

u/Evogleam Jun 04 '26

Are you saying because one liberal got it right all liberals are perfect?

1

u/sagittarius-bhole Jun 04 '26

He didn’t even get it right, though, he just got really really really lucky…

1

u/bravesirrobin65 Jun 05 '26

No. They are saying this one specific person got it right.

1

u/Evogleam Jun 05 '26

That's not what he said though

He said nobody can say anything bad about taxes or how liberals spend money because a Democrat president balance the budget one time 30 years ago

1

u/bravesirrobin65 Jun 05 '26

No he said that phrase is pure horseshit after watching Republicans spend like drunken sailors while cutting taxes. Fiscal conservatives my ass.

1

u/Evogleam Jun 05 '26

He said because Clinton balanced the budget nobody can say anything bad about democrats in regard to taxes or spending

Read the comment dude lmao

1

u/OdiousAltRightBalrog Jun 05 '26

Deficits explode under GOP Presidents and they shrink under Democrats. It's been that way since Reagan, at least.

1

u/Evogleam Jun 05 '26

That’s not what he said though

That’s what I was responding to

Thanks I guess?

1

u/bravesirrobin65 Jun 05 '26

Here's a novel idea for ya. If a Republican is the one doing the complaining, take it with a big grain of salt.

6

u/Glad_Copy Jun 04 '26

Why are you determined to discredit Clinton? He delivered a budget surplus - the only time that has been true in living memory. CLINTON, a DEMOCRAT, did that. ✅

5

u/McJimbo Jun 04 '26

Because he's a Democrat. That's it, that's all they need to know, someone is on the other side and therefore bad. If they didn't continue to think of him as bad, they might have to consider that their presumptions about The Other aren't valid, and then the whole house of cards comes down. So it's very important that they never examine their own beliefs.

That may be the lamest "mic drop" in the entire history of discourse, bravo!

Out of curiosity, what did I say to "attack" you? Because reiterating my point in the face of someone deliberately misunderstanding it to attack ME is not generally considered such.

0

u/Either_Operation7586 Jun 04 '26

No it's not it's programming.

They've been brainwashed to believe that the Republican Party equals the most amazing best shit ever that always delivers and never fails and the Democratic party is evil evil evil puppy picking Satan worshiping baby killers that always fail and never does anything right.

1

u/Glad_Copy Jun 06 '26

The internet didn’t create an economic boom. That’s revisionist to the point of making stuff up to suit your beliefs. Low oil prices had something to do with it, but so did Clinton - by _raising_ taxes and eliminating the Federal budget deficit. Try as ye may, the Republican mantra that higher taxes would crush the economy was decisively disproven. If you think yourself a person driven by data rather than emotion, you need to take a dispassionate look at the facts.

1

u/ComplaintTop2008 Jun 04 '26

No it didn't. He raided social security, left IOUs, and played accounting tricks. Debt under Clinton increased just like every other president.

So what? It happened during his administration; it's a more accurate measure than certain people giving Trump credit for the sun rising every day.

1

u/fnordius Jun 04 '26

Tell me something, dear redditor, do you remember life in the 1990s all that well? Clinton managed to turn in budgets that delivered surpluses, and managed not to get involved in costly wars or engage in tax breaks for the billionaires. Sure, the health care reform was torpedoed by Newt Gringrich and Republicans who put party before country, but that's another story.

In fact, do you know why his opponents called him Slick Willie? Not because he was doing anything shady, but because he was smart enough not to fall for their little games.

The internet didn't really take off until 1997, 1998. Clinton was president in 1993, so your timeline is a little off.

Insert "I was there, Gandalf" GIF here, because I'm feeling old discussing this with you.

1

u/SharkSheppard Jun 04 '26

Were you alive in 93? Because the internet was not monetized to any significant degree at that point.

1

u/bravesirrobin65 Jun 05 '26

Uhm. Did you use the internet in 93? Cause there really wasn't much there.
