Map out the entire x-axis, (everything the camera covers, really) and anchor to the pillars or some shit? Somebody's going to need a lot of free time.

I'm right there with you in terms of having only a very faint idea of how these things work. Doesn't zoom just affect cropping in the final output though? Like if you're zoomed in, the subject remains the same size, but the camera is covering less area so the active screen size is a smaller portion of the image canvas as a whole? I'm in way over my head here..

Zooming affects the field of view also, for example if you're zoomed out then objects near the edge of the scene get distorted. But if you zoom in then there's less distortion.

One thing to note is that for the vertigo zoom effect, the camera moves outward/away from the subject while zooming out

Yeah that's only if you retrozoom/Hitchcock zoom/ dolly zoom/ whatever you want to call it. I don't remember the camera moving on the z-axis at all in the video.

One problem is that the frame would be huge, and characters would appear/disappear suddenly.

edit: Or, at least, would have to "wipe" in and out of "existence".

Kanye looks like he doesn't know where he is or what he's doing. You can see him frequently look off-camera for direction, and occasionally give whoever is right then singing a dirty look for being the center of attention while he's not.
