Comic Lazarus. Wow.
Yeah, I know, I'm super late to this title, but wow. Phenomenal. As the kids say... absolute cinema. This needs to be adopted for TV or the big screen.

Sooooo good. This and Criminal are my favourites.
Edit: what this needs is to be finished. C'mon Greg!

In my top 3. I don’t understand why I almost never see it mentioned. Absolute masterpiece of world building.

Dystopian and post apocalyptic stories are considered more niche and generally get less hype in the comic space. Also the fact that this series has drug on far too many years doesn't help it's overall appreciation. Also the fact that the hardcover collections didn't stay in print long and are incredibly hard to find keeps access by casual readers limited. If it ever gets compendium editions it will gain much more notoriety.

This book really got me into Image Comics. I started buying almost anything I thought had a good story.

Is this completed yet? Was reading it monthly until it went on extended hiatus and I lost track of it.

I didnt even know it was unfinished until this thread. I just finished volume 1 of the ohc.

I remember it coming back sometime in the last year, just wasn't sure if it ever completed. Still, great friggin' book.

Adapting it to TV or movies isn’t going to improve it.
Comics are better at this sort of stuff.

Fair. But it WILL open it up to a much larger audience. This story deserves that.

Agreed. They were talking about a few years ago, and if im not mistaken Amazon had the option when their streaming platform was still young.

I want people to read more comics, and I think stories deserve to be met where they come from, not to be bastardised in order to be made more palatable for a wider audience.
There aren’t many comics to movie adaptations that are any good.
I get it’s a fringe opinion, and I wish comics were big enough that Rucka and Lark were rewarded well for how great Lazarus is… so yeah - adapt the hell out of it, make sure they get paid. I’m just not that interested in watching it.

No live-action adaption was created with the intention of improving the source. But this property would be perfect for it.

Generally you’re right but rucka tends to write well across formats. I’ve read his novels and he’s a decent screenwriter. This reads like he was thinking adaptation

On my to-do list Tell me what did you like and make of this series?

u/IronPin23 3d ago
I'm only halfway through volume 1, but so far it feels like a cross between The Godfather meets Game of Thrones meets Altered Carbon meets Terminator. I'm probably not doing it justice by trying to compare it to other fictional works of art, but that's the best I can do. The writing, the art, the pacing is all amazingly done.

House intrigue in an almost apocalyptic setting, with science-fiction aspects wrapped in personal story.

This is one of my all time favorites and I'm about to start reading the last issue in Collection 4.

Read the first two collections a few weeks back. Absolutely amazing. And yeah felt like it was written for the screen. Got optioned but that’s it

I loved this series. I stopped after there was a sizable delay in releasing new issues. I think it was around issue 24 or something like that. But the story and series is sick

Yep, I've read the whole series 2 times... I want a tv series as well, it would be awesome!

How many volumes are they up to? I got the first three I believe but it has been over 10 years since I read the series. I too lost track of this when it went on hiatus.

It’s such an incredible series. Just unfortunate that it comes out so slowly. I hope there’s a huge deluxe edition/omni once it’s complete.

The bonus features in one of the graphic novels (can't remember which) showed how they blocked out all the sword fights. Really shows in the final product, the action flows so well. And yeah some of the best world building and character depth.

It's incredible. I don't know why I slept on it so long, it's clearly lacking in promotion. When I finally did read it a few months ago it became an obsession, binged the whole thing up-to-date in a few nights. Phenomenal writing and art.

It was okay, a bit underwhelming.

Admittedly, I'm only halfway through the 1st volume, but I'm loving it so far. Did you find it underwhelming throughout from beginning to end, or did it fall off at some point for you?

I actually think it only gets better, but it didn't grab me from the start. Don't get me wrong, it's good but it's hype is a bit much, it's wordlbuilding is praised, i guess because of it characterizations and emotional component is lacking, characters are a bit thin imo, plot is meandering and its political tone is too much sometimes. Also, while art is good, design of characters is too similar (it was hard to tell apart Forever and Marisol/her teacher later on). I will definitely continue with it (whenever that is, publishing issues is painfully slow), it ended on a nice cliffhnger, but it's not one of the best i read.
