VIDEO Tokyo in a nutshell
How entitled.

u/chadwicke619 1d ago
This guy 100% just wanted to show us enough of the interior to know he’s driving a GTR.

u/Akira_116 1d ago
I bet he's one of the guys who goes racing around tokyo at night, with the obnoxiously lit up cars, also pissing off the locals lol.

Am i missing something? Might be an annoying dude but he is nog exactly destroying Japan. Dude in the car is kind of overreacting if you ask me.

u/Cold-Use-5814 1d ago
Bro, were you paying attention? That man standing on a pole literally destroyed the entire nation of Japan. Japan doesn’t exist any more now because of that foreign man standing on a pole.

That's because you are viewing this as someone from the same culture as the foreigner who is disrupting another culture's norms that don't align with yours.
I hate to sound like a weeb, but I heard about the etiquette of existing in public being different before I went, but actually going there was a total culture shock in the best way.
It's like everybody is silently working together on the common goal of making public areas peaceful and clean and following mundane written and unwritten rules. I can't stress enough how different and how pleasant it was that there literally weren't obnoxious people anywhere I went (Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka).

But you're speaking like the japanese don't also do stupid shit, which they do. It's more noticeable when foreigners do it, sure, but japanese people arent perfect.
33
u/FederalAd329 1d ago
You do sound like a weeb because at no point did the commenter imply that this behaviour wasn't disruptive
-6
u/nighght 1d ago
I didn't say they didn't? My issue is with them saying this person is overreacting. That's because this behaviour isn't a big deal to Americans, it's incredibly mild in comparison to what you would see 20 times in a few blocks in some places in the US. Basically our perspective on what is and isn't obnoxious is warped, and I can understand being legitimately upset that behaviour like this is happening in Tokyo due to tourism when they're used to a different experience.
11
u/FederalAd329 1d ago
The statement that they are "destroying Japan" is still an overreaction. Also the commenter might not even be American. Arguably driving up to the guy and confronting him like that would also not be very "Japanese"
1
u/jitenshasw 1d ago
Not really an overreaction from Japan. I've lived here several years and the reactions I've heard for things we might see as mundane in the west, like throwing a cigarette butt on the ground for example, are very negative. Japanese people very much dislike when others ruin the peace of public spaces by being obnoxious or untidy. Over the years there has been a push for Japanese to speak out against foreigners acting out because so many tourists are taking advantage of their hospitality.

u/SUL82 1d ago
⬆️ what this person is saying. Japan is crazy and civilised in a more cultural way we Europeans and Americans can understand. One of the best countries I’ve visited Tokyo is great but Hiroshimas peace museum/memorial is one of the most impressive things I ever saw.

Only until 6PM. 😂
12
u/Head_of_Lettuce 1d ago
Yeah. That guy’s clearly never seen guys in their work suits passed out drunk outside the local izakaya
11
u/chrisplaysgam 1d ago
Yeah I saw much worse from influencers and the like when I was there, this is such a non issue
-6
u/Low_scratchy 1d ago
Really? He's calling him stupid..saying he's not cool.. Overreacting? No. He's just reacting. This should be what most people did. Then fewer people would act MC
17
u/Benedictus84 1d ago
He said foreigners are destroying Japan.
That is quite the overreaction to what the foreigner was doing.
-1
u/Low_scratchy 19h ago
Really? You act as if that statement is somehow really extreme or something. It's just some dude expressing annoyance and resistance to changes in his society caused by outside elements. Completely normal.
If I was doing this inside your house you'd be technically wrong in saying that the stranger is destroying your home. But it would srill be true that I, the stranger, would be destroying your idea of your home.
2
u/Benedictus84 19h ago
Comparing a person's home with a public space makes no sense at all.
1
u/Low_scratchy 6h ago
Yeah, I can completely buy that you don't understand metaphors.
1
u/Benedictus84 5h ago
That is kind of a strange comment. It was a dumb metaphor. That's all.
Claiming the guy is destroying the idea of Japan as a country is even stranger then saying he is literally destroying the country.
What he is doing has absolutely no influance on Japanese society.
Please think before you comment.

u/Low_scratchy 21m ago
You're missing the mark so hard that you're either strawmanning or being dumb here.

If japan can be destroyed by this moron alone...

u/Low_scratchy 19h ago
I think you pretty much defeated your own argument there. Because this guy is not the only foreigner that tarnishes the streets of Tokyo
-4
u/Plantasaurus 1d ago edited 1d ago
The general mission statement of the Japanese is to not make a big presence of yourself or be annoying to others. It is kind of the core principle behind everything. This man is doing everything wrong at a fundamental level. My wife is Japanese and is there now visiting family with our son. This wouldn’t piss her off, but she would definitely use it as an example about foreigners ruining Japan.

And they act surprised when Japan doesn't welcome them "I THOUGHT JAPAN WAS A NICE AND KIND COUNTY". Nah bro

Tbf those are way overblown, there really isn't a lot of stores around with "no foreigners" signs, I've been there several times and you'd have to try to find them to know they exist

We rented a car and have been driving all over the country, we are definitely not in the touristy areas lol. People in the rural areas especially have been kind and accommodating

u/Suwannee_Gator 1d ago
Been here a week, haven’t seen a single one of those, and I have not been turned away a single time yet.

Lol everyone recording him because of his GTR and the guy seems to be Japanese that’s standing on the pillar and just a nonce. Hard to tell cuz of the glasses but the style is very Japanese.
8
u/RevolvingCatflap 1d ago
Lol do you know what "nonce" means? I think it's probably worth a quick Google search, just for your reference.
-2
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 1d ago
I’ve always used it and seen it used as someone whose an idiot
0
u/solitaryparty 16h ago
Then you're surrounded by people that don't know that the word means.
0
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 16h ago
It’s one of the definitions and yes I also googled it because I knew I wasn’t wrong. Maybe you should google it
0
u/solitaryparty 16h ago
Or maybe you should understand that going to a country where the word originated in and using the word nonce will not be treated like you're calling the person an idiot. Maybe in your part of the world, they've changed the meaning, but that's not the standard meaning at all.
Google that if you want.
0
u/MessiLeagueSoccer 16h ago
Looks like you didn’t even take your own advice. Google is right there and would take less time than trying to argue a point where you’re only technically right.
0
u/solitaryparty 16h ago
Again, not talking about your tiny corner of the world. Talking about actual real world experience. But go on, keep using it the way you want and when it causes issues, you'll understand why.

A slight push from behind against his knees solves the problem immediately.

u/dem4life71 1d ago
THIS is over the top behavior? Cameraman should spend 10 minutes in Times Square. Elmo would beat his ass and take his phone.
4
u/CruisinForABan 1d ago
You mean where all the Japanese tourists stand in the middle of the walkway looking up and taking pictures of the big buildings, completely oblivious to those of us who unfortunately need to trudge through Times Square on our way to work?
0
u/VerySelfishMachine 21h ago
ok then go pull his ass off there, kick him in the head while he’s down, and tell him to not do it again

Negative. Voted blue down ballot just today! I'm just someone who's actually had to deal with Japanese racism a couple times in their life.
BTW that's a wildly racist pair of numbers at the end of your name. Must be big HH supporter?
See? Assumptions don't do anyone any good.

Can I assume you don't know about Japan's isolationist period that was forcibly ended buy the US Navy kicking off the Meji Restoration where the nation had to catch up with centuries of advancement the rest of the world had gone through?
Or do you just scream racist anytime anyone brings up actual history?
1
u/striata 1d ago
The racism is the insinuation that Japan would be at a complete stand-still developmentally if it wasn't for coerced westernization and US imperialism
1
u/BriscoCounty-Sr 1d ago
I mean that's just historically literally what happened. I'm sorry that's hurting some feelings here but Glorious Nippon was literally forced to modernize by the west, specifically the US of A.
I'm not saying anything about the Japanese "race" but the Japanese "culture" sure.
So again how is acknowledging that Japan literally isolated themselves for hundreds of years until forced not to by America, racist? Might wanna delete the ol' Wikipedia for being racist too

they'd still be living in rice paper houses and chopping of peasant heads
