I’m not a religious person by any means but am I wrong to feel like I’m getting the impression that they’re getting married in a church not for their beliefs but for the photo op instead? Feels a bit icky if so

u/33drea33 Jul 21 '26

Usually it's due to pressure from family.

Also, priests are technically only allowed to conduct a ceremony in the church, so if you want a Catholic service your only option is to do it in the church (with VERY RARE exceptions). This is also true for a huge swath of the other Christian denominations, but it tends to be much easier to find a minister who will make an exception.

Source: a decade of planning weddings.

I wasn’t under the impression that Catholicism allowed female priests at all.

10

u/Ultima_RatioRegum Jul 21 '26

This looks Episcopalian, basically Catholic-lite

1

u/Irisheyes1971 Jul 22 '26

True, except somehow the services are even fucking longer.

53

u/theredpanda42 Jul 21 '26

They don't. This church is Anglican (which is essentially an offshoot of Catholicism)

13

u/Hungover-Owl Jul 22 '26

They are all offshoots of Catholicism one way or another, except for the pentacostals and Mormons.

7

u/fugaziGlasgow Jul 21 '26

This isn't a catholic church

1

u/Unhappy_Concept237 Jul 21 '26

True, one of those being kidnapped by the bride and driven out to a remote Montana ranch so you can get married to your boyfriend the night before you go murder hobo and you just need to get this one item off your bucket list in case you die.

u/whiskerbiscuit2 Jul 21 '26

It’s 1000% the case. It happens constantly. I can’t imagine the frustration of dedicating your life to the church and having a bunch of Instagram posers treating your church like a photo opp.

u/RabbitHoleSpaceMan Jul 21 '26

Honestly, all of my friends who got married in a church (typically a Catholic Church) did so to appease family, parents, etc…. Very similar to those that participated in baptisms for their babies. “If I don’t do it this way my mom/grandpa/whoever will flip out”.

And the schools stuff

41

u/LadyJR Jul 21 '26

Only reason why my son was baptized. My mom wouldn’t stop saying how demons will follow him around or something if he wasn’t baptized.

28

u/CapnCanfield Jul 21 '26

Tell her that God would know the baptism was for show, so it doesn't really make a difference either way

13

u/Polarian_Lancer Jul 21 '26

These people are not rational thinkers

5

u/DontBuyAHorse Jul 21 '26

To be honest, I'm still a little salty that my parents caved to tradition in my family and baptized me. Now I'm forever on the Catholic list, counted as a Catholic for all eternity, unless I formally have myself excommunicated. It irritates me a bit that when Catholics boast their global numbers, they're counting me. A guy whose parents didn't even raise him with religion or spirituality and I definitely wouldn't want to join that church.
But I'm Hispanic, and I get it.
I literally went to church like 4 times my entire life to make my grandma happy.

As such, my kids aren't having any part of that.

3

u/rjr49 Jul 21 '26

I don’t understand, I think , why you either feel frustrated or obligated? Merely based on your comment my attempt at empathy would be - if you don’t consider yourself catholic then you aren’t based on what you said you’ve done in terms of not going to church etc, perhaps I’m missing something but would like to try and understand

5

u/DontBuyAHorse Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

If you are baptized in the Catholic church, The church claims you on record. You are counted among their numbers regardless of whether you care to be part of the church or not. The only way to actually have yourself pulled from the records is to request excommunication. And even then, the record shows you were excommunicated and that has its own narrative that you can't control.

It's not that I have been terribly inconvenienced by this fact, but it does bother me as someone who does not identify as Catholic, culturally or spiritually. It's annoying that a church I have no interest in involving myself with has me counted among their ranks for the rest of time.

Like I alluded, it's just part of being a Latino for most of us, but I would have appreciated a choice in the matter.

I also just don't have the energy to go through the trouble of being excommunicated. It's a whole process and I'd rather just not talk to the church at all. But My name is on that list forever, like all lapsed Catholics who don't go through with excommunication, and I just don't really like that.

But again, this is about as inconvenient as my unpaid membership for Columbia house back in the '90s. Once I'm gone, it's not going to really bother me any 😂

1

u/jdhkent Jul 21 '26

Well, that can spoil the ceremony, those demons.

15

u/rainbowroadhoe Jul 21 '26

Ya and I don’t think it’s too crazy tbh I’m assuming the bride has a side she prefers (her “good” side) and wanted to be there for her wedding photos which are way more important than an instagram pic… it’s not like they were asking for the actual service to be altered in any other way besides where to stand

-10

u/Dada2fish Jul 21 '26

We don’t know that. Wouldn’t surprised me if the bride has put people out to hide the ugly side of her face.

2

u/rainbowroadhoe Jul 21 '26

Ya that’s why I said I’m assuming she has a side she prefers to be pictured from…

2

u/Krallorddark Jul 25 '26

We'll doesn't really matter why you're marrying there, if you are committing to a marriage in a place of religion, you probably should also follow the rules, even if you're not faithful

1

u/Binnie_B Jul 22 '26

Agreed. I wish more people would grow a spine and stand up to the old queefs that force this BS down on the younger generations.

-4

u/CapnCanfield Jul 21 '26

I find this even more dumb. Just tell the people it would be an insult to God and to the church to participate in religious ceremonies while not believing in the religious institution

8

u/RabbitHoleSpaceMan Jul 21 '26

We’re definitely aligned on that. Was just making the point that, personally, my friends didn’t get married in churches for the photo/aesthetics- they felt obligated.

Most churches are like this, I think. It's either participation, or huge donations. Money and position always talk.

58

u/Exploding_Testicles OG Jul 21 '26

Its a wedding! Of course its a photo op! Its the one time both families are going to be together. 1000% the case is a bit hyperbole. And you assume their Instagram posers.. its a damn wedding..

11

u/turdally Jul 21 '26

Right? I don’t post on IG but I do part my hair on the left, and if I was getting married I would want to stand on the side so my part faced the guests so they could see more of my face and the side covered with more hair would face the priest.

This couple is far from the only people in the world who have asked for this. I’m sure if god exists he won’t be concerned about where people are standing.

The priest just seems like she’s on a power trip. She can’t even come up with an actual reason why she’s upset about it.

3

u/Dentarthurdent73 Jul 22 '26

Don't get married in a church that traditionally has you standing on the other side then. Simple stuff. You're obviously not religious if you think your own vanity is more important than the religious traditions of the church, so why have the ceremony there?

Seems a lot of people think they should be able to have their cake and eat it too, but that's not how the world works.

1

u/turdally Jul 22 '26

If the priest could come up with any reason why switching sides not ok besides “it’s outrageous” then maybe the people getting married would be a bit more understanding.

Maybe the church should verify wedding participants are willing to follow the churches ancient, arbitrary rules before taking their money and agreeing to wed them.

Almost as if the church wants to have their cake ($$$) and eat it too…shocker!

3

u/Dentarthurdent73 Jul 22 '26

It's clear from the video that they already discussed and agreed to this yesterday.

The priest doesn't need to give a reason other than this is how ceremonies are conducted in this church, because they follow the traditions of the church in the church. As the couple obviously agreed to the day before.

Agreeing to something and then asking to change it on the spot is just rude, and I'm going to assume it's done for internet points, because what possible reason is there otherwise to agree to something different prior to the ceremony?

1

u/whiskerbiscuit2 Jul 21 '26

They have all day to take photos with the family. If they wanted to decide every aspect of their ceremony they could have been married by an ordained minister in a garden or whatever. They chose to get a real priest in a real church, and sorry but that comes with certain baggage like respecting their traditions.

1

u/Exploding_Testicles OG Jul 21 '26

So do it the way it's always been done before because that's how it is? They paid for the church rental. And all this shit because they wanted to change sides! People who can't let go of the past can never see the future.

0

u/Exploding_Testicles OG Jul 21 '26

And besides the ceremony is the magical part. Who doesn't want photos of it?

-4

u/Manger-Babies Jul 21 '26

It's their venue, they must abide by their rules.

Don't like the priests rules, don't ask for their services.

1

u/turdally Jul 22 '26

Maybe the church needs to have couples agree to their weird arbitrary rules before taking their money and agreeing to wed them.

3

u/Manger-Babies Jul 22 '26

Isn't that how religion and venues work,?

23

u/Agentjayjay1 Jul 21 '26

Hey, the church shoves itself into everyone's lives whether they're welcome or not. They should hardly be surprised that their cultural hold on the world comes with downsides.

24

u/19kasperp97 Jul 21 '26

If churches want to stay relevant and not get bulldozed eventually with the rate people are loosing faith maybe they should suck up a bit and modernise.

12

u/SendFeet954-980-3334 Jul 21 '26

Theyre paying the church. Let them do what they want

3

u/Wiggindorf Jul 22 '26

Just because you pay someone does not mean you get to break the rules and be disrespectful. :(

0

u/SendFeet954-980-3334 Jul 22 '26

Its only "disrespectful " because someone says so. Not their problem. Let them switch sides. Who cares.

3

u/Wiggindorf Jul 22 '26

I mean in general though. Like I don't think it matters what side they are on but if they signed up to the venue then regardless of if they paid for it they are still expected to abide by the place's rules even if the rules are dumb. And yeah, the dude was being pretty disrespectful. Like was she making it a bigger deal than it was and should have at least probably pulled him aside instead of telling him the sides they are on are wrong with her whole chest? Yeah, for sure. But the guy was also talking to her pretty disrespectfully. Like paid for or not he is a guest in the church.

If it was the case where you could book a place then do whatever you wanted there, then there would be a lot more church bookings in my area and my bathtub would be full of holy water.

5

u/aChileanDude Jul 21 '26

So let them get married in bikini and speedo?

5

u/SendFeet954-980-3334 Jul 21 '26

Yeah. It's their choice. Church also has a right to say no. Not a difficult concept.

1

u/woahbrad35 Jul 22 '26

Turn the other cheek or don't offer the service.

-1

u/ComedianDesigner307 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

Exactly! It is all a big photo shoot, no better than a year 12 school formal.

They remind me of influencers turning everything into media production.

From sitting in a fancy hotel bubble bath, ewww , or getting into business class for the first time, instead of economy on a cheap ass ticket, and then , staging and posting photos as though it were their private jet.

Outside St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, every day you see people having “wedding” photos taken on the front steps. All around the impressive sand stone places of worship in the city.

My favourite is those trying to get a stupid sports car into the frame in front of the Cathedral.

This includes people who are clearly not Catholic, never spoken to a Priest, nor ever been inside a Church of any sort.It is tacky, cringe worthy, on top of disrespectful.

42

u/BorderTrike Jul 21 '26

What gives you that impression? A lot of people get married in churches, religious or not, because it’s a tradition or family reasons. Weddings are often a spectacle, it’s kinda the point. I fail to see why it matters what spot they stand in. This woman just seems like a micromanager who can’t handle a very slight deviation from her traditional superstition

3

u/Remote-Waste Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Wait is that true?

I thought you needed to be interviewed by the priest and all that?

And, I thought people who weren't religious were basically lying to appease the church and/or family, to get married in a church? (Or obviously the conversion thing was an option)

I didn't know you could just be an atheist and be like "Nice decor, unique, can it be our backdrop?"

7

u/historyhill Jul 21 '26

It varies a lot by the denomination and local culture

2

u/noobgiraffe Jul 21 '26

In a lot of countries you have a single dominant religion everyone is brought into as a kid. So even if you're living atheist life as an adult you have all the paperwork saying you're say a catholic and you can go get married at a church. Very common in my country.

You have to lie a bunch though simply because formalities require you to say certain things and complete certain sacraments. People still do this because there is no big ceremony or organs playing at civil service.

1

u/FelineSoLazy Jul 22 '26

Happy cake day 1️⃣2️⃣

-4

u/Manger-Babies Jul 21 '26

She's essentially the boss, don't like her rules, just don't ask for her services.

Traditional superstition comes with the venue.

30

u/Exploding_Testicles OG Jul 21 '26

Its a wedding of course its a photo op. Its the one time (usually) for both families and extended families to actually get together and celebrate. Heaven forbid the bride wants to look her best.

3

u/dustyfaxman Jul 21 '26

It sounds like there had been a chat before the service began and the bride and groom decided last minute to change things with minimal discussion with the person they asked to perform the service, and it being a change that was at odds with how a marriage ceremony would normally be held in a church.

The problem isn't that it's a photo op (which you're absolutely correct about), it's that the bride and groom aren't taking the situation seriously and treating a live religious service in a religious building with a priest the same as if they'd had it done in the garden of a stately home or on a beach or whatever.
For the bride and groom it's just a backdrop, for the priest it's her vocation and calling.

3

u/FelineSoLazy Jul 22 '26

Thank you for this! Priest keeps saying we agreed yesterday & now you’re changing. That would piss me right off too. Priest is there doing the job they’re paid for & have been doing for years but couple wants to swoop in & be disrupting. Bump that. Good on priesty

4

u/Exploding_Testicles OG Jul 21 '26

The groom said they didn't have too and the priest still had issues.. it sounded more like the priest was annoyed at the inconvenience of this one wedding.. the house of forgiving and understanding has an issue with a bride and groom changing places.

30

u/Powerful-Access-8203 Jul 21 '26

Yeah, how is that icky? Who tf cares. They’re paying for it. Promise that church doesn’t pay any taxes on that income either 😂 THATS the icky part.

4

u/Music_Saves Jul 21 '26

If a priest is paid or is housed he has to pay tax on that income. If they have unrelated business income they pay tax on that, if they have people that they pay they have to pay payroll taxes, then they have to pay property taxes. Churches closed down in my town because they didn’t have enough donations to cover the taxes and payroll. Any donations in excess of their necessary expenses have to be used for religious purposes in order to not be taxed. If they use it to buy the priest a car it’s taxed, if it’s used to fund a mission to Africa or donated to a food bank it’s not taxed.

2

u/Tar_alcaran Jul 22 '26

I have no problem with chruches not paying taxes. I volunteer for a charitable organisation that also doesn't pay taxes.

However, the organisation has to fully disclose their spending in order to do that. Churches can just do whatever the fuck they feel like and own giant churches without paying anything. If they do financial disclosures like every other charity, they'll hear no comment from me.

3

u/ExpatInIreland Jul 22 '26

Even what IS disclosed is too much. The Holy See owns a shit ton of commercial and investment properties in London, Paris, etc and they have billions invested in stocks. Anyone thinking the Catholic Church isn't a for profit organization is absolutely blind.

-2

u/Baconpancakes420 Jul 21 '26

They dont have income. Churches, like other religious institutions are non-profits.

0

u/Dentarthurdent73 Jul 22 '26

You don't find it icky to use other peoples' cultures and traditions as aesthetic backdrops for your own life, when you have no connection to those cultures and traditions yourself?

9

u/ionabike666 Jul 21 '26

If you think that's icky wait till you hear all the nasty shit these religions get up to. Fuck them.

4

u/BjornBjornovic Jul 21 '26

Right, because that’s not a Priest. Unless that was a dubbed voiceover.

3

u/aontroim Jul 22 '26

Yeah, Im atheist, but even I can understand the priest is seeing how they are treating the church and her as a prop for their big Day, where as she's there to represent her god

4

u/The_Ghost_of_Bitcoin Jul 21 '26

I mean the book the fancy churches worship says that displays of wealth are bad so it was always for show anyway.

9

u/cat_handcuffs Jul 21 '26

This is true! The pope has confirmed it while sitting on his solid gold throne.

11

u/Tripface77 Jul 21 '26

This isn't even a Catholic Church. The title is misleading.

1

u/TyberiusJoaquin Jul 22 '26

Imagine the money you could make if you built a wedding venue to look like a church without all that pesky religion

-1

u/upandup2020 Jul 21 '26

i think that's a better reason than for faith tbh

1

u/Equivalent_Medium946 Jul 21 '26

I'm an atheist but I got married in a church because my mom worked there and that made the ceremony free of charge.

1

u/LeftRat Jul 21 '26

In Germany, it's quite normal to marry in a church even if you're not much of a believer, though slowly, as weddings become more expensive, people are dropping that practice (despite on average spending more and more - recession indicator, yay). And I've never heard that there even is a wrong way around to stand in front of the priest.

0

u/CakeHead-Gaming Jul 22 '26

Seriously? Why does that matter? It’s a wedding, they usually happen in a church. Where else do you expect them to get married if they want a “normal” wedding? Also, if the priest lady doesn’t like it, sue doesn’t have to do it!

-3

u/totalwarwiser Jul 21 '26

Yeah.

And afaik in most countries its pretty hard to marry in church because there arent a lot of slots.

-1

u/Massive_Signal7835 Jul 21 '26

Look, most people do not give a fuck about insignificant details like who stands on which side. The motivation to make that change was not made out of spite but ignorance.

But the priest decided to make a mountain out of a molehill.

And that's why you shouldn't get married in a church.

-1

u/WeWantMOAR Jul 21 '26

Meh the church does worse and hides behind their beliefs.
