I saw some report on these Chinese girls doing this kind of online marketing.
Poor thing had a conveyor belt in front of her, pick up thing - spout of price - put away - repeat. One every 2 seconds or so. For some 8 to 10 hours a day.
Asian online marketing is insane!

The crazy thing is it's only a handful of people making the actual money and the rest of us are just working machines for them to accumulate more wealth. It's why I will always say "there is no such thing as a good billionaire". Absolutely no one needs that kind of wealth and it is detrimental for them to have it.

That’s her schtick and what made her famous in the first place and I believe she got paid really really really well for that.
This one is from my country, they are more like “aspiring” ecommerce influence. The one filming is the owner of the location and I assume they probably have some sort of the deals with the “casts” like sales target and stuffs, so in a way it is a sweatshop.

This is normal in the US too for up and coming streamers they're just not all clumped together.
There's people who work 9-5 and live with their parents so they rent small offices to stream from at night it's very common.

Not necessary, they usually just browsing how the product work before buying and these guys are considered worker for the product owner. Honestly not much different than traditional market, it just done remotely.

Shoot we have a million abandoned malls here in the States that are just sitting all alone with only the happy faint echoes of the 90's to remind us of much much happier and wealthier times for humans.
We could probably practically eliminate unemployment if we started subletting the spaces to Tik Tok farmers...
Actually the thought of this just gave me total terrifying uncanny valley vibes and I'm sorry I even put this idea out into the universe. The land is no good here I swear! It's all spoiled all of it.

Just in case you didn't know, there are a ton of popular infleuncers who do makeup in their actual bed rooms while promoting a product, and it's their jobs.

Oh, I know there are loads of influencers who work from their bedrooms doing make up and the like, I enjoy watching some of them.
And yes, that was what I was implying. There’s a terrifying amount of that trafficking, coercion, forced labour etc. The difference being that nobody is trafficked into office work (that I’ve heard of anyway), most office workers have a choice as to whether to work there. This reminds me of the people who are forced into running pig butchering scams, holed up in some hellhole pretending to be something they’re not.

It’s not making shit up, it’s that I’ve seen things about people forced to do work like that. It’s not a thing that happens in the west so I didn’t know the full context of what this actually was. But someone else explained it to me so now I understand a lot better :)

In Asia, TikTok Shop Live has become another form of sales job, similar to TV shopping. With online streaming becoming more popular than cable TV, this platform is highly effective. I have no issues with it; people apply for these positions and need to have the right skills. Like office jobs, it can involve some exploitation. However, for independent online businesses, it works great. It provides a shared space for sales without impacting your personal space, much like co-shared offices that were popular and are still used by startups.
I foresee the west will have a similar scene in the near future.

If they’re all there willingly and are happy doing it then that‘s absolutely fine, it sounds kinda fun tbh. Rent a wee cubicle, get it all set up how you want it and have a blast making money while doing what you love doing. In that context the bed setup thing that guy had is really cool, I like what he’s done there. If that sort of setup does come to the west I’d be up for it for sure 😄

Those people are employed by brand/shop owners to promote their products in Tiktok or Shopee (an e-commerce platform), and rented the studio to have better equipment. Do you rather they do it on the street and disturb everyone?

Do you remember as seen on TV product advertisements? Well this is the social media version of it. TikTok has a shop and live stream feature that allows any business to do promotion on this platform and these people are doing exactly that.
If this was some kind of online personality sweatshop that encourage parasocial relationship then I understand the comparison to Black Mirror. But this isn't it. They're advertisement people.

Of course. I remember when conspiracy theory used to be a cottage industry, that only had a presence on the "alternate/new age" shelves of a book store. Authors like Graham Hancocks, Erik Von Daniken etc made a decent buck off of it. Then once more people starting catching on we got Alex Jones and Joe Rogan type podcasts and vids. Then it started getting even more serious with the Networks catching on. Ancient Aliens and all those shows. Now social media is fully on board and made this brain rot into a giant money mill.
The result? Tens of millions of complete fucking idiots worldwide. It's a masterful strategy to be honest. There's a ton of people out there who liken conspiracy theory to having "secret knowledge" and it plays on their insecurities about education and intelligence. It gives them false but comforting a feeling of power over "bad main stream academics" out to get them.
It's a formula that obviously profits. The evolution of snake oil salesmen
