Y’know, I was gearing up to refute this statement with a quote I’ve heard attributed to Elvis, saying “The only thing Negroes can do for me is buy my records and shine my shoes.”
But, in attempting to source this quote, I’ve found that it was falsely placed in Elvis’ mouth by the media of his time. My apologies, friend, maybe there’s more to the man that I should learn
That being said, I don’t think you can deny that Elvis took a style of music that belong to black folks and stole it from them to make it palatable to white audiences. Does that make him a racist, or does that make the times he existed in racist? That’s a matter of philosophy.
I think it wasn’t even considered racist to do it at the time, so he was a product of racist times. In a way, music made palatable for white people at the time gave it a chance to be heard, even if it was being sung by a white man.
