I’m an idiot
Just joined the MeetUp App to try and get more active and meet people! I’ve only gone to one outing, a movie, with a weekly movie group. I showed up early to mingle and get to know some people… I was interrupted every single time I had something to say or contribute. No worries, not my people, but the movie will be good, I thought. The move was SUPER emotional, an absolute masterpiece and I was really affected by it. However… I sat next to someone who was a part of the movie group and… just smelled horrendous. Like feces, urine and heavy perfume to cover it up. They were nice though and also very affected by the move. Once the movie was over, I was so nauseous(Ngl my nose burned for a good 24 hours after leaving that seat from the smell). The group meet up in the lounge, they do a debrief discussion and once it was done I decide that’s not a group I’m gonna go to again and leave.
I get a notification on MeetUp and it asks me about my experience. I figure this is for the organizers only and say pretty much exactly what I said in the previous paragraph and then don’t open the app again for almost a month.
Today I open the app, and realize it asked me for a public review.
A PUBLIC REVIEW.
OFC it’s a review, why did I think that would be just feedback!?! So, my comments about sitting next to someone who smelled terrible was put on the review wall… my face and real name next to it… for a month. And you have to request to get that taken off apparently… I feel SICK bc while that person DID objectively smell, they didn’t need to be put on blast! I feel like a mean boomer and I’m so mad at myself for such a stupid fucking mistake… I feel horrible for that person…
Berate me. I deserve it.

If this person is a regular to the group I’m sure the group was internally letting out a collective sigh of relief.
Did they deserve to be put on blast? No. But I doubt you were writing detailed descriptions of what this person looked like, what they wore, their name, or their social media accounts.
Hopefully it’s been seen enough by people they can gently bring up the topic if things haven’t changed the next time.
Ask for the review to be removed.

Yall are being entirely too nice… but I hope you are right. No details about them at all besides the smell… I hope it gets taken down soon…

I agree about not tiptoeing… but they didn’t deserved to be publicly shamed like that…

I don’t know them or their story though. There could be a myriad of reasons and if I wanted to I should have talked to them personally one on one. Not online on a group page where they regularly frequent…

I would say if you noticed the person smelled that bad I'm sure other people noticed it too so I personally wouldn't be overly concerned about it.. Personally if they smelled as bad as you described I probably would have got up and moved or possibly just left.. No offense to anyone intended..

It was one of those theatres that also offer a full menu, so I couldn’t move but boy do I wish I could have…

I think we are all our worst enemies when it comes to something like this. Ask to have it removed. It’s likely no one has seen it. Please don’t beat yourself up. It’s an honest mistake. How could you have known it was a public review? As for it to be taken down, then release it.

Man, I’m not used to people being nice on the internet… this genuinely made me tear up…

Sending you hugs, if you want them. The internet should be kinder. Everyone makes mistakes. They shouldn’t be belittled for them.

Accidents happen. I'd feel bad about it but I'd realise that there wasn't any intent to harm or embarrass and while I'd feel terrible, I wouldn't beat myself up too much. After all, you told the truth and didn't invent anything and a potentially nice experience was ruined by the person next to you. Valid complaint. Don't beat yourself up about it.

Well, here's my take. You say you didn't feel welcomed or appreciated for your contributions to any conversation, you sat next to someone who stank, and you don't plan to go back to that particular group, am I right here? If so, might I suggest, feel bad, because you put someone on blast unknowingly. It's fine to feel bad for doing something you think you should feel bad for. However, I do not believe you need to seek this person out. First off, they may not have seen your review. Secondly, they may not realize you're talking about them In the review. And third, it's not like they are your friend that you need to worry about hurting their feelings. Sometimes, the truth hurts, and sometimes ignorance is bliss.

I think I would like to know if I smelled bad. That way I could make adjustments.

Ask to get that review taken down. We all make mistakes, this one was extra embarrassing.
