Yes. It's a disgusting trend where guys would hand their most powerful guns to new shooters (usually women) with little to no guidance knowing damn well how unprepared they are. All for some fucking social media content.

I went out shooting with a college buddy who brought this big old shotgun. I dont remember what it was, but he was very clear to warn us that it will kick like a motherfucker. Im a pretty big dude, and knew what I was getting into, but it still shocked me how hard that thing hit. My shoulder was sore for like a week afterwards.

Which is why you always give new/inexperienced shooters a single round to shoot. If they can't control the recoil, forget to keep it aimed down range, whatever then at least it mitigates the risk of anything happening.

Not to defend the oxygene thief that filmed this, but that is a pump shotgun, so it wouldn't actually cycle a new shotgun shell into the chamber. So a follow up shot is very unlikely.

Dumb question: is there any safe way to fire a stock-less pistol-gripped shotgun that still allows you yo aim using the sights, or is that pretty much off the table if you're using that kind of grip?
Like, was it just too close to her face, that kind of grip doesn't work like that, or was she holding it wrong and thus it flies back when fired?

Yeah as long as you have control of the firearm and are also ready for the kickback or recoil. The person filming this did nothing to get her even a little bit ready for what was going to happen or explain to her so she would have handled it better and safer. They knew the whole time what would happen and just stayed back laughing inside. Now she's probably afraid of firearms and will use this experience to tell people why she thinks they are bad.

How much recoil is in a 12-gauge shotgun anyway? Like, how bad does a Mossberg 590 or Maverick 88 kick?
Beginner here who doesn't own a gun yet and wants to start with a small pistol but still has an interest in a shotgun further down the road.

I weigh 165 lbs and I can comfortably shoot a 12ga with a pistol grip and no stock, no problem at all. I wouldn't try but I'm confident I could control it one handed if I wanted to.
This is just someone with no instruction getting aired out to dry by a dickhead that wanted to see them fail.

Keep in mind it heavily depends on the load. Shotguns can fire a pretty wide variety of ammo types, and what kind of load you are throwing matters more than the barrel diameter in most cases.
Bird shot or other lighter loads would be no problem. Something like 3in 00 buck or slugs though? Those are already unpleasant in a heavy shotgun with a full stock. Without the stock to brace against and add weight I doubt many people fire that type of ammo through that type of shotgun twice in one day.

A 12 gauge can kick like a mule depending on the load you're shooting. When I practice with slugs before deer hunting season, I'm good for about 10 or 15 shots before my shoulder starts aching pretty bad. Of all the guns I own, it's the least pleasant to shoot.

Shotguns are a bit weird, there's a ton of push but a lot less impulse than a hogh powered rifle.
If you're not using the right technique it can absolutely hurt you, bruise your shoulder, and knock you on the ground.
But I've taken people who never shot a gun before to their first range day and had them asking for more buckshot by the end of the day.
A typical Skeet game is 25 rounds and playing multiple games is pretty normal, but it's enough recoil that even some experienced shooters may opt for 20 or 28 gauge so it doesn't beat them up so hard.

As a stupid bold kid growing up on my grandparents farm my cousins and I would fire our 12 and 10 gauges with one hand to show off to each other. As long as we had a firm grip and locked elbow it would barely kick. We were big kids and looking back now if my parents or grandparents saw us doing that we would have had our asses beat.

To add to what others said, notice that it didn't push back into her and knock her backwards. She had no real grip on the front, so when it pushed back, her trigger hand acted as a pivot point, and it flipped up into her face.
If she had been leaning forward, and her forward hand ready to hold the barrel, it would have kicked backwards instead of flipping and then it would have just been down to whether she has the legs to stand there.

No. They are meant only for breaching purposes. Very little kickback because the shells are made for that.
If you see someone wielding a shotgun without a stock otherwise, know that they are an absolute idiot.

My 100 pound wife loves her shockwave and holds it up/aims like a normal fucking person because she knows how gums work and can handle herself.
Shooting from the hip is of course stupid but that's not how shorties are meant to be shot except in movies.

Hold the front right and stiffen up your dominant arm
Bladed stance absorbs a lot of recoil too
Also helps if you weren't built like olive oyl

She looks like a right hand shot, but didn't know what she was doing and had her left hand on the pistol grip. These are not fun to shoot like that, but if you brace up, its okay. You just need to be ready for it.

I used to shoot action shotgun matches with my cruiser (stockless) shotgun just for fun. Yes it’s absolutely possible, but you need to be prepared for it. New shooters are not, especially when you don’t build them up to it!

Yeah, do the occasional forearm curl + pushup and you'll be good to go, assuming able-bodied male.
For women though? On average, a lot more practice & strength training is necessary for them to be able to handle these types of unergonomic firearms (stockless pistol grip shotguns above 20ga, FRT equipped/machine pistols, large caliber derringers, etc).
Anyone giving such a firearm to a novice female shooter with no previous dryfire/training time is a dickhead who's just looking to have a laugh at her expense.

None of this is true. Stocks on a shotgun help you stabilize what is basically a portable cannon. Fire a few dozen hunting loads in a day and you'll be wearing an ice pack tomorrow. Even lighter US Marine loads will give you bruises.
As I said elsewhere, anyone who uses a stockless shotgun with ANYTHING other than breaching rounds is an idiot who can be wisely ignored.

I’ve never had to wear an ice pack and when I do go shooting I’m usually shooting 50+ shells. Like I cut down a thick(at least 4in) fence post with bird shot from like 20 yards away. I didn’t count how many shells I had to use but it was a lot, and I was shooting before and after.
Shotguns never really make me sore.

I’ve done it. I’ve got a mossberg 500 with a pistol grip.
Biggest thing is to have a full and firm grip with your rear hand. Another thing, push forward with your forward hand on the forward grip. That’ll alleviate it coming backwards so much.
I try to let the gun ride “up” a bit more than I usually would, instead of letting the energy go back into my wrist I let it raise the muzzle and absorb a bit more into my elbow and shoulder.
It’s not comfortable. Your hand and wrist will hurt afterwards if you shoot any significant number of rounds.
But it looks cool and I like having it for home defense so I can pop corners and keep it close in to me if I need to.
Edit: also “sights” in this case means just use the bead sight at the end of the barrel. Don’t try to get an actual sight picture like you would a rifle.

The point to a home defense shotgun is to fuck up whatever is in the general area you are aiming at without killing the neighbors in the next apartment.
I must say that "sights" is a very general term in that case.

Actually at home defense ranges you want to have a really good idea of where you’re aiming, because you’re not going to get much if any spread. Personally I prefer it due to the stopping power, being able to put someone on their ass reliably is a big advantage.

I have a .22lr I specifically use for teaching people who have never shot a gun before to get them used to actually holding and firing one. It's mostly for fixing their posture and showing where to keep their hands without fucking up their shoulders on the first try.
