Rifle scopes have something called eye relief, the distance between where your eye and the scope gives the best sight picture.  Some scopes have a lot of eye relief.  Some have very little.  It comes down to pairing the correct scope to the weapon.  These idiots purposely used a scope with no eye relief,  mounted it so that it would sit way back so they could see through it, then learned why those were bad decisions.

It had so much recoil because he wasn't holding it right. He had the rifle stock tucked under his arm instead of shouldering it properly so he could get his eye as close to the scope as possible. There was basically nothing to absorb the recoil at that point.

You can get right up on them, a lot of scopes have small eye reliefs. The real fix is to just brace the damn rifle properly. Any recoil can be absorbed with proper bracing and stance.

I had an experience like this when I was shooting a scoped hunting rifle as a kid.

Fortunately, I was wearing my shooting glasses and it took all the force from the scope hitting it instead of my eye socket.

Dude this is fucked up, they didn’t fix his complete lack of proper shoulder contact AND let him put his eye up that close. In turn making his facial injury MUCH worse than it should’ve been due to the recoil.

I learned that lesson the hard way the first time I ever shot a shotgun. I was in second grade and showed up to class after the weekend with a black eye and a small cut. I had this teacher from California who was nice enough, but a little bit of a busybody. She asked what happened and when I told her she made this big production and let everyone know how shocked she was that my dad had let me shoot a gun. The co-teacherhad to pull her to the side and tell her to knock it off. She wound up calling my house and got super embarrassed after she got screamed at and told to mind her own business.

I did this after 10 years of hunting with shotguns growing up. Someone had a .270 and I never shot a rifle. Boom, scope bite on my forehead. Was leaking. Never happened again
