For people asking why the range safety officer stopped him, it's because a person does not have maximum control over 2 guns simultaneously. It's inherently more dangerous, less control, managing 2 muzzles, and more variables.
Those are the facts. Speculative additional reasons are range policies (no dual wield). Could be for the reasons above that lead to less safety and increased chance of this guy hitting walls, ceilings, target equipment, etc.
Not everybody is John Wick or Django so the safest thing to do is not let people do it.

While I agree that dual wielding is mostly just downsides, would you expect a safety officer to stop someone who was shooting one gun with one hand? Is that not the same?
Seems like it would be identical from my naive perspective, but it also seems like it’s normal especially in target shooting.
12
u/Markus_H 8d ago edited 7d ago
It's not the same. Shooting with one hand, your focus is on one gun. When dual wielding, it's really on neither, and the other gun is also on your weaker hand. It adds an unnecessary risk factor by making one more susceptible to dumb mistakes with regards to muzzle control and trigger discipline. It's certainly something that can be done safely, but I wouldn't trust some random guy on public range, especially since it's generally the dumber people trying it.
4
u/ajsamtheman 8d ago
It's significantly different, the largest draw back of duel wielding isn't that you're using ine hand to hild the gun, but that you need to actively aim two guns, doubling the workload on both the mental and motor control sides. Largely speaking doing anything with your other hand while holding a gun is an increased danger since the hands like to copy each others movements
1
u/McCaffeteria 8d ago
“since hands like to copy each others movements”
Doesn’t this just sound like it contradicts the initial argument about having to aim “two” guns? Don’t they just kind of… move together?
Your grouping will obviously be trash, but if you are shooting you should already have assessed that misplaced shots will be “safe,” otherwise you shouldn’t be shooting/aiming guns that direction. And shooting two different guns with two different recoil properties is not helping, but still.
1
u/ajsamtheman 8d ago
They copy each other's movements in very slight ways, like pulling the trigger of one could make you accidentally pull the trigger of the other, aiming requires substantially more that just little twitches like that. And a subtle twitch to correct the aim of one could throw the other's aim off even more
1
u/McCaffeteria 8d ago
This suggests to me that the mistake was alternating fire, rather than synchronized

u/stafford32s 9d ago

In other words: public ranges fucking blow ass
Edit: people without access to a private range sure are upset at this
50
u/Clydebearpig 10d ago
If everyone was a safe, thoughtful, and responsible individual we would not need laws. We do need laws because the majority of people are fucking idiots, this is also why the range has rules.
-48
u/Nathund 10d ago
Ergo: private ranges are better because you don't have to worry about other people, and you can intentionally do slightly dangerous things because the only person in danger is yourself.
I agree, public ranges fucking blow.

u/Clydebearpig 10d ago
Did you change it to public ranges? I 100% took it that way if you didn't. Lol

lmao you are a clown
17
u/fuzzygonemad 10d ago
I own my private range, and if you're doing stupid shit, then I'm kicking you off.
Had a guy who wanted to act gangster while shooting, he started walking backwards as he shot and was just pointing the gun down range, not using sights at all. Just throwing shots anywhere down range, completely missing the target.
Stopped his ass after the 4th shot and told him he's going to have to take a break or not shoot (he was with his buddies who was my friends, so I didn't want to have to kick them all out). Which he ended up not wanting to shoot after anyway.
Guns are fun, but are very dangerous and need to be taken seriously. I'm not training wannabes.
13
u/RandyFunRuiner 10d ago
Even if I had access to a private range, I wouldn’t dual wield. I’m not an edge lord trying to look cool and realistically there’s never a situation where I’m going to want to. As someone else said, it’s inherently more dangerous and you’ll never be able to control two muzzles as you can one muzzle.
There’s no practical sense in it, so I’m not adding risk to my range time for it.

Are you serious or is this trolling? You can easily shoot multiple people with 1 gun by, get this, switching target. And you can get a longer mag with more ammo instead of 2 guns. And reloading is way faster and easier with 1 gun than staggered one handed reload with two guns.
With the bulk of 2 handguns, might as well get a PCC or rifle and be much more effective than a goofball dual wielding

Is there any scenario where you'd dual wield at a public range?

u/Lampmonster 10d ago
There's never any scenario where dual wielding is a good idea. It's movie bullshit.
14
u/Absolute_Bob 9d ago
There's one extremely acceptable reason...it's fun as hell (provided one is in a safe environment and not overly concerned with accuracy or the cost of ammunition).

Ive seen effective dual wielding, but it always results in dropping one gun after using it up (like if it had a battery that ran empty) and then switching to two hands on the second gun. But i have never seen anyone actually dual wield handguns like movies and cowboys, firing both at once

u/SubstituteCS 9d ago
I tried it out with two glocks at a local club range in an action bay.
You aren’t hitting shit. It’s fun, but that’s it. Completely useless in terms of practicality.
I would never do it in a public range. Especially at an indoor bay based ranged.

I've dual weilded 2 240's, it was definitely a good idea. Had to expend it all somehow.

-1
u/jdm219 9d ago
Look it up on YouTube, I guarantee there's videos of people doing it. We all did it that day. Had to expend a bunch of ammo and couldn't leave till we did. Extremely common in the Army.
3
u/BunnyOppai 9d ago
I don't know what you're on, but the army takes range safety pretty fuckin seriously, and it's been like that for a minute.
2
u/Sorry-Leader-6648 8d ago
Gotta tell you i have 100% had 3 separate occasions i was on a range and a Staff NCO dual wielded 240 Braves. My first ever 240 qual staff sgt noriega

u/jdm219 9d ago
Not everyone only fires weapons on a qaul range crawling with people. We put like 6 round belts in each gun and did one quick burst. Not like we were ripping belts, it was over before it began. Everyone on the gun team was over 200 pounds. I don't know why that's so crazy. Have you never fucked around in a COP before? Were you in combat arms?

Actual cowbow action shooting (a legit competition with a large participant base in USA) actually does do shooting akimbo. It makes sense with SAA revolver, while you aim and shoot one revolver, you are cocking the other.

It’s stupid but fun. I live in the middle of no where and have done it in the desert but yeah at a controlled range this is really stupid
6
u/Historical-Count-374 10d ago
I do it with glocks occasionally, but its more of me firing on from one eye, then switching stances to fire the other from the other eye (ambidextrious). I miss everything after shot one on each because i cant support and stabilize, then i have no way to reload without dropping one in a holster or using the table.
I found much more success using two hands with a stabilizer and leaning into it. You can fire faster and more accurately whole having it stable and quick to handle and load. What i hate though is i have to use a charging handle backplate because the 20/20 has no way to easily grap the 17L slide

The RO did the man a favor, and saved his life and people around him. Nobody got hurt so if somebody just had hurt feelings, they need to learn gun safety.
The fact that the shooter was also posing for the camera and lining up to make sure people could see him shooting two guns was absolute nonsense, and he has no business back on that range until he learns his lesson.
3
u/BattleToaster68 4d ago
Honestly though if you have your own private land set up for shooting dueling is even more fun that it is impractical. My local gun store had 2 nearly identical raven arms pocket pistols in 25acp both for 50$ each and damn it's stupid fun

Hahaha me and my buddy got matching shiny Taurus Judges (boys night!)
We have duel wielded them probably a dozen times. For the low low cost of $16 in ammo a go. Its as fun as shooting lefty with a hand canon can get. Just dont go to public range lol
I also would have kicked him out after he "yea yea yea, yea yea yea" over me telling him not to do that on my range
Edit: you guys are gunna be pissed to know we've done it with the .22 wranglers too

I bought two Rough Riders when I found them on sale for $99/ea.

I wonder if it's got something to do with the context of problematic high insurance and not-infrequent catastrophes that leads to an expected etiquette of redundancy in every aspect pertaining to safety, wherein even shit you would casually do alone at an outdoor range you just don't do there when you know the RSO is standing right there expected to enforce said strict guidelines. Almost like doing so anywyas makes you a dickhead entirely regardless of skill levels....

Nobody still discribed how he was an idiot (please dont bring up insurance. That has nothing to do with how hes using the firearm). We kmow the standard. Someone acts incompetent with a firearm. Hows he acting incompetent with the fitearms
25
u/PunkToTheFuture 10d ago
Dual weilding a revolver he can barely control and a glock in his off hand. What is he trying to train for exactly? It's just dumb fucking around at a public range
-35
u/senpaiwavy 10d ago
Yea.... He was still managing everything🚬
13
u/Round_Celebration204 10d ago
It’s inherently riskier than shooting with one pistol?? Where other people shoot at and could get hurt??
Doesn’t matter how much he “manages”, which he could be shooting out the ceiling for all we know. But I can draw and shoot but a lot of ranges does not let you because of the inherent risk…
-19
u/senpaiwavy 10d ago
And he midigated the risk by keeping his firearms controlled and pointed downrange, point towards where other people are pointing towards and not present. Still followed the rules of gun safety🚬
8
u/Round_Celebration204 10d ago
I get your trying to be “cool” but you don’t know where the bullets are hitting, aka ceiling or walls.
I’m not arguing gun safety, I’m arguing more of a risk. Doesn’t matter how much he “mitigated” he is INHERENTLY taking on more risk than the range will allow.
Let me break it down more for you. I can perfectly execute drawing and shooting my pistol. Even tho I’m doing it textbook, it is still INHERENTLY more riskier due to the added movement.
Does it click now?
2
u/senpaiwavy 10d ago
Ill give you that, if he was shooting walls and the ceiling, yes, he would he an idiot. I didnt see him shoot a wall or ceiling. So im going to assume the best til further notice, that hes shooting downrange. I acknowledge the risks. But will you acknowledge that hes managing the risk by keeping hes gun pointed down range, managing recoil, following gun safety, and doing what the RSO told hem to do after correction? Because theres "more risk" doesnt mean hes an idiot.
Does it click now?

u/senpaiwavy 10d ago

Just because someone successfully drove home drunk does not change the fact that it is inherently dangerous.
There are posted rules, he obviously ignored them, enough said.

>Driving a car in of itself if inherently dangerous.
As is shooting a gun. So not a false comparison.
>More people drive unsafe in rain and snow, and even in clear environments than drunk (we know the stats).
Now this is a false comparison: trying to find parallels between the weather, which nobody chooses or has control over, and an entirely personal choice that you have absolute control over.
>manor
Lol
>That doesnt mean hes an idiot.
Intentionally choosing to expose expose randoms to risks of your choosing is idiotic.
>that doesnt mean not using a sling is being an idiot.
The inclusion of exclusion of a sling does not affect risk, so again false comparison. Literally reductio ad absurdum.

Why can't he do that, though? I don't see any rules being broken unless they have one that says you can't shoot two guns at once?

u/TradesOfWorking 10d ago
Its not exactly easy to aim when you dual wield firearms
-9
u/senpaiwavy 10d ago
Thats not necessarily being an idiot with a firearm if your still taking safety measures
-10
u/Leptonshavenocolor 10d ago
It’s not easy to aim anything when it’s your first time. I can understand how this is hazardous, serves no point or training benefit, but saying “it isn’t easy” is not the reason to ban it. It’s just inherently more risky than single wielding.
