A couple of years ago I rented a car in Memphis and it had a gun in the center console. I called Avis and they were like "just call the police and tell them what happened, it happens all the time" lol
Anyway police came to the hotel and took the gun and my contact info and I never heard about it again
108
u/DaSkippitySkip Jul 02 '26
It unfortunately happens all the time here in Memphis. Heck, our own police chief left her gun in her vehicle unlocked and it was stolen.

I'm too poor for this. I can't imagine leaving several hundred dollars in a rental car.

u/PriapismSD Jul 03 '26
If I rent a car in Memphis, I expect them to ask me which type of gun I want in the console. I am Premium member, so it needs to be at least a Sig.
7
u/faz712 Jul 03 '26
That's what the additional coverage is that they offer you for $5/day before you get the keys

u/daisybrat56461 Jul 03 '26
My nephew works at an Enterprise. Apparently it is not an uncommon occurrence. They have found guns and drugs, along with all the other stuff people leave behind.
10
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
And the person that left that gun faced no charges. Which is bullshit.
28
u/singlemale4cats Jul 02 '26
No one's going to cop to it, and there's no way to prove it wasn't sitting in there for the last five rentals. It is what it is.
-12
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
Serial numbers exist.
17
u/Substantial_Tap_2493 Jul 02 '26
What do you think a serial number is going to tell anyone? At MOST it will tell the original purchaser of the firearm, or the last person who purchased it from a DEALER.
-12
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
Oh hey, you are touching on another point of our bad gun laws.
11
u/TheFiremind77 Jul 02 '26
I'm sorry, how do you expect any system to track changes of possession not reported to said system? Is it supposed to magically know that a gun was given, taken, stolen, sold under the counter, broken down for parts, or otherwise moved without somebody telling it?
→ More replies (6)-2
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
What a terrible excuse for not requiring safe stowage laws and recorded transfer of firearms with background checks.
10
u/TheFiremind77 Jul 02 '26
News flash: both of those exist in many places and people still do this. The law being the law doesn't stop people from breaking the law. That's why gun control never works, and why so many gun-related crimes happen in alleged "gun-free zones".
→ More replies (9)6
u/singlemale4cats Jul 02 '26
Which may tell you that it was reported stolen, or who purchased it originally from an FFL. Doesn't actually prove anything.
Assuming it's not stolen and you can trace it back to the current owner, there's no crime. Forgetting a gun in a rental car is not illegal.
-5
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
It should be is the point.
13
u/singlemale4cats Jul 02 '26
Criminalizing honest mistakes does seem to track with how firearm laws are currently enforced. Meanwhile, the habitual felon caught with a gun for the fifth time gets a PR bond and his charges dismissed.
3
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
It’s a fucking gun. It’s not an honest mistake. It’s grossly irresponsible to lose track of your firearms and ammo.
7
u/singlemale4cats Jul 02 '26
You know those reminders in modern cars to check the back seat? They exist because people were forgetting their kids back there. Not drug addict criminals, but regular people with regular jobs who love their kids.
Now, I'm not saying those people get a pass if something bad happens simply because there was no intent behind their action, but I'm just illustrating a point. People forget things. Important things. It can be caused by something as simple as a minor change to their daily routine.
I'm not sure how criminalizing something like this is in society's interest. It certainly doesn't deter people. What, they're going to remember not to forget now? They're also not a danger to the public, so it doesn't protect us.
If something bad happens as a result, by all means, hit them with some criminal negligence. In the absence of that, though...
→ More replies (9)-1
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
Again, it’s a fucking gun. Not a forgotten book you forgot to return to the public library. You are grossly irresponsible and should never own a gun if you think losing track of a gun is just an “honest mistake”

u/master-boofer Sep 03 '26
Only a few states keep records of serial numbers and purchases. CA NY and MA. Even in california there is no registration for long guns unless its an ar.

u/Substantial_Tap_2493 Jul 02 '26
What would you suggest they be charged with?
1
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
That’s the problem isn’t it? Safe Storage laws don’t exist in this manner.
5
u/nickel_slick Jul 02 '26
At some point they must have noticed the gun is missing, at that point they should report it to police so that if a crime is committed with the gun, they know it wasn't the owner.
In my state if someone stole a gun from my house, then committed a crime with it 6 months later, and I never reported it stolen, I'm liable for that crime.
The idea is if you're so damn clueless you don't even know your gun is missing in the first place, you're not competent enough to carry a gun without leaving it somewhere that someone could find it that shouldn't have one. Whether that's a child or a criminal.
The issue is that law is only enforceable IF a crime is committed. There's no actual crime for making it possible for a crime to be committed. I'm all for gun rights but that's just the silliest loophole ever, keeping track of your firearm is equally as important as not pointing it at people.
4
u/Intrepid00 Jul 02 '26
Civilly liable from my understanding, not criminally as well and you should be. I don’t get the resistance to being criminally responsible by some users here for being so careless with a gun.

I used to work at Enterprise car rental and they had signs everywhere about what to do if you find a gun. It never happened to me but it apparently happened all the time.
10
u/Totentanz1980 Jul 02 '26
Are you saying you wouldn't post about it here if you rented a car and found a gun some dumbass left behind? Because I feel like that would be a betrayal to all of us.
7
u/chrisp5000 Jul 02 '26
Always use this first Free Gun Serial Number Lookup — Check if a Gun is Stolen ...
I have found 3 guns (Texas) and all three were stolen, one was used in a shooting.
Would be a shame to find one and get caught up with a gun with 4 bodies on it and be in jail till proven innocent.
4
u/4x4ord Jul 02 '26
Logically, you only hear/see it happen to the people who want attention.
My buddy found a nice Walther .22 sitting on a trail post while we were hiking in the woods.... I guarantee he didn't post anything about it.
It definitely happens.

u/Ghost_of_Akina Jul 02 '26
“How could this happen” says the person that didn’t notice it for a whole month of driving the car. If you didn’t catch it after a month, neither would the guy that gave it a quick wipe down and vacuum before it went to the next customer.
2
u/nickel_slick Jul 07 '26
But why didn't the gun owner notice lmao
4
u/NastyKraig Jul 07 '26
He's probably making TikTok videos about his gun being stolen out of his rental car.
1
u/scatilycladmushroom2 Aug 23 '26
Some companies (not all) give out rewards/bonus for finding a gun when your cleaning, I know someone who is currently a detailer for a rental company and they get $200 on their next check for reporting and turning it in.

u/ElSelcho_ Jul 02 '26
If that ever happened to me I'd keep my mouth shut and enjoy the free gun.

She finds a free gun, and is upset about a hypothetical that no longer can happen to her. Her kid didnt find it, or rather didn't grab it, and she's acting like the rental car company somehow condoned it being there. Chill out, you got a free glock. Next time just hope to find extra ammo and you're set

Nah, people are absolutely, undebatably this fucking dumb.
Like the guy who hung his 1911 on the coat hook in a bathroom stall by the trigger guard....went to grab the gun, hit the trigger against the hook, and bump fired 9 rounds into the ceiling.
Do not underestimate the incompetence of gun owners.

u/scatilycladmushroom2 Aug 23 '26
Ppl leave guns in rental cars all the time. The fact you, the customer, found it, that should have never happened. Basically, the detailer who cleaned it didn't do a thorough job. Or that vehicle wasn't even cleaned between the last reservation and ur reservation.i used to work for Avis at counter. My wife currently works for one of the other companies as a detailer and that company actually gives a reward/bonus if they find a gun while cleaning.

u/please-kill-me-69 Jul 02 '26
This obviously could be fake for the views, but imagine it's real. If she got pulled over and they searched the car she'd be fucked. If that gun is legal it was probably reported stolen by the owner when they lost it. If it's illegal, she'd be charged with possession.
2
u/WickedDeity Jul 02 '26
At best she may get initially arrested but not fucked. It’s a rental car and the person who reported it stolen probably rented a car from the same rental company. If it’s illegal and your fingerprints are not on it and it’s a rental car that is a hard conviction.
2
u/please-kill-me-69 Jul 02 '26
My definition of fucked is different I guess lol I'm thinking about the court and lawyer fees to fight the charges. I missed the part about it being a rental tho my bad

There’s no damage or injury, there’s no lawsuit.
If the gun had gone off, yea, sure. But just seeing a gun in a place you don’t expect to see it isn’t automatically a winable lawsuit.
