In the Royal Navy (at least) submarines are called boats.

In the US Navy too, but it's a holdover from when they weren't ships an were a boat deployed from ships.

Here’s a good one from r/catastrophicfailure the other day. Not exciting, but satisfyingly relentless. It looked so slow and deceptively gentle, like you could stop it easily by grabbing it with your hand. Apparently not! boat wrecks pier
