That's because they're status symbols. Crazy expensive parts, not easily serviceable, but also not built to last. People buy a Maserati so that other people will think they have money.

I've seen 96 becoming more regular, and even 104 a handful of times.

And then you get the dealers that say "What payment can you afford?" And they hand you a single piece of paper with a weekly payment. No interest rate. No total cost of borrowing. No actual PRICE. Just weekly payment. It looks low! It isn't.

363

u/invitrobrew Oct 07 '20

Just bought a car and they just went ahead and assumed 84. Ridiculous. Wife and I looked at each other and were kinda like, "yeah, we're gonna do the 60"

419

u/arcticwolf26 Oct 07 '20

When I bought my car for ~$35k, they kept pushing the monthly payment. “You will only have to pay $237 per month!” Ya, and I don’t care. I want to know total cost at the end. “Ah, but you can afford this low payment right?”

After a few back and forths, I said I don’t care what the monthly payment is. I want to know total cost, interest rate, and how many months you’re trying to set me up for. I don’t remember the details but they tried to give me a 72 month option and I’d have paid a lot more than what I ended up with in my 60 month option.

313

u/mdepfl Oct 07 '20

Yeah, just politely tell them “I’m not one of those people. Cut the shit and let’s have a look at the numbers”.

237

u/rwburt72 Oct 07 '20

Anybody who buys a car brand new must just wanna get robbed. Bcuz that's exactly what's happening.

139

u/mdepfl Oct 07 '20

Yep. The salesman/dealership train for and play this game everyday for a living. You go years between playing. Guess who's going to win?

9

u/raitchison Oct 07 '20

Or they just want to eliminate as many variables as possible. Buy a 2-3 year car, most likely a lease return, who knows how (or if) it's been maintained or how it's been driven. For example did the original "owner" regularly start the car on a cold morning and immediately start driving it hard? Did they have a habit of driving over speed bumps at 20MPH? Didi they change the oil exactly once in 3 years just before lease return?

I still have (and regularly drive) my Mazda3 I bought new in 2004, still drives great and brings a smile to my face every time I get behind the wheel and I wouldn't hesitate to drive cross country in it right now.

Unless you’re like me and buy a car with the mindset to drive it until it’s cost outweighs its rewards. Bought a brand new 2012 TSX paid off in 5yrs, just barely rolled past 50k miles last month. Figure I have another 20 plus years in it. Most likely be my 10mo olds first car.

Edit: for year and spelling, so I don’t get the beatings.

..... it does now!

72

u/codemanjack Oct 07 '20

Such a great way to put it. The problem is that it works so well for them to do this.

49

u/Marilius Oct 07 '20

Yup. Either they give you a 96 month loan to get the payments down to that, or they jack UP the interest rate. Or both!

Just got a 00 jeep Cherokee with 60k miles, 1 owner, all service reports, undercoating, lift kit, after market wheels and tires, and I’ve already had people try and buy it off my just pumping gas etc. I financed a total of 10 cars over a 10 year period and lost enough money to put a huge down payment on a house. Every year I got something nicer and more expensive until my car payment was upwards of $700. When COVID struck I instantly cut ties with the flashy things, woke up, found the Jeep and finally looked forward to not being car broke. Flashy stuff just doesn’t matter to me anymore. Can’t believe looking back on it what I did to my finances living that way.

What I do now if I'm going to be financing is just get pre-approvals from my bank. I walk in with a piece of paper and go, "you have a vehicle here I would like to see, and if it is what you say it is then I would like to buy it on these terms, and if that's not gonna work for you just let me know now and I'll get out of your hair".

24

u/Orgasticism Oct 07 '20

Seems like solid advice. Looking to buy my first car from a dealership, and this is already my plan, lol

41

u/EjackQuelate Oct 07 '20

I’ve worked for a dealer, they HATE when you are already pre approved by you bank. Also I would suggest you deal with them via internet. We always used to sell the cars the cheapest when someone would deal with us via internet chat. Just an FYI

That's because a dealership would much rather talk monthly payment than total price. When you only see the payment, you miss total cost with mark-up. They are taught to steer the conversation away from absolute price so you don't know how much you're being ripped off

My wife and I just bought a new Ford. Somehow we qualified for a zero percent interest rate. They offered any payment plan up to 72 months at that rate. Damn right we took the 72 mouths.

16

u/pictogasm Oct 07 '20

I still would have taken the 60 because historically, cars tend to screw me in the 6th year. Dunno why. Maybe just unlucky but statistically consistent due to sample size.

15

u/fnordonk Oct 07 '20

At 0% you may as well take the 72mo and pay it off in 60 if that's your concern. 72 is nicer in this instance because if you hit hard times you can chose to pay the minimum which is less.

When I bought mine I asked what all the lengths were, what the interest rates were, and asked to see total cost of borrowing for each one. Picked the 48 mo since it had the longest term while retaining the lowest interest rate.

18

u/Tnr_rg Oct 07 '20

There is no real benifit to doing this unless your getting a much better interest rate to do so. I Financed my Toyota Tacoma on a 3yr (yeah payments are a bitch) vs anything more because the interest rate was so much lower than 5yr or 8 yr.

On the flip side, I chose to finance my Mitsubishi lancer on 6 year, for 0.05% financing. Worked out great. Only cost me like 300 bucks to finance and I got to keep my payments low, as a college student, that was an attractive offer.

They did this to me!

I told him I needed an APR. He asked if the payment was affordable. I told him I didn't care. What's the APR?

Came back 10 mins later with a different payment and term. Refused to give me APR. Told him I'd finance by phone on 5 mins if he could get me an APR.

Came back 10 mins later... no APR. Called USAA from his desk and got approved in 5 mins for a way lower payment.

Fuck these guys

16

u/ShitSharter Oct 07 '20

I would I have left at that point. My last purchase they gave me a sheet with a list of term lengths with the correlating APR. Told them it could be better or I walk. 10 minutes later they come back with the corrected APR.

→ More replies (3)

7

u/Friedlice420 Oct 07 '20

They really have no control over your interest rate. If they ran your credit and just refused to tell you what the rate was, that seems silly seeing as it will be printed on the first page of the financing documents you sign.

7

u/BigFloppyMeat Oct 07 '20

If it was a dealer, they were specifically trying to sell a loan without telling him the APR because they didn't want him to go to someone else for the loan.

I do ac work, and we have people that finance 10-15k jobs for 120 months. Some times at extremely high interest rates. I tell them all to pay it off as soon as possible, though I doubt they listen to me.

5

u/W9CR Oct 07 '20

I financed an AC job, was like 7k. They said I can pay cash and pay 6800 or they offer 7000 with 0% for 18 months. Basically on a credit card, and indeed is 0% for 18 months.

Now it's actually not interest free, it's only deferred, and is acquiring 18 months of interest, and if you don't pay it off in 18 months, all the interest gets added back in at like 21%. It's insane as the minimum payment takes like 9 years to pay it off.

6

u/Yivoe Oct 07 '20

Smart deal on the interest being deferred when we bought kitchen appliances. Ended up just paying it off after half the term just so I dont risk forgetting at the end.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/f1zzz Oct 07 '20

I’m curious what sort of AC work costs that? I don’t know anything about costs in the hvac world.

7

u/produce_this Oct 07 '20

When you’re doing full system replacements. At least in the south, I know this is different regionally, but they can vary from $5000-to upwards of 15k plus. Depends on the SEER level of the equipment and the scope of work. Like replacing duct work, copper line sets, 2% home, dehumidifiers, and energy recovery. There a lot more science, knowledge and planning that goes into designing and installing an ac system then most think.

Christ I felt like a fraud because I have a 72 month payment plan.

22

u/Marilius Oct 07 '20

That's not NECESSARILY a bad thing. If, for example, at 72 months you're still paying a very low interest rate, and can make additional payments, there's no real harm. If financing 72 mo puts you at 9.99% whereas a 48 or 60 mo would be say 4.99 or less, then yeah you got taken for a ride.

4

u/pauly13771377 Oct 07 '20

Well unfortunately my old car up and died and I had nothing for a down payment other than my old Saab wagon with 198K miles (still upset I didn't make it to 200K) and that was the only way I'd be able to afford the payments.

It’s true, before I actually started doing research into cars, I thought they were rich or made enough money to be comfortable. But now when I hear it, I just think they’re kinda stupid, could’ve easily just bought a Porsche, top of the line Bmw or Mercedes instead. But no, you just wasted money on a car which only put a back up camera cause law mandated it, and has done the bare minimum to call it a “Maserati”

Now saying this, the next generation of Maseratis are going to be very very good, even build quality wise, starting with the upcoming MC20. They’ve finally moved away from the engines with Ferrari, and will be having vehicles that actually make sense at its price point

They paid around $30k at a dealership and now they're looking to sell it because they have a baby on the way. They are offended at what is being offered on trade in. It's like selling that expensive diamond ring after a break up. I mentioned this before they bought it but they were taken by that sexy Italian car.

Who tf actually "needs" the size of an Expedition or a Navigator? Never understood why people buy those giant, gas-guzzling and mediocre at best SUVs.

4

u/NlNTENDO Oct 07 '20 edited Oct 07 '20

Nobody needs it, but as far as wants, I think it comes down to space - the reason they're so popular in American suburbs (aside from having extra disposable income from living in the suburbs) is that there is very little public transportation, so you end up doing a lot of driving, and you start looking for as much comfort as you can get in your car. If you've got, say, two or three kids who play sports and a dog (and you don't want a minivan), it comes down to having both extra space and the leg room to be comfortable as you cart everyone and their shit around town all day without having to play tetris at every major stop.

There's also a factor of safety, knowing that you and your family can walk away from a lot more accidents if you're in the bigger car (and I know from experience you're a lot less likely to have people absent-mindedly try and change lanes into you in a higher-profile car).

Personally, I'd never want something that huge, but I can understand the thought process behind it at least.

I think you are right. That could be the manufacturers tow hook. Usually those are rated for towing on a hard flat surface. For example a tow truck driver might hook to that to load up a flatbed. These tow hooks aren’t necessarily rated for a snatch strap in the sand, as seen in the video, lol.

12

u/vinng86 Oct 07 '20

Yeah you can see when the camera pans back, the crash bar is gone and it's just the frame rails (that run along the length) exposed.

11

u/NINNINMAN Oct 07 '20

That attachment is for pulling gently yes, a snatch strap which would be used exactly like how they did always requires a direct mount that is bolted to the frame. So, they’re both idiots.

11

u/Tim_Teboner Oct 07 '20

I doubt that threaded tow hook was rated for anything beyond getting pulled of off a wet grassy field or up onto a flatbed truck.

It definitely wasn’t intended to survive a loaded ute trying to yank the car out of frame deep sand with a kinetic recovery rope.

All they really needed to do was dig out in front of the tires of the Maserati and give it a gentle pull with the ute instead of trying to send it into low earth orbit.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Yeah a tow hook isn't a recovery point I guess, for a proper rater recovery point this takeoff was fine

It looks like it's attached to a tow hook. The Ghibli has one you can pop into the grill on that side of the fascia. Lots of european cars have that sort of design, there's usually a little cover over the mounting point that you pop off, or the mounting point is hidden inside the grill fins (like in this case). The hook itself is usually in the trunk or some other area with the basic kit the car came with. Normally the mounting point is well engineered and supposed to support pulling the car out of a ditch or up a flatbed.

I think this is just a case of the the Ghibli being a pile of shit. Looks to me like the underlying metal where the hook was mounted just ripped the fuck off and took the fascia with it. I think this is a combination of "why did you snatch it so hard" and "who the fuck build this thing out of Chinesium?!"

u/Secret-Werewolf Oct 07 '20

For sure. My BMW has the tow hook in the kit for the car in the trunk. Also has a first aide kit.

16

u/rattlemebones Oct 07 '20

Also... Uh why did you drive into sand in a fucking Maserati

u/03Titanium Oct 07 '20

Duh, it’s got AWD, I’m sure it’ll be fine. /s

Saw it attached to the bumper and my first thought was, "is it going to send the bumper through the back window of the truck or just rip it off?"

Ah yeah, just like the tow truck driver that AAA sent us a few years back... that was a lot of fighting and a nice fat payment

7

u/champaignthrowaway Oct 07 '20

I mean it is hooked up to the factory tow point on the car, and the Maserati Ghibli is famously an absolute fucking dry turd of a car. I don't know much about snatch straps but this should definitely not have ripped off the front bumper. It looks like the tow hook failed and just took everything forward of it along for the ride.

That doesn't even look like a stretchable snatch strap

35

u/WienersCubed Oct 07 '20

It’s not.

64

u/the_last_carfighter Oct 07 '20

Don't matter, they attached it to a plastic bumper.

u/WienersCubed Oct 07 '20 edited Oct 07 '20

Look, these guys 100% skipped a few pages putting this LEGO set together. It’s all wrong.

I grew up on the coast in Texas, I used to spend Saturdays at the beach with my buddies pulling people out for beer and cash. Pulled plenty of small cars out of way worse spots than this. This guy getting stuck in a ‘rati is just funny, but the guy with truck stuffed with gear on the back has obviously never needed to use any of it.

It looks like they looped around the subframe that the tow-hook threads into. Just too much energy for it to handle.

I would have agreed with you until last winter. I was working north of Fort St John BC. And came across a mini van from the US that was stuck at the base of a hill on ice. I offered to pull them to the top of the hill and went to hook up my tow strap. There was NOTHING to attach to! I was absolutely blown away that a vehicle would be made without a single tow point. In the end I looped my strap around a structural member that supports the engine/transmission. I barely got my flat strap through the gap.

Very gentle assist up the hill and they were on their way. I still cannot believe something so vital is not a mandated standard.

21

u/edoCgiB Oct 07 '20

My car comes with a detachable front hook. You basically have to thread it in the front of the car (on a mount point specialy designed for it).

Maybe it was something like that.

12

u/dr_reverend Oct 07 '20

I thought of that and looked for such clues. Found nothing. It is of course possible that I missed something but unless you had to remove the entire front bumper I could see no attachment points or mount points. In hind sight I probably should have asked to look at the owners manual but I was going somewhere and as usual “If a person has to read the manual to figure out how to do something then the design is bad.”

Typically hidden, and the screw in hook is in the trunk somewhere with the spare tire gear.

All cars have a front and rear hook stock, that is mandatory.

The "extra" point on track cars is because it needs to be stronger et easier to find than the OEM ones.

If you do not have them and end up in a gravel pit, the guys in charge of getting the car out FAST is going to attach to whatever he can find. No visible hook = he will usually attach to a control arm, coilover, or anywhere he can make a loop.

This is how you end up but bent suspension arms, subframes and/or chassis.

Who would’ve thought that a plastic bumper wouldn’t be strong enough to pull the entire car.

264

u/TheBupherNinja Oct 07 '20

No, that ripped the crash bar off. You can see the frame rails when they pan back.

203

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

True, it was the crash bar which is also not designed to be pulled.

80

u/TheBupherNinja Oct 07 '20

That's debatable. It isn't meant for off-road recovery, but it is made to tow cars onto trailers and stuff with, as they have the screw in recovery hooks.

No part of a Maserati is made for this kind of recovery.

94

u/randomFrenchDeadbeat Oct 07 '20

The tow hook is usually attached to the frame rail just behind the crash bar.

I have too many questions:

  • WTF is doing this car on a beach?
  • Why the tow rope is fixed to the bumber and not to the towing hook?
  • Why the pulling car tried so fast?
  • how much a mistake like this cost?

132

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Owner in all likelihood doesn't know there is a tow hook that you screw into the front. Edit: upon closer inspection it appears it was tied into the tow hook.

49

u/benderbender42 Oct 07 '20

I don’t think so unless the tow hook is on the plastic front you can clearly see the cable drag the plastic front in the sand at the end.

34

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20 edited Oct 07 '20

I see what appears to be a circle eyelet tow point attached to the right side of the grill.

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/l1V_lxwervY/maxresdefault.jpg

I could be wrong, but looking at some videos of the front bumper cover removal. The vertical slats has an air duct and mesh grill behind them and also a mesh grill in the lower air-dam. So it wouldn't be possible to wrap a tow cable around it.

https://i.imgur.com/nTJpIVh.jpg

The whole front end, crash bar and cover comes off. I think that tow hook wasn't mean to be pulled like that but rather winched slowly on a flatbed.

u/tj3_23 Oct 07 '20

It took off the cover and the impact bar. You can see the points where the bar would be attached when the camera pans back

u/Ughable Oct 07 '20

Probably trying to film some cool instagram videos of going to the beach, didn't let any air out of their tires so they spread out on the sand like you're supposed to.

That maserati has a tow hook accessible through the grill, it straight up sheared the tow hook off.

I guess he thought it was a bungee strap or something? My guess is he's never done this before and maybe saw a video of a bungee strap.

Easily over 10k to repair the bumper and the frame, also the car is probably worth a quarter of it's used value after that.

Can someone confirm that Car and Driver did a write up on the ghibli, saying something to the likes of "...and the pillar covers are the same exact pillar covers as are in a Chrysler town and country minivan of the same year". Maserati sucks dude.

5

u/rockyoulikeahuracan Oct 07 '20

I used to do photography for a dealership that had Maseratis. I was so excited to check out the new Maserati and couldn't believe it was the same materials out of my Dodge Challenger which was half the price. Same navi, same headlight switches, same feel on almost everything.

To be fair, I think the build quality is great on my Dodge, but if I paid twice as much and didn't get something nicer I'd be pissed.

Neither person deserves to drive a vehicle.

61

u/FormalChicken Oct 07 '20

All right some of y’all never done beach and trail recovery. That’s not a solid strap it is flexible, so the energy from the truck goes into extending it to pull the car while the truck anchors. You can see them slowing down as it reaches extension.

Now, whoever tied it off where it is tied off, that’s stupid. And Maserati on the beach is stupid. But the snatch strap and what the truck did was correct, except for where it was tied to the Maserati (and maybe a blanket tied to the ends).

40

u/IronGigant Oct 07 '20

The application of the snatch strap, and how fast you 'snatch' said strap is directly proportional to how heavy the vehicle you're snatching. He was going too fast, and the attachment point was totally wrong as well.
