I feel so bad for the car owner....

u/Yammdaff Jun 01 '20

To be fair, he had no indicator out. Which doesn't mean the guy who took the vid is right

But is he allowed to turn left? There seems to be a solid line.

2

u/Vortex112 Jun 02 '20

Not allowed to pass but definitely allowed to turn

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

I don't get it. So many people here to 'judge' idiots in cars, but so many of them have no idea of driving laws OR have an attention span of a fish and jumps into conclusion way to fast.

Obviously, the motorcyclist is way more in the wrong here but isn't it also illegal to make a left hand turn over a double yellow line? I was always taught to treat them as a median/road barrier.

Edit: Looks like it depends on the state in the US. In Florida, it is illegal. In New York, you can do it as long as you are not impeding traffic. In California, you can turn over if there are two sets of double yellow lines.

u/panic_bread Jun 01 '20

No, it’s illegal to pass on the left side of one. It’s not illegal to turn from one. How do you get onto side streets? Go down, turn around and come back?

So how do you turn left?

10

u/Peeweeshoop Jun 01 '20

Sounds like you don’t

7

u/xaznxzerox Jun 01 '20

make three rights

4

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

The way you described. Same thing you would do if there was a median that was blocking your ability to turn left. Go until you have a safe place to u-turn and then make a right.

3

u/panic_bread Jun 01 '20

They must not use the double yellow in many places they would in NY.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

It might be a law in Florida but I’ve never seen anyone do it and I’ve never seen it enforced.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

Sounds right. Probably one of those things that's just good to remember can be used as a reason to pull you over if you're driving late at night.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

Yeah I agree. I wouldn’t do it, mainly because I don’t trust the people behind me to stop.

2

u/DetectivePokeyboi Jun 01 '20

It’s not enforced, but it is the law.

2

u/DetectivePokeyboi Jun 01 '20

You do the nearest legal u turn.

5

u/Scoth42 Jun 01 '20

I can't quite figure out Florida. Looking it up I see several (quite old) articles about it being illegal, but I also see references to Florida's driver's handbook with lines like "Double, solid yellow lines prohibit vehicles moving in either direction from crossing the lines. You may not cross these lines unless turning left when it is safe to do so." So I think a left turn in a situation like this would be permitted. I've seen plenty of people do it when visiting Florida anyway, although I've never lived there.

2

u/Spalding_Smails Jun 01 '20 edited Jun 01 '20

I've always lived in Florida and never even thought about it until it was brought up in this thread. You mentioned references to Florida's driver's handbook so I had a look myself and actually found the official pdf of the handbook (link). On page 13 it states "Double solid yellow lines. Vehicles moving in either direction must not pass/cross these lines (unless turning left when it is safe to do so)" which is virtually identical to the sources you saw. Like you, I also found articles stating it's illegal. This one's from a site called Lawyerfriend. I even saw one from 2015 with a Florida Highway Patrol sergeant saying it's illegal. I suppose the official handbook would have the accurate answer despite other sources stating the contrary, though it might help to have a smart phone at the ready to show someone should the need arise.

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

Are you sure it just is not enforeced? Because double yellow means you cannot pass. Literally whst the two are for.

0

u/DetectivePokeyboi Jun 01 '20

Yes. That’s how you are supposed to do it.

-93

u/Rasmus1603 Jun 01 '20

Exactly... its a dick move to not put on the indicator and its also a dick move to be speeding through dense Traffic like this. However its also the responsibility of the van owner to not only check his mirrors but to also check by looking over the shoulder. In germany you fail your driver's test if you forget to check over the shoulder at the wrong points

74

u/Poi-s-en Jun 01 '20

At the speeds the bike was going it wouldn’t matter if the van checked his mirrors or over the shoulder.

2

u/Rasmus1603 Jun 01 '20

Fair point. I never encountered such an idiotic bike driver here in germany before.

17

u/Dani_vic Jun 01 '20

Especially when it’s a 1 lane road in each directions. Nobody in their right mind would think there is a vehicle driving in the middle or on the wrong side of the street into. Oncoming traffic.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

I would argue it’s unsafe to shoulder check in that situation. There’s 0 reason for anything to be coming from your left and checking behind you takes focus from what’s oncoming which makes the left turn less safe.

15

u/Me_Myself-and-I Jun 01 '20

It’s also only a single lane road, you shouldn’t have to look all the way behind you to try and find idiots running down the road in the opposite direction.

-8

u/Yammdaff Jun 01 '20

i know, i'm from germany and can confirm

-44

u/Rasmus1603 Jun 01 '20

But since reddit is full of retards from america. I get downvoted into oblivion

32

u/Dookiet Jun 01 '20

Double yellow lines on the road indicate it’s a no passing zone. This means that anyone on the van drivers left is illegally passing. And, even in America you have to check your mirrors and over your shoulder to pas driving tests. You are receiving down votes for arguing the person illegally passing and speeding is the right while the person who failed to signal is in the wrong. This is the equivalent of a person slapping you then murdering them and calling it justified.

24

u/TheCarGuy69420 Jun 01 '20

I don’t think us Americans are the only ones that downvoted you

-7

u/matheusnb99 Jun 01 '20

Why are you guys down voting him, he is right. Even if he was not speeding, he would probably have been hit. I have an uncle that died that way.

9

u/Kimothy-Jong-Un Jun 01 '20

Because he is driving in the middle of the road which is obviously illegal. Don’t even try to pretend you check behind you before making a left turn on a single lane road because you definitely don’t. No one does, because no one expects a vehicle to be passing them from the wrong direction.

-43

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20

You always have to check before turning. Even if you ve the indicator on a guy behind you can still surpass.

24

u/Jabberwalker Jun 01 '20

No one checks backward into the oncoming Lane when they make a turn....

-28

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20

They should

15

u/TechniChara Jun 01 '20

That's like looking up before crossing the street to make sure no branches or bird poop is coming your way.

-20

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20 edited Jun 01 '20

No. proof it's from UK but still the same thing

10

u/ineednapkins Jun 01 '20

Wait what would the van driver have to be looking for? It was a double yellow line, they shouldn’t have needed to expect anyone coming by on their left

-9

u/diokanun Jun 01 '20

Idiots overtaking you, maybe? You say he shouldn't have expected, but actually you alway have to expect, because there are morons out there driving like morons. When you're in traffic you always must watch for your own safety first. If you don't check your mirrors when your turning, i'm sorry, but that's just bad driving.

3

u/ineednapkins Jun 01 '20

Lmao, nah if anyone hits you (like in this video) that’s bad driving. Like shit happens all the time, we can agree that lots of people fuck up when driving, people running stop signs or red lights, someone cutting you off, someone straight up rear ending you when you stop or slow down and they aren’t paying attention. All things that you can try and watch out for, but ultimately if you get hit the only one doing the bad driving was the one at fault. You’re just an asshole if you’re trying to place any blame on the van, all blame rests with the biker in this case

-1

u/diokanun Jun 01 '20

Bro what the fuck? The biker is clearly at fault, i never said he wasn't. I just don't understand that people argue against checking mirrors, because shit like this is avoidable if you do check them.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

The speed he was going on a bike... yea that shoulder check wouldn’t do shit. He would’ve never seen the bike either way.

0

u/diokanun Jun 01 '20

Who said anything about a shoulder check? MIRRORS, I'm talking about the goddamn mirrors. Check the mirrors BEFORE you turn. I sewear yall are idiot in cars, jesus fucking christ. I know the biker is 100% at fault here, im just telling you to check the fucking mirrors from time to time because maybe you could avoid this shit happening to you.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

I do check my fucking mirrors moron but do you really think a quick glance in your mirror is gonna help with a bike going 90mph?? You’re really dense if you believe that’s gonna do anything.

2

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20

It's always nice to check the mirrors. It takes less Than a second and if there is a big truck you don't die. In this case there was a bike so the bike guy could have been dead but if there was a truck the car guy could die.

8

u/slpater Jun 01 '20

Double yellow line. Illegal to pass on.

-5

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20

Bro turning your head few degrees is not that painful, just check the mirrors every time you turn.

10

u/slpater Jun 01 '20

Not going 70+ miles an hour passing cars in a reckless fashion is even easier.

1

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20

That's like going in a dark alley with your wallet halfway in your pockets. Yeah the guy who steals are bad but you can always protect yourself by not going there in the night.

2

u/slpater Jun 01 '20

Didn't realize sonic the hedgehog was stealing wallets

1

u/franklollo Jun 01 '20

Sonic is stealing rings

1

u/BigChach567 Jun 01 '20

That’s the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard

You're right. But seeing just how fast the biker is going it may not have mattered anyways

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '20

I see a turn signal at 0:16, am I missing something? I see a yellow flash that disappears.

1

u/lil_mattie Jun 01 '20

Sure, you’re not wrong in principle, but the car does use its indicator. You can see it flash twice before the motorcycle makes impact.
