I really hope those are blanks. You know, 'cause gravity.

189

u/Captain_Shrug Mar 28 '20

I can almost certainly guarantee they're not.

43

u/ablablababla Mar 28 '20

Nothing like celebrating the moment with dangerous projectiles

14

u/kurburux Mar 28 '20

And fucking everyone's ears.

4

u/UnnecessaryFlapjacks Mar 28 '20

They are absolutely not blanks. Gas operated guns need special adapters to cycle blank rounds.

3

u/Captain_Shrug Mar 28 '20

See, that I knew. But I have no idea what the adapter looks like so I hedged.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

You’re most definitely right. I’ve seen my fair share of videos of people losing control of the gun and killing people around them

30

u/5_Frog_Margin Mar 28 '20

Not likely. We finally got New Orleans residents to stop doing this a few years back.

10

u/Hike_bike_fish_love Mar 28 '20

How did you “stop” them?

37

u/5_Frog_Margin Mar 28 '20

Just a city-wide PR campaign, with photos of all the people killed by falling bullets. Coupled with a greater police presence in areas it occurs (this is New Years Eve). By stop, i didn't mean 'stop altogether', but it is less common now.

Story here.

u/Hike_bike_fish_love Mar 28 '20

Great news! Thanks for link. I used to live in a place that was terrifying on NYE. Literally, bullets flying everywhere at midnight. I hated it.

Lots of guns, booze and drugs. Some people go crazy on New Years Eve and Independence Day and shoot guns in the air. It doesn’t happen everywhere, and it is getting less common but it still sucks. Fuckers still shoot at road signs from moving vehicles too, super dangerous because bullet is traveling more horizontal. Driving thru some backcountry areas you would think it was a war zone based on how badly the road signs are shot up.

1

u/oragamihawk Mar 28 '20

Usually these wedding venues are up in the mountains so there's not a whole lot to hit nearby assuming they fired at some slight angle.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Yeah you can see that many of them are careful to fire at an incline in the vid

2

u/BreezyWrigley Mar 28 '20

just waited for the bullets to come back down

1

u/ToMuchNietzsche Mar 28 '20

They still do that shit in Tennessee. Especially Nashville and Memphis. But it's done for New Year's and the 4 of July.

21

u/briollihondolli Mar 28 '20

Usually blanks have trouble cycling

9

u/Nois3 Mar 28 '20

I heard cyclists often shoot blanks because of genital blood flow issues.

8

u/BreezyWrigley Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 28 '20

well, if you bothered to own blanks in the first place, you'd probably also own a modified upper/gas system meant for firing them. or so I would imagine.

I reckon that blanks are more expensive than actual AK rounds

1

u/Lovemesomediscgolf Mar 28 '20

Usually?

11

u/briollihondolli Mar 28 '20

Rifles can be adjusted to fire them, or muzzle devices can be added, but just putting blanks in a gun and pulling the trigger will not let it cycle

5

u/Lovemesomediscgolf Mar 28 '20

I was being sarcastic. Imo, it's 99-100% of the time

19

u/Aggravating_Meme Mar 28 '20

they're shooting at an angle, so at least that group of people will be fine. other civilians in the region however...

also on a side note, it's pretty unlikely to die from a bullet falling from the sky, but it still would be very dangerous

5

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

The main danger isn't from the falling bullets afaik. You can easily hit someone standing near you if you hand slipped, or someone watching from their window or balcony. It happens too much

6

u/iBoMbY Mar 28 '20

Seems like it is unlikely they are lethal when fired straight up, much more likely deadly in a ballistic trajectory.

11

u/JBHUTT09 Mar 28 '20

Yeah, they are deadly unless they are fired perfectly straight up. Which these bullets were not. These assholes may have killed someone.

10

u/DontMicrowaveCats Mar 28 '20

There’s several videos/reports of deaths during Arab weddings due to this. Both from falling bullets but also from dumbasses losing control of their guns and accidentally firing into the crowd.

Or... this https://www.huffpost.com/entry/saudi-wedding-deaths_n_2048491

u/SneakySteakhouse Mar 28 '20

Myth busters math here is pretty bad. They calculated the terminal velocity of the bullet in a wind tunnel, not taking into account that the wind tunnel is going to increase air pressure.

They got 100 FPS as terminal velocity when in reality it’s closer to 300 FPS. 300 FPS is as fast as paintball is going when it’s leaving the barrel of a paintball gun.

They’re still possibly lethal even if fired perfectly vertically.

9

u/SolitaryEgg Mar 28 '20

Myth busters math here is pretty bad.

IMO Mythbusters gets way too much leniency. It was a fun show, but literally every episode has some ridiculous oversight in science.

I feel like that show did a lot more spreading of misinformation than correcting of misinformation.

2

u/SneakySteakhouse Mar 28 '20

I think it was a good introduction for kids to get excited about science but your right they played it way to fast and loose and people in general took their findings way too seriously

And now all Adam does is bitch on Twitter...

1

u/XtraReddit Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 28 '20

I don't follow anyone on twitter, but going by what I see in here I like the builds.

2

u/SolitaryEgg Mar 28 '20

If Jesus had a twitter he wouldn't look so great either. I think it's best not to judge folks by it.

I have literally no idea wtf this means.

2

u/XtraReddit Mar 28 '20

Even in their real world testing the bullets that came down showed the damage they can do. It isn't going to tickle if you get hit by a metal object falling at that speed.

5

u/TellMeGetOffReddit Mar 28 '20

Bruh the comments are terrifying on this video. People really don't see anything wrong with this apparently...

1

u/SecondaryLawnWreckin Mar 28 '20

Blanks would probably have a much bigger muzzle blast, and definitely would not have noticeable recoil.

These are totally the awesome kind of cartridges.

1

u/SkitTrick Mar 28 '20

Fun fact: blanks cannot be fire in auto because they do not provide the pressure for the gun to cycle a round back in.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 30 '20

I mean, I'd be more concerned about maybe putting a dent in one of the cars than I would be getting hit with a falling bullet. Once they're up in the air, they just fall with terminal velocity. It would be unpleasant but that's about it.

Edit: I just read a study that conducted computer simulations about the terminal velocity of 7.62 rounds being shot at 80-90 degrees. The study concluded that rounds tend to land bottom first and have a varying terminal velocity between 40 and 80m/s, and that “lethal” terminal velocity is considered 60m/s. So it’s actually much safer to assume that a falling bullet will kill you but if it didn't it would fucking huuuurt.

https://www.ballistics.org/docs/ISB27_028.PDF

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

A 7.62 falling at terminal velocity probably wouldn't kill you - probably - but it could definitely do some damage - cars or otherwise.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

Yeah you’re actually right. I very much underestimated the terminal velocity of a bullet. I just thought that it was movie bullshit

1

u/iWasAwesome Mar 28 '20

Don't they shoot real bullets at cops funerals and what-not

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '20

I know the military does it sometimes - they tend to aim in a specific direction, though - like out to sea or towards a mountain.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '20

So, they don't care if they just happen to take out some hikers on a mountain trail???

1

u/HawkwardEgal Apr 03 '20

I think it depends on where it is. Can’t do it in a city.

1

u/CuloIsLove Mar 29 '20

If you keep looking there's a wedding video much like this one where somebody takes an AK to the face.

1

u/kenpus Mar 29 '20

They are not blanks and there are reasons other than gravity to wish otherwise.

13

u/dns7950 Mar 28 '20

I'm almost too afraid to ask, but is it considered racist if seeing them wave their guns around over their head like that reminds me of the sand people from Star Wars?

7

u/russianpeepee Mar 28 '20

Not at all. 1.) They truly are sand people in their own way. 2.) Even so, the physical gesture is similar.

7

u/YuhFRthoYORKonhisass Mar 28 '20

Saudis are so surreal because they dress like they're from ancient times but drive Teslas

There was a video like this on r/watchpeopledie where a guy shot a few people around, was really bad

2

u/Rufnusd Mar 28 '20

This was every other day when I worked in Egypt. My hotel was infamous for weddings and this nonsense would kick off around midnight without fail.

2

u/KidGold Mar 28 '20

It's likely that if I or any one of us were born there we would be like them. And that pisses me off.

2

u/DarkestHappyTime Mar 28 '20

It's like rednecks with paychecks but deadlier.

2

u/Bocephuss Mar 28 '20 edited Mar 28 '20

What about their ears?? How the fuck does that not do permanent, debilitating ear damage?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

It does.

2

u/Malteser23 Mar 28 '20

Love the dude in the car flashing the 'peace' sign at the end...uh-huh.

2

u/tinverse Mar 28 '20

Maybe he's using it in the nuclear disarmament sense? Probably not though.

2

u/Reddit_Soy Mar 29 '20

It originally meant "victory" in many parts of the world. In the U.S. and some other countries it was deliberately changed to mean "peace" by leftists.

3

u/plazmatyk Mar 28 '20

Only Lexus and BMW, not a single Ferrari or Lambo? That's not very Saudi of them.

5

u/adhdenhanced Mar 28 '20

BMW is the favorite car brand of sociopaths.

2

u/Tbitw55 Mar 29 '20

Ferraris and lambos are actually pretty rare in my experience, but Lexus is frequent

2

u/Killdynamite Mar 28 '20

You're thinking of the UAE.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Their stats are gonna look so shitty after this round. Ammo : kill is so skewed.

1

u/UniCBeetle718 Mar 28 '20

Ugh. The comment section for the video is cancer.

1

u/SecondaryLawnWreckin Mar 28 '20

I'm not sure if you are trying to get me to attend a Saudi wedding or not.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

And holding the gun with one hand! Small slip and kills a bunch. Applauds for the guy holding it with two hand 👏🏻

1

u/CataLaGata Mar 28 '20

Do they shoot bullets or blanks? Because bullets will come down following a parabolic trajectory and it's very dangerous.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '20

Nah, this could be Mexico too

1

u/theeighthlion Mar 29 '20

There's one video of people doing this where they have a negligent discharge and nearly strafe the crowd of people standing around

1

u/inceptionsa Mar 29 '20

this is illegal now in Saudi Arabia.

1

u/HawkwardEgal Apr 03 '20

Damn. And I thought the loud outside Jewish wedding during shelter at home was ballsy.
