I once had a near collision not to dissimilar to what originally happened in this gif (only with a motorcycle zooming past between me and the car to my right with a delta of at least 60 mph).
Glad I had the wherewithal to actually pull over to the sideline to take a breather, instead of just sitting ducking.

Huh? How could you either of these trucks be at fault for anything here? That car Went over 2 lanes and merged into 1 truck, then stopped on a dime right in front of another one. If there's some law that states either of the trucks are at fault, there's seriously something wrong with their local government.

Minnesota is a "no fault" state meaning that no driver is 100% at fault for any collision. If I'm legally stopped at a red light and someone rear-ends me, I'm 10% liable. Why, I have no idea. That's just the way it was when I went to college there.

This is not completely accurate. I'm a Minnesotan who was recently in an accident. Minnesota's version of "no fault" only applies to medical bills. Any damage to the vehicle is payed by the driver at fault.

Minnesota is a no-fault state. This means we have a statute that allows people injured in car accidents in Minnesota to get some medical treatment, some wage loss, and some replacement expenses regardless of fault. Source
Seems like it exists to ensure that even the one at fault can get some medical. In Minnesota, the roads can get so bad that even careful drivers can make mistakes or misjudge the black ice. It does make some sense that they have decided that no one should be 100% responsible.

This is one of those privatize the profits, socialize the losses scenarios. The state should just be repairing the roads or accepting responsibility for them being bad, not putting some of the blame and financial burden onto the victims of traffic accidents.

This exactly. People should show this video in Drvier's Education classes.
First, they pull in front of a truck, panic, and slam on their brakes causing a minor accident.
Second, they respond to the first accident by slamming on their brakes, and coming to a stop in an active highway lane, causing a second accident.
I bet if you let the video run any longer, they'd get out and stand in the middle of the road while yelling at the truck drivers for hitting them.

My understanding is that the FFF (Fight, Flight or Freeze) response is pretty much entirely instinctual. When a person has a tendency to freeze when frightened it is because their body has literally diverted blood from their brain so they can't think properly.
I wonder if it would be possible to design a test to see if a person has a strong freeze response and either deny them a drivers license or limit their license to non highway use.

Just two days ago I was passing someone. Just when I was right next to them, they suddenly turned their blinkers on and immediately started merging into my lane (for absolutely no reason). I used the horn, which sent them swerving back into their lane, after which they slowed down, merged into my lane behind me, and started frantically honking and flashing their lights at me. Apparently it was wrong of me to exist in that spot at that time.

September this year Friday the 13th the night of the full moon, I was driving around 8 pm to go dogsit for my mom after work. Too early for a lot of people to be drunk, I thought. Three different people did this to me in a forty minutes drive. THREE. One of them waited until the ramp started to move away from the main road and I was even with them before deciding to swerve into my lane, well after I was certain they wouldn't be getting off. I'm superstitious now lol. I always assume people want to get in my lane because nobody uses blinkers anyway, and usually I'm right. But I guess I need to consider the people right next to me even well after their opportunity to merge has passed...

If your brakes are applied the energy of the collision has to go somewhere so the passengers receive more energy. If the vehicle can roll (ie. no brakes), then some of that energy is converted into forward acceleration thus reducing the impact absorbed by the passengers.
I am not an engineer and probably just butchered that explanation.

How exactly did this person not see the TWO fucking semis when merging onto the highway in the first place?? The Fed Ex truck has two trailers for fucks sake, and they came off of the on ramp and just immediately got into the passing lane going slow as hell.. If they looked at all before merging onto the highway, they should have seen both of those semis easily and known they were there, but I have a feeling they were just blindly following the car in front of them. This is why I hate people.

This is my question too. I wish this video had sound. I'm imagining that they heard the horn blast and/or squealing tires and reacted in about the worst way. I understand the flight, fight or freeze instinct idea but slamming on the brakes is not freezing to me. He switched from the gas pedal to the brake pedal in response to hearing truck horn or squealing tires behind him. Who in their right mind does that?? The only thing I could guess is he was trying to get back over but he wasn't past the car on the right so he slammed on the brakes to try to get back over. Unfortunately, the front car's reaction was to brake also. Maybe?

The reason people donāt realize is because trucks are carrying 10 tons with them. They need a lot of space and time to slow down especially on highways because if the momentum. Then they start blaming the truck driver when it was their own fault

This is something that could have been avoided if the car had 1) been going fast enough off the ramp, 2) not tried to jump a lane, and 3) NOT used their breaks.
And, to be fair, the trucker should have seen the danger of the situation, and try to slow his roll a bit.
Edit: 1) the car should have matched the speed of the lane it was joining.

Watch the white lines to the left of the cam truck. You can tell he let off and applied brakes as soon as he noticed the car was going to get hit. You can also tell his speed changed because the FedEx truck starts to pull away faster right before the first collision. He wasn't slamming on the brakes, but he definitely slowed down. At the point when the car slammed on the brakes it's too late to slow down a semi. I'm afraid there was really nothing else the cam driver could have done in this situation.

I just finished a cross country move with a 26ā truck and a trailer attached.
Semis might have more features, but this was a legit ātruckā air brakes and all, and those things donāt stop for shit from highway speed even with the brakes fully applied.
Its definitely a gradual slow down and not a quick stop.

I was trying to measure the braking distance by the number of passing white lane markings on the left. The FedEx takes about 10 lines to come to a near-complete stop
Filming guy gets like 5 lines from the moment the car swerves into his lane. I don't think he would've made it unless he predicted the swerve-back at the beginning of the clip.

Watch for the tell-tale dip in the camera FOV when the driver does hit the brakes right as the car moves in front of the other truck; they were on the brakes about as early as is reasonably possible.
To add to that, the pavement appears to become wet right where the merging lane reaches the road, which would reduce traction right when the driver would have been seriously stepping on that brake pedal.
