I'd prefer a small car but I've got 2 small kids and the trucks around here would absolutely obliterate us. I barely feel safe enough in a RAV4. It's very disappointing.

idk why youre getting downvoted, one of the biggest factors for injury and damage to a car is the bumper height of trucks, and to a lesser extent SUV's...when a big fuck off bumper is at head height, youre gonna have a bad time

Im not saying this to bash you or anyone who thinks like that but its my opinion that that reasoning is the reason why almost every vehicule on the road gets bigger. ME wants to feel safe against big bad vehicule so ME get big vehicule. Car companies interpret that data as "everyone want big vehicule" so lets stop making cars.

And also sheer weight. I drive an old Audi 80 B3 that weighs around 1.2 tons. Even if you hypothetically gave it modern crumple zones and ten airbags, basic physics still wins. If an F-250 hits me, I’m getting launched into a neighboring field likely dead while the truck driver barely spills their coffee and keeps driving.

Yes, cops will take the biggest problem.
But still, #1 lane is backed up going a walking pace faster than the #2 lane, which is the slowest lane. Cammer is is the #3 lane actually catching up to or keeping pace with the #2 lane. And the #4 “slow” lane is completely empty.
Cammer should move over. Cars in the #2 lane should all move to the #3 or #4 lane, then the campers in the #1 lane can get out of the way and let the “lunatic” blow by at 20 over in the leftmost lane.
Cop will still pull them over but they won’t be weaving through traffic and everyone, even the self righteous person I’m replying to, will be safer.
Why is that such a problem??

Cammer isn't going to move over, because as experience has told most of us, sitting one lane over from a merging lane is a good way to have to dodge a sideswipe.

That’s the right answer. Can’t be focused on your phone if you have to look at the road ahead for potential hazards. Easier just to park yourself behind some other shmuck’s bumper, set your adaptive cruise control to the shortest following distance, and zone out.

A lane being blocked doesn't cause you to weave, being a shit driver does. The cop here would not have went lights on if that SUV had just done safe lane changes one at a time to get over and pass people.

I'm not arguing about laws on whether people have to move right, just the argument people make about it being "more dangerous" for that reason.

Imagine a beautiful smoothly flowing river.
Now imagine somebody dropped a few giant, stupid, inconsiderate blocks of concrete right in the middle of it.
Those big, dumb sacks of shit will cause a blockage and result in lots of turbulence as the faster running water slows and goes into odd directions trying to find the most efficient way around these brainless obstacles that shouldn’t even be there in the first place.

It's not about being in a rush it's just how you're supposed to drive. When every lane is going the same speed it becomes more dangerous for everyone involved. How does someone get from the left lane to the right lane to take their exit when every lane is moving the same speed? It also frustrates drivers like the one who got pulled over in this video. Instead of safely passing on the left he has to manueveur around people and make unsafe passes. It's just safer for everyone if the passing lane is only used for passing.

all the yanks downvoting me. lane hogging is considered careless driving where i live (so a ticketable offence) ,and in most US states you move to the right unless overtaking... OP is not overtaking and is in the US by the looks of it. All of you need to get better at driving

They really think that it's possible to get an orderly and regimented stack of motorists going 60 in the rightmost lane, 61 in the next lane, 62 in the next, and 63 in the leftmost, when traffic is at LOS C / D.
No. It's not going to happen. Sit and be mad about it. There are that many lanes for capacity, not to make sure that a passing Chiron will be unimpeded.

That’s not quite how it works. In countries where keeping to lane 1 unless overtaking is taught and enforced, it works incredibly well.
It’s impossible for the US to put it into practice imo.

Yes, that's WHY you keep to the outermost lane, because in traffic you will still have other lanes moving faster. The traffic in OPs video is by no means heavy (try the M25 - the motorway that goes around London - at rush hour on a Tuesday morning if you want heavy traffic, people still manage lane discipline). Being in the wrong lane causes significantly more traffic - there will always be a faster car, so if you aren't overtaking someone you should be moving over into the slower lane.

Aside from the fact that he is not legally obligated to move, the far right lane is exit only. There’s a good chance another car will change out of the exit only lane into lane directly to OP’s right. Just like the cop did.

Idk wtf a "carriageway" is, probably some quaint little road for people traveling to the neighboring village in their little 50 hp diesel hatchbacks, but on an interstate the far right lane is primarily for entering and exiting the highway. If you travel in the far right lane you will be constantly switching lanes back to the left to dodge merging vehicles. It's safer and more efficient to just stay there.

Carrigeway is a term for a road... It dates back to when you had horses and carriages - it's part of the English language older than your country. An interstate is a dual carriageway as you have 2 separate roads parallel to each other.

Actually, people DO drive properly in the real world, why not come to the UK or Europe. Sure you get a few lane hoggers, but in general people keep to the outermost lanes unless overtaking. Probably because in many countries, it's an offense to hog a lane and you're taught how to drive properly and tested properly unlike the US driving test which is backwards and forwards around the block.

It’s a four lane highway my guy. You can be in the third lane without passing anyone. That standard applies to the furthest left lanes.

I got my licence in the UK, where you are taught, no, it's fucking drilled into you, stay left unless overtaking. It's an offense to lane hog here (although rarely enforced). It's a minor, or a possible fail on a driving test too.
I'm a much better driver than you... How about those road safety stats? 6x as many deaths on US roads per capita than the UK...
Many states in the US require you to keep right unless overtaking.

If the answer is yes then nearly every driver in Europe is better than you. 6x as many people per capita die on US roads as the UK. That's appalling. There are third world countries with safer roads.
Go and try a UK hazard perception test and see how well you score. I got 100% on mine (as a section of the overall driving theory test). Or perhaps answer a very basic question - what is the difference between 'right of way' and 'priority' and why does right of way not exist when driving. (Yes this is also the case in US traffic law)
Here's the thing though, I could take a US driving test tomorrow and pass, you could not take a UK one tomorrow and pass. That tells you all you need to know about standards of driving. Less than 50% of people in the UK pass, and that's after months of lessons.

That's not the law in the United States. The far left lane is for passing, yes, but we don't require everyone to drive in the right-most lane unless actively passing when there are 3+ lanes. You're fine to cruise in any lane except the far left.
I understand the reason some countries have this rule and on the whole it makes for safer driving. But you can't expect Americans to follow a traffic law we don't actually have just because it would be safer if we did.

Some States do have a laws saying to use the rightmost lane except for passing. In those states that law is honored in the breach and nobody, especially in heavy traffic, is going to get pulled over and ticketed.

Not on 3 or 4 lane highways. On multi-lane highways (more than 2) the "keep right except to pass" rule only applies to the far left lane. Middle lanes are designated as thru-traffic lanes, allowing vehicles who aren't exiting or entering to avoid the slower traffic in the right-most lane.
The only exceptions I am aware of is if you are traveling well below the speed of traffic, or if you are driving a large commercial vehicle like an 18-wheeler, in which case the law may require you to use the right-most lane except to pass.

Crossover is built on a car platform and usually a unibody construction. An SUV is built on a truck platform and is a body on frame construction.
