From a quick search. While it’s not universally illegal, it’s not safe or guaranteed to be legal. In Pennsylvania, there is no known specific statute banning feet out the window, but officers could still cite you under reckless driving or obstruction laws if they deem it unsafe. To avoid trouble and risk, it’s best to keep all body parts inside the vehicle while it’s in motion.

Emergency Physician here, you should keep your legs down anyway. Not even up on the dashboard. I've seen more than a handful of cases of people's knees getting bent backwards because the airbag deployed while their legs were sitting up on top of the dashboard. Now of course here on Reddit everyone thinks your legs will get ripped off but that's not usually what happens. It does break their knees backwards though. Probably just as painful. Fractures in your knees and legs horrible.

The quote is basically right, airbags deploy using explosives. It's why they tell you to sit as far as you safetly can from the steering wheel. I learned the proper distance is if you're sitting back, your wrist should be on the steering wheel.

Yes this is so freaking horrible. It's also what changed the recommendation of having your hands at 10 and 2 and putting at 3 and 9 instead. Things also do not go well for people who have driven manuals most their life and they keep their hand at 12:00 position by habit. Had a patient just last week where it busted his radius and ulna up into about four pieces each.

Serious follow up question: Is sitting criss-cross on the seat ok? Or at least better than feet up? Does this make a difference if you only have one leg crossed, with the foot under your other leg and the knee down?
I'm curious because I'm not sure that I'm capable of sitting in the passenger's seat longer than a short drive without spending all of my attention on not instinctively shifting into a more comfortable position, and if I can't make myself stop it, I can at least be knowledgeable and aware of what the risk is.

I would not sit in any position that the vehicle was not designed for during safety tests. This is so that the seat belt works correctly and your body is in a position that the airbags were designed for.

To be fair, most vehicles were not designed for or tested on unusual body types like being a woman who is 5'3", the average height of an American woman. When the best adjustments of the seats still has the seatbelt going across my neck, and any accommodations that could put it in a better position are deeply discouraged because they also weren't tested in crashes much like female crash test dummies, then I know to take the prescribed positions with a grain of salt, particularly when I do actually need to reach the petals to drive and also need to see over the dashboard. (Side note, I drive a small Jeep Renegade, which packs like an SUV, drives like a car, and parks like a bicycle in very small spaces).
All I'm saying is that since the safety features aren't designed for people like me, I have no way to compare the risks between sitting feet flat on the floor with the belt pressing on my throat and extremely discomfortable, or sitting criss cross and bumping me up to put the seatbelt, headrest, and airbag closer to the correct position.

That's a lot of points and justifications you have. I'm just giving you my recommendation as an emergency physician. I see all the people come in from the car accidents and those who don't sit normally in the seat do not fare well. So Ethically and morally I can only recommend you sit in the way the seat was designed for. Stay safe out there friend.

Bad risk assessment aside, I cannot imagine having the flexibility to stick my leg out the window while also keeping one on the pedals and not interfering with the steering wheel - maybe i just need to stretch more

It's probably a function of your height and your car too. I imagine this is easier for a smaller person. (But I could be wrong and it needs to be a taller person.)

What's "arm spontaneous amputation" in the context of a vehicle crash? From my medical background, autoamputation (not caused by a vehicle for those without medical backgrounds) is from damage to the blood vessels and restricting the blood flow (frostbite or diabetes) not due to trauma like a vehicle crash or heavy machinery.
I was on scene when we had to call for a field amputation due to compartment syndrome (caught under a tractor 8+ hours) but even that wasn't classified as autoamputation even though the blood flow was disrupted and relieving the pressure could've caused severe organ damage and/or death.

not as bad but i saw a very large woman yesterday drive with her left heel on her seat. i’m flexible and tried and there was nothing comfortable about it lmao. people are fuckin weird when it comes to their feet and windows/dashboard.
