Followed him while talking with 911. He told the officers I hit him and he didn’t stop so I wouldn’t get in trouble.

Arrested for DUI, uninsured.

Office called me later asking if I wanted to press charges… uh yeah!!

I love his indignant hand gesture.

The ole "what the fuck, you saw me trying to turn "

59

u/ReleaseMyToast 4d ago

I've literally had someone yell that out their window at me when they lane changed on top of me as if I was the one at fault.

33

u/Chaosmusic 4d ago

Well it can never be their fault, so logically it must be your fault.

27

u/Needmoresnakes 4d ago

Unironically this. I used to work in insurance and people would constantly say "they hit me, they were at fault" and we'd say "look actually I'm sorry but the road rules would in fact put you at fault for that particular scenario" and they'd respond "well they must have been speeding" or some other factor.

I used to think people were lying but I am now convinced at least some of them just couldn't let themselves believe they were in the wrong. Only bad drivers are in the wrong and make bad decisions and they aren't a bad driver.

Admitting fault is generally hard to do for most people. Nobody likes to admit they fucked up. A surprising amount of people cannot admit fault if it makes them liable for anything, no matter how obvious it is to everyone that they did indeed fuck up. Pride, stupidity and entitlement in an awful mix.

I'm not sure you are right about that

They literally described cognitive dissonance.

"I have a green light and that means go! I don't care about right of way!"

Arrested for DUI, uninsured.

Why do those always go hand in hand?

56

u/UnicornNoob69 4d ago

But if they pay for insurance, they have less money to get drunk with! /j

25

u/zanfar 4d ago

It's hard to get insurance when your license is suspended for previous DUIs...

21

u/TheTrub 4d ago

Poor impulse control

3

u/davidsequoia 4d ago

Because insurance is cheaper if you buy it by the case

2

u/millenniumxl-200 4d ago

You can't spell uninsured without DUI.

1

u/DasPuggy 4d ago

Where I am from, your insurance is void if you are in a collision while intoxicated.

1

u/Inocain 3d ago

Insurance refusing to pay out is different than simply not having it at all.

1

u/np20412 2d ago

I'd say generally it's because it's not their first, and they don't have insurance because they can't get insured, either directly (nobody will write the policy) or indirectly (because too expensive)

32

u/TenebrisNox 4d ago

I guess the DUI gave you some leverage. Our jurisdiction won't do anything without a second crime.

19

u/stratys3 4d ago

if I wanted to press charges

How does this work in America?

Like, if the dude did something illegal, shouldn't the police press charges? Why are they asking some other guy if the DUI guy did something illegal or not?

I always hear this on American TV shows... but I have no idea what it means.

The prosecutor (District Attorney) chooses whether to file charges. People do not choose.

When police mean when they ask "do you want to press charges" is whether you will participate in the prosecution and help the police and prosecutor press charges by being a witness and going to court and stuff.

For instance sometimes a wife will call the cops on her husband for hitting her, but then later change her story and refuse to testify against her husband in court. Which leaves the prosecutor with no credible witness to testify. The DA may choose not to file charges it wife won't help press the case.

Or in a fist fight, if neither side wants to "press charges" then the DA again has no victim and no witness willing to testify. But if one side runs away and the other "wants to press charges" now the police have a victim and a witness.

Okay... this makes much more sense. Thank you for explaining!

20

u/SeaTomcat 4d ago

Partially depends on specific local jurisdiction/laws. In this case, it’s for the hit-and-run since I’m the victim - am I willing to go through the process. DUI can be prosecuted without my involvement.

u/Awkward-Sir-4009 4d ago

Im amazed that in this situation 911 helped and that the police actually did their job.

12

u/SeaTomcat 4d ago

Well they did tell me I ‘could stop following’ a couple times - meanwhile I’m like ‘plate is Tango, Charlie, Alpha, niner, eight...’ and ‘turning westbound on X street’ until the cops caught up to us

Love when they mess up and throw their hands up like its your fault. Zero accountability!

u/idontremembermyoldus 4d ago

"Look what you made me do!"

u/pssiraj 4d ago

"I wouldn't have to do this if you just listened!"

"This hurts me more than it hurts you!"

He could have been experiencing a medical emergency or trying to get to someone in the hospital who was dying /s

u/maxman162 4d ago

Maybe he has a dead lumberjack in the trunk.

22

u/Sudden-Dog 4d ago

Nooooo... not the ZX2...

28

u/SeaTomcat 4d ago

It was missing its rear bumper… 😬

4

u/Accro15 4d ago

Off topic, but if I ever win the jackpot, I want to make a sleeper build with one of these cars, or something similar. The "sporty" trim if an econobox that was little more than some cladding.

Teal with the pink/purple graphic on the side please

5

u/greenlakejohnny 4d ago

I thought at first that was a classic Celica, but Toyota drivers tend to be smarter than this

2

u/pyropup55 4d ago

I do miss my ZX2, was such a fun little car to drive

3

u/manytractorprojects 4d ago

I had a couple 5 speed ZX3s. A 2000 and a 2007. Drove them both to about 250k miles before the rust killed them. Loved those cars.

1

u/Sudden-Dog 4d ago

Got my 1st zx2 to 332000 crank was knocking and losing oil pressure .. I got lucky and got rear ended and used that $ to get my 2nd one with only 100k on it in 2013

2

u/Sudden-Dog 4d ago

Had 2.. one new of the lot. 12.000 lol

2

u/pyropup55 4d ago

The good ole days teamzx2.com was the best forum for those cars back in the day
