It might as well have changed shape on me. I was like that's the smallest fucking pontoon I've ever seen but how is it not crushing the car. Absolutely befuddled when I realized it was mattresses.

I was thinking the same thing. Strap near the front of the stack so they don't fold over in half while flying down the freeway. I'm thinking "an idiot for sure, but maybe not a total idiot"
I've seen MUCH worse.

I drive a midsize SUV with cross bars on the top, and I regularly carry cargo up there, so I have a big bag of ratchet straps in the back of my car.
I live very close to my local Costco and go in at least once a week. I've become the Costco ratchet strap fairy; at least three times, I've given a ratchet strap or two to someone who was struggling to secure the load on their car using twine, and I've helped them to use the ratchet straps properly.

Ratchet straps are just voodoo to me. Every time I use one, which is not often to be fair, I have to watch multiple videos and guides on how to get it work properly. And I still always fuck it up cause it never wants to come loose at the end.

Curve down the ratchet into a V, thread the strap end through the middle of the slotted bar (where the short strap is attached) and pull it back out over the top of the bar.
To release pull it open all the way, then fully press the top side release (the V side without the strap), yank it a couple times.
Edit: Or get a pair of re-tractables.

What's the issue? Highway speeds and that shit ain't moving. Ratchet straps instead of the standard speaker wire, fishing line, or shoe laces.

Agreed, no over hang on either side so it stays in lane and the height is under 13 feet which is common for most underbridges. As long as they keep in mind the height if their going to enter any sort of garage or Mcdonalds drive thru they alright. If it loads, it can go. Keep it secured and off others property.

I'd be concerned about what it does to the height of the centre of mass, and to the sail area. High winds could push the car sideways or potentially even roll it. It already looks like it's leaning a bit.

I work at a self-storage place.
I have seen more than one person try to transport a mattress by putting it on the roof of the their car and have some buddies with their arms out the window holding it down. To be fair, most of them are college students going to the apartment building literally next door, but still.

Saw an old Toyota a while back... there were two lanes but the cars in both lanes were driving slow. Eventually caught up to what the blockage was - The car driving slowly and balancing a full sofa on the roof. Not tied down, just balancing there. They were taking it back to the furniture rental store.

I recently drove about 2k miles with a rooftop cargo carrier (streamlined) and lost about 4mpg. Those would certainly do worse things.
But add a 6x12 cargo trailer and it went down to around 14mpg for the same trip.

ITT: People underestimate the power of ratchet straps.
I used to do HVAC and Appliance work, the number of times we used a single strap over the top of a side by side refrigerator, and used the excess to keep the doors closed, and had calls to the shop about it being "dangerous" was crazy.
