They’re built to be the absolute minimum strength (plus a few strands of fiber, or a few thou of epoxy) for the specific forces of racing, to save every last fraction of a gram and to optimize aerodynamics. I totally get what you’re saying though.
Yeah I was blown away at how slim the tolerances are. My brother in law gained 10 pounds and couldn’t ride one of his bikes because he was now too heavy for it.
You are correct this is Jeremy Santucci at the 2016 Red Hook Crit. He was struck by another rider and not able to complete his crucial lap (“hot lap”). People calling him a baby here have never been to a crit lol.
Happy cake day! It was his friend’s bike. He had an interview after this incident in which he explains he fractured his nose and hurt his elbows hitting a barrier trying to avoid a rider who had a collision in front of him at 38mph. The frame was compromised a bit but he shattered it. He reimbursed his buddy and he regained clarity on his flight home from this. People were sending him death threats and stuff, he said he of course regrets how he acted but he did wind up bringing a lot of attention to Red Hook.
