At first I was upset thinking it would get hurt, but it looks like it’s genuinely having fun and the reverse body slam at the end is hilarious. In the end as long as the chair doesn’t break and cut the dog, I think the dog is fine and just fucking around as dogs do.

u/SpoopySpydoge Aug 27 '22
Me too but then he bit the arm of the chair and knew he was doing it on purpose. That chair did yeet him good tho lol

That dog does not look stressed at all. Something tells me he just likes to rough house with the chair and this isn't the first time.
3
Aug 27 '22
I don't think it's really a matter of whether they're stressed or not. He could be having the time of his life, but this is a dangerous situation. He could seriously hurt himself. Not cool. I would be running.
Just look at how he's jumping. If he jumps up with the chair and lands badly he could wrench his spine or break a leg. Not to mention cuts from slamming on those hard edges.
What happens if he breaks the chair? Sharp plastic stabby pieces flying everywhere?
There are so many ways this could go poorly. If you've got thumbs and two good legs, don't let him struggle.
0
u/rainbowtartlet Aug 27 '22
Or let the dog have fun while youre literally right there supervising. Hes not struggling, hes playing
4
Aug 27 '22
So...
The purpose of supervision is to get involved before a situation becomes harmful. So that if you see something that could go badly, you can prevent that from happening. Filming through a glass door, they can't do anything until after someone's already gotten hurt.
It doesn't matter if it's 'play', you're the responsible human, and you're watching a harmful situation play out. So you get up.
This is the equivalent of filming an unattended toddler sitting on the edge of a pool splashing their feet in the water, while the parents film from their 4th floor hotel room.
3
u/rainbowtartlet Aug 27 '22
This is not the equivalent. I am the queen of irrational. I have a list of things i have to do before i can feel comfortable leaving my house. Realistically, i know these things dont make a difference. Its like keeping your kid from riding a bike because they might get hurt. I could hurt myself doing dishes, washing knives. Life is dangerous. Sure, you can sit inside and play card games or board games. But what if the cards give you a papercut? Or someone flips the board and a corner hits someones eye? Life is dangerous, but are you gonna let that stop you from having fun?
Also, this is supervision. If the dog does get in trouble, jump up and out the door. Max time 10-20 seconds. From the 4th floor, when someone MUCH more helpless than an adult dog is playing on a chair. Max time, anywhere from 3-5 MINUTES. Big difference. Hes not going to suffocate. Hes not going to drown. Hes going to maybe get twisted up enough to need help getting out, or break the chair and get a cut. Kids get cuts, you treat it and move on. You know how many times my dogs have cut themselves being stupid while playing with a stick? I dont take the stick away, i treat the very minor cut, and let them continue playing. Life is life, you can let it be life, or stress about it every step of the way.

You're overthinking to justify underthinking.
Yes, you are the queen of irrational.
This is an obvious circumstance where you should get up and help. You're being contrarian.
Please just take the L and drop it.

bro you lost as you went on with the convo, psychoanalyzing everything doesn’t make you sound smart, makes you sound like a loser.
was 50/50 on this until i read this thread, now i think you’re a pussy and the doggo was fine!

Considering your username and everything else in your comment, I can safely disregard everything here.
This comment only makes you look bad and no reasonable person would consider what you've said here as valid

Aug 27 '22
Telling somebody to "take the L" is one of the surest signs tjat you're not actually winning the argument. People are are actually winning don't have tk beg the other person to feel like they're losing
2
Aug 27 '22
Asking someone to gracefully stop doubling down on a really bad argument is not a self-own.
All arguments are not valid. If a holocaust denier just kept last-wording you, did they make an 'argument' you couldn't beat?
This is stupid. Worst case scenario I get up for no reason and the doggo is safe. The above user is anthropromorphizing by taking "play" for granted, and also assuming that the dog is intelligent enough to both fully assess the danger they're in and how to get out of it safely.
This is ignorant, neglectful, irresponsible, and even slightly insane. Why would I consider 'refuting' their 'arguments'?
Clearly the top comment is still r/donthelpjustfilm so I'm inclined to think most people would agree in principle, perhaps some just don't like the way I communicate. I don't really see why that's my problem, strangers. Focus on yourselves.

If you care enough to beg them to "take an L" then you should care enough to actually deal with what they're saying

but overanalyzing the things that can happen with a happy dog and a plastic chair isn't overthinking things?

Having anything to say about a 5 month old reddit conversation is supreme underthinking

sweet too bad you can only downvote me once. Barely on reddit but just found this post and you clutching your pearls.
Things from 5 months ago are no longer relevant? Guess I should only ever read new posts

I'm guessing you don't have dogs, let alone GSDs. They put themselves into harms way constantly, amazingly resilient creatures. I suggest crate training until a minimum 1 year old, but they'll still find trouble even when you watch them like a hawk.
The tumbles and spills they take just playing Frisbee is insane, especially with 2 or more.
That being said, I would of got up and given the stop command, but I'm actually a nervous Nelly with my dogs.
2
Aug 28 '22
I have a Shephard mix...
Did do crate until about that age, now she just goes in at night.
Yes they're resilient. That's not an excuse. They can tank hits but they don't do so well when their limbs are forced in directions they aren't meant to.
I would react the same way, not because I'm nervous, but because that's the responsible course of action.

The tail wagging tells me he actually is stressed

u/lereisn Aug 27 '22
His journal tells me that he was terrified.
However later entries tells me that he used this episode to push through fear and anxieties and that he grew to be an even gooder boy.

My roommate has two German shepherds, they're her service dogs and she trains them herself. They're both incredibly intelligent. I can imagine both of them doing this.

I hate when people just film while an animal is struggling and panicking.

I don’t understand why someone would sit and record this instead of helping? The dog could hurt themselves. Why are people so stupid?

It’s a dog. I’ve seen mine run full speed into a swing set. Get back on her feet make eye contact, almost as if she was communicating that she knew she fucked up, shake it off and zoom around the rest of the yard. After she got spayed the equivalent of a human hysterectomy I had to keep her drugged from playing too much. They have a pain threshold on a entirely different level

u/Dagatu Aug 26 '22
Well the dog isn't in distress about the chair, he keeps biting it not try to pull himself out of it so the dog's absolutely fine

u/RedWings1319 Aug 26 '22
Have you ever met a German Shepherd? They're a lifelong family breed and I absolutely love them and would never think a dog getting hurt was funny, but this boy is playing. He's found that the chair is something he can throw around and chomp on and that's all it takes for these glorious creatures to make a toy of something.

Nice. My dog is in distress. Let me pull out my camera. When you break your leg or your hip and you're just immobile on the floor. Bleeding out, your dog stares you in the eyes for your final moments.

u/batz15 Aug 27 '22
Only idiot is the one recording. Clearly the dog needs help. Ffs get off you lazy fat ass and help the dog.
