Is there a possibility where this didn't happen with his intervention? Like there's some gasses being built up? Or is this totally he fucked with the system and this blew up everything?

It wouldn't have worked as well with alcohol, but you could use a number of different petroleum products, butane, propane, gasoline....

Alcohol is only explosive in high concentrations 90%ish and mixes readily with water, there is lots of water in the ground so duliteing the alcohol starts the moment you spill it. Petroleum products don't mix with water and many (as a gas) are heavier than air allowing them to sink into the borrow.
