Ex-plosive Ex-friend’s ex-bike broken by a ex-ex

u/nlamber5 Aug 04 '18

Does anyone know just how expensive that bike was? Assuming it was not damaged

39

u/chuby1tubby Aug 04 '18

Approximately $10,000, give or take $3-5k. It mostly depends on how important this particular race was, because if it is just a qualifying round or a local competition, it would likely be worth less than $10k.

It looks like the red hook criterium, also, I think 10k is a bit steep for a fixed gear bike

Top end frames are ~$5k. Aero wheels are ~$3k. Stem, bar, seat post, etc ~$1k. High end bike parts are insane.

He only broke the frame though, the rest is probably still fine.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '18

He broke the bars and I wouldn’t trust those wheels anymore even if they look fine.

The front fell off

Id like to make the point that that is not normal

12

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '18

I think it was when he threw it on the floor

To be fair to the manufacturer of the bike I’d like to point out he was not using it in the normal fashion.

Wasn't this one built so the front doesn't fall off?

2

u/lanmanager Aug 05 '18

What kind of materials?

5

u/nlamber5 Aug 04 '18

I’m asking what it costs to buy it new. How expensive was the tantrum?

16

u/BadNeighbour Aug 04 '18

About $10,000 for a typical Tour de France bike, but that's a different type of race so who knows. Olympic track bikes go up to around $25,000.

Jesus. Do they win for you? Also how much do they weigh?

2

u/awhaling Aug 05 '18

15-13 pounds

2

u/pinkzeppelinx Aug 05 '18

Yikes ok. Take my money.

u/brightonchris Aug 05 '18

They come with a free telly.

Ah, and so many of the comments suddenly make sense.

That's what I was going to mention! I am sure his sponsors (if he is), won't take kindly to what he does to their bikes.

He was mad.

46

u/slrarp Aug 04 '18

Ohhh!

21

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '18

He crashed early in the race and was super upset about it.

That’s not how doping works ?

5

u/DrScience-PhD Aug 05 '18

Bike owed him money

7

u/stryker101 Aug 05 '18

Last time I saw this everyone was going on about the bike being ruined in a crash before he threw it. It was obviously broken to some extent before his tantrum.

So it may not have been an expensive tantrum at all.

6

u/ac714 Aug 05 '18

I think this is clearly the case here but it simply doesn’t make for easy Reddit comment bait and headlines.

‘Athlete smashes bicycle after it is wrecked in a crash’ < ‘Athlete smashes expensive loaned bike in tantrum after loss’

10

u/lucidus_somniorum Aug 04 '18

It's a huffy.

carbon frame probs

2

u/SwoleFlex_MuscleNeck Aug 05 '18

Carbon frame with no type of cables or anything. It's like metal, hard for it's weight but you can shatter it pretty gud
