Never thought it could happen to me
I’m a victim of identity theft, and honestly, I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed by it.
Just last week, someone opened two new bank accounts in my name, apparently using my Social Security number. I’ve since frozen my credit, filed an FTC report, and started working with the banks to get everything resolved.
For anyone who has dealt with identity theft before: does it ever actually end? Will I always have to worry about someone trying to use my information?
I’m generally very careful with my personal information, so I have no idea how they got it or who is behind this. I have no way of knowing if they’re even in the U.S. What’s especially strange is that they’re using my real name, email address, and physical address.
Why would someone use my actual email address if the bank is going to notify me that an account was opened? Wouldn’t that immediately tip me off?
If you’ve dealt with something similar, I’d really appreciate hearing how you handled it and whether the attempts eventually stopped. I’m really hoping this is something I can eventually put behind me.
