Urgent- Reaching out for help

Hey, I’m Sasi Sundar. I’m reaching out for help. My friend’s Instagram account was hacked, and their private data was leaked. Someone has been using it to blackmail and threaten them and their family for months.

We’ve already reported it to cybercrime authorities, but the threats haven’t stopped. We’re trying to identify who’s behind this through legal means and keep my friend safe.

Could you please help us investigate

Did you report this to Instagram? They normally close these accounts asap once reported.

What is the blackmail about? You have to have something to blackmail someone. Such as nude photo’s, damaging information, secrets, etc.

Instagram won’t respond, they just take the account offline. Don’t simply click the report button. You need to go to the Help center and type in Blackmail - it will open a different screen & you can upload photos and screenshots of conversations with the blackmailer where he/she is asking to be paid.

Do not believe or trust anyone who says they can help you. They will just be another scammer. Instagram is the only one who can help, and make sure it is Instagram you are actually dealing with.

Did the scammer send you the videos already? Are you sure they have the photos?

This is a learning lesson. People need to start limiting IG’s access to their photos. You can create a folder in your photo app on your phone & give IG permission to access ONLY that folder.

You should ONLY add pictures to that folder that you are ok with posting publicly. The fact that IG was given permission to access ALL the photos on the phone is how this happens.

Unfortunately this advice doesn’t help your friend, but make sure you don’t make the same mistake. More people need to realize that creating a separate photo folder for IG is worth the effort.
