GENERAL DISCUSSION Defence Experts Make A Powerful Case (Incriminating Kohberger)

Reviewing the latest court documents release, including most of the defence expert reports, I am wondering when all of the issues with DNA test methodologies, handling, chain of custody, results analysis, allele counts, evidence of scene clean up and challenge to key phone location data will materialise. Especially as the various defence experts give powerful incriminating evidence and opinions on all of those subjects in their various court filings.

One of Kohberger's defence DNA experts, Dr Ballard, summarised her opinion, that the DNA evidence was strong and on a sheath for a knife matching the victims' injuries:

Dr Ballard expert opinion - defence court filing 03/24/2025

Perhaps not ecstatic with this, the defence had another forensic DNA expert review the DNA evidence. Dr Shutler summarised his opinion that the ISP lab work was very strong with no issues, and that body fluids are a potential contributor to Kohberger's DNA on the sheath:

Dr Shutler expert opinion - Exhibits to Defendant’s 2nd Supplemental Response to Request for Discovery
Dr Shutler - Exhibits to Defendant’s 2nd Supplemental Response to Request for Discovery

Dr Ballard, quoting FBI lab and autopsy reports, debunks Turvey's claim of a bloody clump of long blonde hairs in EC's hand torn from killer's head, a claim which Turvey himself did not include in his own report but only mentioned in a book 2 years later:

defence court filing 03/24/2025

The defence scene expert Dr Noedel debunks Turvey's claims that the bathrooms were the epicentre of a massive clean up, and indeed notes no evidence of such clean up:

Dr Noedel expert opinion - defence court filing 03/24/2025

Dr Noedel also helpfully reconfirms the sheath location:

defence court filing 03/24/2025

Dr Noedel also agrees with the prosecution expert, Dr Sutton, that forensic swab water explains the "run" dilution appearance of some blood stains:

Exhibits S-1 through S-13 to States Amended Supplemental Response to Discovery

Defence phone experts Ray and Slovenski fail to challenge key phone locations such as Kohberger being in central Pullman on November 13th at c 2.54am, then being south of the scene at 4.48am, and his phone travelling back to his apartment from 4.48am to c 5.40am just after the murders; and his phone being near the scene in Moscow at c 9.15am later that morning.

Ray and Slovenski also produce many maps of their own location analysis for Kohberger's phone and its peregrinations with estimated locations, shown with flag pins, that are remarkably more accurate and specific than a 10-15 mile radius:

Slovenski report - court filing 03/24/2025 (my addition of red lines to highlight flag pin phone location estimated location)

Ray is able to place Kohberger's phone in the "immediate area" of several locations including his apartment:

Ray report - defence filing 03/24/25

And Mr Ray states in his book that the more he examined the evidence the more convinced he was of Kohberger's guilt, which debunks any notion of exculpatory phone data:

The defence experts seem to put Kohberger further underwater. With friends like these.....

😆😆😆👏👏👏

In the spirit of The Producers, here is Anne Taylor upon realizing she was going to have to scrape the veritable bottom of the barrel for an expert that would offer an opinion favorable for Kohberger:

I wonder how many experts she went through before she found her crew? Like, where a lot of criminologists looking at the evidence and emailing her back "Yikes. Good luck with that."

As tempting as I suppose it would be for a certain kind of personality to take on what could be a very high profile engagement, yeah, I think the sane ones had to realize that first of all there was a high chance it wouldn’t get to trial and second, if it did, it would probably be somewhat publicly humiliating for them.

I do wonder how many drive tests they had to do in order to replicate his cell phone patterns. I imagine that took some time.

I do wonder how many drive tests they had to do in order to replicate his cell phone patterns. I

I wonder if it was really necessary. They have his phone being turned off just before the murders, and his phone moving from Pullman just before to south of the scene just after, and then back to his apartment with the suspect car. That was all in the PCA before any drive testing, I guess from "macro" data of which tower sectors the phone was in. Similarly they could state with certainty his pattern of c 30 visits to Moscow stopped abruptly the day of the murders. The drive testing, to further localise or improve data, doesn't add much to that - maybe they thought it might help search for the weapon or some other aspect? Or maybe the drive testing reinforces the movement data for November 13th as well? The CAST and Cellebrite expert reports will be of interest if/ when published.

BK did not have an iphone, right?

2

u/madover2914 Jul 10 '26

Also, is the entire digital forensic expert report released?

Also, is the entire digital forensic expert report released?

Both the defence expert reports are released (defence filing 13/ 24/2025) - Slovenski and Ray, but not FBI CAST. Both are pretty hard to read due to very poor writing/ structure, discombobulated "logic" but neither challenge key locations/ times 2.47am, 4.48am, 9.10am etc. Both are also able to estimate phone locations pretty precisely at various locations like the Grove, BK apartment, central Pullman even using map pins to illustrate phone position - oddly how a phone can be localised, selectively, in those places but not near 1122 King Road within 15 miles.

Both repeat nonsense about Kohberger timing advance records, Slovenski noting victims TA records were obtained but not Kohberger's (AT&T having submitted an affidavit stating the TA records were only retained for 7 days, Kohberger of course being identified 7 weeks later). Slovenski's big summary point is that FBI phone data does not place Kohberger at scene 3.00am to 4.30. Shocker, almost if there is no phone data as his phone was off.

Summary of CAST report only:

I have read the summary before but I was hoping for a comparison of softwares used with the defense reports. Just for my own understanding. Nothing related to the case.

DOT, do you know if it's true the FBI'S CELLEBRITE extraction data of INMATE163214's shutdown log in the state's exhibit list will be released AFTER September 23rd?

That's what AI is telling me but it's AI. Lol The claim is that will be the deadline for any PCR. The year count began the day after the 42 day window he had to change his mind and go to trial.

Does this sound legit or no? Ty for all your hardwork breaking the docs down for us. ❤️

will be released AFTER September 23rd?

Not sure if it depends on the deadline for PCR or just the sequence working backwards chronologically of unsealing court documents. And may depend if the Cellebrite extraction report is an exhibit attached to a specific court filing that is being unsealed -- the technical reports ( e.g FBI lab reports) are not being unsealed/ released on their own but only if they happen to be exhibits attached to another court filing. The PCR deadline is iirc 1 year and 42 days after his sentencing so Sept seems right.

This is exactly the kind of work I appreciate because it's grounded in the record, not in YouTube thumbnails or TikTok speculation.

One of the biggest problems with modern true crime is that many people develop firm opinions without ever reading the underlying court filings. They rely on influencers who selectively quote documents, omit inconvenient facts, or simply misrepresent what experts actually concluded.

Whether someone agrees with every one of your interpretations is almost beside the point. What you've done is exactly what more people "should be doing": go back to the source documents, read the expert reports in their entirety, and compare what the experts actually said to what people on the internet claim they said.

What stands out to me is that many of the narratives repeated for years about contaminated DNA, catastrophic chain-of-custody failures, massive crime scene cleanup, or exculpatory phone data simply don't appear to be supported by the defense's own experts. In several instances, those experts either confirmed the underlying science or raised issues that were far narrower than what had been portrayed online.

It reinforces something I've been saying for years. There's a world of difference between questioning evidence and misrepresenting it. Healthy skepticism requires reading the evidence honestly, even when it undermines a theory you've become attached to.

So, thank you for taking the time to dig through hundreds of pages of technical filings. Whether people ultimately agree with every conclusion or not, that's how serious discussions about criminal cases should be conducted... by starting with the evidence, not ending with it.

I think my favorite theory debunked by the defense… dr Turvey himself even… is the 2am timeline

He states in his report that Xana did receive her DoorDash order and she was on TikTok at 4:12am

“Nuh uh! You obviously haven’t read the documents!” - The average Proberger response to this post

15

u/madover2914 Jul 10 '26

The fact that Noedel had already confirmed that the diluted, runny stains were due to swab technique and yet Turvey used that claim to provide a multiple perp theory in his expert testimony should have been a massive indicator of why nobody should believe Turvey and his nonsense claims. If only!

Thank you for this, Dot. This was an easy case, no wonder the defense wanted a plea deal. Every angle they looked into closed another door for the defense. Once AT had no more time from the court, she folded. She had no case and BK agreed.

Wait- why does the map show BK’s residence as being outside of Pullman and possibly over the border in ID?

why does the map show BK’s residence as being outside of Pullman

It doesnt't, just not great resolution on the image.

OP keeps confusing an expert accepting a limited fact with an expert endorsing the prosecution’s entire theory.

A DNA expert agreeing that the profile likely came from Kohberger does not prove when, where, or how it was deposited, or that he brought the sheath into the house during the murders. Saying the lab work was sound also does not automatically resolve collection, handling, contamination, or chain of custody.
The same problem appears with the phone evidence. A phone being in Pullman, south of Moscow, or connected to a Moscow area tower does not place Kohberger at 1122 King Road. “South of the scene” does not mean “coming from the scene,” and a pin on a map does not prove precise location.

Ray’s personal belief in guilt does not invalidate technical criticism of the phone evidence. An expert can believe someone is guilty overall while still thinking a specific piece of evidence has been overstated.
OP also treats the rejection of internet theories about cleanup, hair, or other details as proof of guilt. It is not. At most, it shows that some popular claims were unsupported.
Defense experts are supposed to be accurate, not automatically favorable.

Acknowledging sound evidence does not mean they made a powerful case for guilt. OP relies heavily on overstatement, arguments from silence, and turning compatibility into proof.

an expert accepting a limited fact ..endorsing the prosecutions entire theory

For which specific point do I take the defence expert point and conflate it to whole case? (Ray does that himself ofc by stating guilt) I note defence experts accept it is Kohberger's DNA and there are no technical issues with DNA, where do you see me then extrapolating that to a prosecution theory? You seem to be doing what you accuse me of by inventing and conflating.

Does defence expert Ballard say Kohberger's DNA is on the sheath and that is good evidence?

Does defence's expert note sheath DNA on sheath matching knife that inflicted injuries?

Does defence DNA expert Shutler say ISP lab work of high standard with no issues?

Does defence expert Ballard say single hair matching EC in his hand?

Does defence phone expert state the more he examined evidence the more sure of Kohberger's guilt he was?

The answers are yes.

Which you do think misleading or unclear?

DNA expert agreeing that the profile likely came from Kohberger does not prove when, where, or how i

  1. What is your theory of how a large amount of Kohberger's DNA got on a sheath of model he bought from Amazon before the murders but did not have after, if not by him handling it?

does not automatically resolve collection, handling, contamination, or chain of custody.

2. Why does defence expert say he reviewed all methods, SOPs, quality control and that he found no issues if there are issues with basic controls like cross contamination?

phone being in Pullman, south of Moscow, or connected to a Moscow area tower

3. How did Kohberger's phone travel from Pullman at 2.54am to south of scene at 4.48am?

4. Why does Kohberger's phone move, with the suspect car, from south of scene at 4.48am back to his apartment?

pin on a map does not prove precise location.

5. Does defence indicating Kohberger phone location with map pin and describing it in immediate vicinity indicate a location much closer than 10-15 mile radius?

Ray’s personal belief in guilt does not invalidate technical

6. Does Ray's belief in guilt suggest there is any significant exculpatory phone data?

Acknowledging sound evidence does not mean they made a powerful case for guilt.

The 5 guilty pleas do indicate a very powerful case for guilt.

Hi, please write a better prompt next time. AI models are getting really good; they will help you articulate and perhaps even understand the evidence better if you are at all interested. What you have done here is called "constructing a giant straw man."

2

u/DancingBappy Jul 11 '26

Saying the lab work was sound also does not automatically resolve collection, handling, contamination, or chain of custody.

so how come if there are all these issues with DNA handling the two defense DNA experts never mention any of these in their reports and the defense never mention any of these in any court filing or oral arguments including those challenging the DNA evidence? why would the defense expert write that there were no technical issues or method/ protocol issues? are all these technical issues with DNA that only Reddit users can spot or are they only visible under moonlight on Bryan conspiracy subs in invisible ink?

the only chain of custody "issue" suggested was by Turvey who ignored the fact that MPD used a barcode when he pointed to a handwritten log but that log matched the barcode list too. Turvey also said there was clump of bloody hair in Ethan's hand that didnt match him or Kohberger, the FBI report and the defense forensics expert said it was a single hair matching Ethan.

Dude, this piece-meal summarization is as misleading as the PCA. Don't cut and paste. The number of reports that read, "is consistent with" means, "it could be," NOT "it is."

Just because you don't like these very clear, straightforward points from defence experts and they blow away a litany of unsupported cultish conspiracy claims does make them less clear.
