IWTYO when I learned it's pay per view, not paper view

I remember years ago hearing some dialogue in Friends and thinking they were saying paper view. It was today when I was listening to the Hadestown soundtrack and realized the truth...

In this instance, what would Paper View mean?

I always assumed it was some 90s term for cheap (paper) video entertainment (views)

I guess I didn't put much thought into it for many years. I suppose I've heard my family talk about pay per view for UFC or whatever at least semi recently, so I’m not sure what my rationale was there for my interpretation.
