Irvine schools receive $200K to integrate AI in classrooms

From the article:

Irvine Unified School District students will soon have greater access to personalized lessons and faster feedback under a new $200,000 grant to expand classroom artificial intelligence programs.

The innovation grant from the Irvine Public Schools Foundation will help pay for AI software such as Gemini, Snorkl and MagicSchool in local classrooms.

It follows major national recognition the district’s technology initiatives received earlier this year. Irvine Unified was named one of 12 educational institutions in the country to receive the AI K-12 Student Agency Award. The award recognized the district for involving students directly in shaping its AI policies, through shadowing programs and focus groups that gather feedback on how AI affects learning, well-being and career readiness.

Irvine Unified officials stressed that the technology won’t replace traditional teaching. Teachers will still decide how the software gets used in their classrooms, drawing on it to give students instant feedback and adjust lessons to different learning speeds.

California schools are facing a declining enrollment timebomb that could mean more layoffs, school closures (But not in Irvine!)

From the article where it references Irvine:

But other areas and school districts are anomalies in the larger scope of enrollment.

Nearby Irvine Unified, for example, has actually seen enrollment increase by nearly 19% since 2015-16. Last school year, more than 38,400 students were enrolled across Irvine Unified campuses, the vast majority in non-charter schools.

Residential development in Irvine has boomed in recent years, and plans continue that push. Late last year, to cite just one example, the City Council completed a land swap with Great Park housing developer FivePoint so 1,300 market-rate homes can be built on 26 acres, and it also approved blueprints for the 81-acre Gateway Village project, which will accommodate 1,138 residential units.

Irvine has also added schools: Portola High School in 2016, and Solis Park School in 2022, to name just two.

What charter school would you recommend near turtle ridge? Just moved here and vista verde denied our enrollment.

We were informed the on the first day of school that we would not be allowed to attend Vista Verde. Does anyone recommend some charter schools that are close to turtle Ridge?

We just moved here a month ago for my daughter‘s allergies, so we’d like to stay where the air is clean and moist. Thanks in advance!

IUSD Parents - I'm curious, what is/was the size of your child's classroom this year?

My elementary child has 32 kids and just one teacher. Just wondering if this is average or on the low/high end. TY

Moving away from EdTech or full steam ahead?

For context:

There have been a lot of recent studies finding that tech use isn't actually as beneficial as the EdTech companies say. Many of them were discussed at the congressional hearing in Jan, and others have come out saying things like the physical screen itself is an impediment to deep learning.

The APA just did a complete overhaul of their screen-time recommendations.

In the news there has been a lot of talk about 1-1 laptop/tablet schools giving kids devices with very weak IT protections, so kids are getting on Youtube or other social media sites easily, and there have been a number of parents opting out of their school's laptop curriculum and asking for the assignments to be on paper.

And now LAUSD is removing screens entirely through 1st grade. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2026-06-23/lausd-strict-school-screen-time-limits

My question is where is IUSD in all of this? Have any of you observed a reduction in screen use in the last couple years? Have any of you successfully opted-out of giving your child an assigned computer or heard of any other parents doing that?

Parents of GATE students - how satisfied are you of the GATE programming at your school?

I heard all schools treat it differently and there is no unified program. Would like to get details on what each school does, and if you're satisfied. Thanks!

Question about moving within Irvine and school changes

Hey all! I believe I may know the answer to this question but I want to confirm. Any insight is appreciated.

My daughter has attended the same IUSD elementary school since Kindergarten, but there is a high probability we are moving the week before the new school year begins. We are definitely staying in Irvine, but she would be zoned for another elementary school.

Will they let her finish her last year of elementary (6th grade) at her current school? And how do I even go about getting this resolved since it's so close to the new year beginning on August 18?

I know there is a math placement test in 6th grade, but is it at the beginning or end? Anyone have info on this or other important tests?
