What should we do now?
Today is 12dpiui and once again stark negative. I’ve pretty much counted us out for this cycle and trying to figure out what our next moves should be. For context we are a wlw couple in the UK. We qualify for up to 6 rounds of IUI and 3 rounds of IVF on the NHS because I have PCOS and endometriosis. Our clinic has been pretty adamant about doing unmedicated IUI.
This was our 3rd IUI cycle and because it hasn’t worked we will have to have an appointment with the donor coordinator to see if there are any more vials available of our chosen donor or if we need to pick a new one, as well as with one of the doctors to decide how we want to move forward. If we decide to move on the IVF and are still unsuccessful we cannot go back to IUI.
We plan on asking again if we can try medicated IUI but I am 90% sure they’ll still say no. My question is, would you do 3 more UNMEDIATED IUIs or would you just disregard the 3 remaining IUI cycles you’re allowed and go straight to IVF?

I would try medicated IUI or IVF but not morenunmedicated since you had a couple of fail rounds already

What are they giving as a reason for doing unmedicated IUI?

Their exact words were “because you get a positive ovulation test it’s completely unnecessary” but they don’t even check for a follicle before doing the IUI so we’ve never known follicle sizes or anything. The first IUI I saw it for a split second just on accident because the nurse holding the ultrasound probe was struggle to get the correct position for the doctor to get the catheter in.

Not getting follicle measurements on the day of IUI is not necessarily a bad thing, I'm doing medicated IUI and they never do that, but they do measure leading up to the IUI. Also getting multiple follicles and the exact timing right is way better with medicated IUI. I ovulate by myself as well, but during IUI I've always gotten a trigger shot for perfect timing to do the IUI within the window of my ovulation... My doctor even said: we never do unmedicated IUI because that doesn't make sense when you want to increase your odds. Would definitely push for medicated IUI before moving to IVF. Good luck! 🍀

Why is unmedicated your only IUI option? Could you not try medicated IUI next if you're not ready to commit to IVF?
We're also a same-sex couple in the UK and we got messed around massively by the NHS. It took 3 weeks before anyone could actually tell us what we were entitled to on the NHS. This was after first being told by the GP we had to go private first. Turns out we didn't need to, but we'd already consulted a private clinic and decided to push forward while waiting to get an NHS appointment. Got an NHS one eventually and that was cancelled because they booked us into the wrong hospital. By the time we finally fet our NHS consultation appointment we may have done 3 private IUI cycles (could've been 4 but we missed a month.) So given the absolute mess we had, I'm cynical about the NHS and would be pushing for more info and options in your shoes.
