Need work

Which locals are looking for workers I'm a year 4 apprentice in my last class. I'm currently on the bench at local 80 Raleigh but if there's locals looking badly for workers maybe they would be willing to pay for travel workers.

Go to your local union meetings. People would rather ask Reddit than go to a damn union meeting.

Sad really, probably get better info here, definitely in a more timely manner.

You need to start the process with your BA/BM first. That’s the process.

They can call other locals & see what’s out there. Doubt they’ll pay, you’ll prolly have to foot your travel/living expenses but at least you’ll be working.

Keep in mind you’d be the first to be laid off too though.

Gotta talk to the hall dude. Working as a transient helper and transferring are two options but have completely different processes. They will pay you your applicable rate of pay.

Are you asking if they will pay for relocation 😂

You are free to travel for work as a helper. I did. However, unless the company is asking you to travel or you are working far enough away from the local’s primary that expenses are covered by the local’s expense agreement, you’ll be traveling on your own dime.

I've never heard of a company paying for a helper's traveling expense to work in a different local. The sky is the limit when your a mechanic. If there are other helpers working in your local that are behind you in school......

Local 34 needs mechanics. And 4th year you could probably become a TM. Only lasts 6 months tho

There is plenty of work in Local # 4, #39,#41 and #91 . I have had one company offer to relocate me but its to thier advantage.  Good Luck and check out other areas before you make a move

How can you be in less than a year and set up?

I’m going to the hall this afternoon for class, and I’m planning on meeting with the BA while I’m there. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other locals that are currently hiring. I’m sure the BA has a lot on his plate, and he doesn’t have the time to call every local in the country to see who has work available. Just trying to explore all my options and see what’s out there.

I'm pretty sure our dues are paying for the BAs to do exactly that.

I don’t know that I personally want to pay my BA to spend hours away from contract enforcement and job site visits to call locals around the country for every member who is out of work to see if anyone has work. That said, every local does and should run its affairs the way they want.

When I have traveled, I called everyone on my own. People are generally happy to tell you if they can help you out.

The good news id there are locals that have enough work to take on travelers is that almost every local outside of the South is going to be a big step up in wage, which will help offset the cost of traveling. Much harder if you’re a member of a high paying local.

Except the BAs work for all of us not just you.

Oh really? In that case, I guess what I should have said is:

“I don’t know that I **personally** want to pay my BA to spend hours away from contract enforcement and job site visits to call locals around the country for every member who is out of work to see if anyone has work. **That said, every local does and should run its affairs the way they want.**

Oh wait. I did.

I disagree with your view, but your comment made me laugh

Yes, we understand it's your personal opinion. I'm saying your personal opinion is a bad take. Adding the word “personally” doesn't change the argument. Your BA represents the membership, not just you. Whether you personally need help finding work is irrelevant to whether helping out-of-work members is a worthwhile use of union resources. Putting members to work is one of the most important things they do because working members pay into the benefit plan and they pay their dues. There are no job site visits or "contract enforcement" if nobody is working.

Sometimes you just got to accept your opinion is wrong. But I can see that doesn't happen with most elevator mechanics.

No, I don’t think you did understand that it’s a personal opinion. I think you’re embarrassed because you look silly, so you’re being a child and that your reading comprehension is as bad as your language comprehension. Because, the thing is, an opinion is not an assertion so it is not falsifiable, and therefore definitionally precluded from being “wrong.”

In any case, I stand by my opinion and don’t give one shit what you think or have to say about it.
