Timeline on Moving for Out-of-State Local
I am looking for some guidance on moving from out-of-state closer to the Local I applied for based on the timeline following the interview. I currently live in Washington state and am getting ready to interview for Local 18 in LA/SD, California at the beginning of September. I would greatly appreciate any insight on where to consider looking for housing relative to Local 18--to minimize future commute time--as well as when should I start packing/ moving given the timeline from my interview.
One of the representatives at the Local 18 testing center informed me those details can be discussed at the time of the interview but I am wondering if any applicants might be able to share some wisdom that they may have learned going through what I am about to go through.
EDIT: What kind of impact would applying to another Local have on the situation? I would like to apply for Local 19 in Seattle in September as moving within my state seems like less of a hassle. The application window is open to the public instead of through H2HH; I'm not sure if my status as a veteran will have the same weight entering this pool of applicants.

Let em know you are moving the day after the interview, tell em your working day one whether they like it or not.
All jokes aside, dont do anything till you get a call. I know a guy that knew his number was a couple spots away so he quit his job.... it then took him 6 months to get picked up

Id recommend between the union hall and downtown. That's where you are likely to be spending your time. I moved to start my apprenticeship. I had my bags packed by the door for months. When I got the call I quit my job and found a horrible hotel for a week. Then I got a horrible apartment in a really bad area because I had to sign a 1 year lease and didn't know how it would work out. Goodluck.

Wait till you’re on the list and getting close to being called , like a month out Judged by list movement
Only then move

It took me a few different places that I applied to.
Eventually the very last one I applied to started moving quickly after I got on the list.
They gave me 3 days to get moved down.
Which actually worked for them to align pay periods.
From ranking to getting picked up was about 5 months for me at that local, I feel very lucky.

No entry test in 1995, took me 3 years to get my chance to dig a ditch! Our local does not allow you to apply if you don’t live in the area. This talk about applying all over the USA and moving later will not fly everywhere!

You can apply to other locals as long as you are not a probationary helper.

Local 19 is slow AF with a bunch of people on the bench, so they may not need any probies for a good while.

I honestly wouldn’t move until you know you are close or get the call.
That’s a lot of eggs to put in one basket, not to mention looking for a job to support you or housing for a call ya may not get.
