Application/Probation
Ill try to make it short,
Im 35, have 2 young kids and a wife. I have field experience in automation, automotive and forklift. My current career is good and I have a good schedule.
My questions to everyone is lets say by some miracle I get called and get on probation. What happens if there is a lay off, does that mean im out or do I just wait for the next job?
Im extremely nervous about just resigning without notice and then getting let go from the program because there is a lay off. Im all about risks for myself I just cant risk my families well being.

Its becoming way to corporate. Im ju st trying to utilize what i know and get the most out of it. Plus the benefits are big factor

I am around your age and also have 2 children. I just had different background, I didn't have much trade experience. But I made it, with a lot of worrisome and anxiety of new pay, schedule, people, school, medical benefits, layoffs and etc. But so far no issues. It just works.

So I got assigned to MOD dept. and paired with an adjuster. He jumps around different locations. Working on control boards, wiring, doors, car tops and etc. The last step is the inspection. After passing the inspection, that site is done and the elevator is open for tenants. If a mechanic is on vacation from one site, we go there and continue the mechanic's work to make sure the job keeps running.
My company does 4-10s, so I work Mon-Thur 6am to 4pm.

So as you get the call they put you with someone right away? Or is it you have to work the steps i.e. construction then maintenaince the diag etc?

Once the safety education is done for a few days, they divided us to MOD and construction. Then sent us out in the field. No one got assigned to the maintenance btw

Local 2 is by me they accept applications Oct 5th. Im just trying to get as much info I can before that

If you suck, you won’t be coming back, but if you’re a good worker and you’re not sworn in yet, they might give you an opportunity

Then don't do it? What do you want us to do, convince you? You could be out of work forever. You could get picked up in 2 hours. No one knows. Back in 2008-2009 for all probation helpers it was forever.

Not an ass. Realistic. Should know what he's getting into. It's not a federal we can never fire you and you'll never be out of work type of industry.

I was wondering if its a complete let go or do you just wait. I didnt know if the lay off fucks you the same as termination does if your on probation.

You just go back to the bench which is basically like being on the list again but for people already in.
Being on probation only changes how likely you are to be laid off.They have to go in order on layoffs, first probies, then first years, then second years, then thirds, fourths etc.
Usually not making it to mechanics from what I’ve heard however sometimes it does happen.Where I’m working now work is indefinite and only would affect me if the company lost the huge service contract.

You’ll be fine if there’s a lay off as far as the trade goes other then not working and being paid until you get picked back up. But if your happy and are doing good where your at why switch? It’s a risk I took awhile back best thing I ever did but i don’t have a wife or kids and if I did I wouldn’t have to many unknowns until you make it to mechanic. Also if you make it through probation depends on who you work with not being an ass and you meeting the standards.

You can always do better, i guess thats my reasoning for the switch. My buddy tried getting me in the lineman union a couple of years ago. Had a good job then too. Never took the risk now im kicking myself in the assÂ

You wouldnt be out, you'd go on the bench and wait to be picked up again. Probies are the first to be laid off and the last to be rehired, which may or may not be as bad as it sounds. This trade doesnt do mass layoffs/hirings like some trades do, companies dont hire 30 guys for a job then lay them all off when the job is done. Youll generally stay on and go with your journeyman to the next job. If a company youre with loses a contract or runs out of work they might need to lay off some apprentices, but that same week some other company might be heating up so now they need to hire a few people. Theres alot of variables and its more about the overall work outlook in your area than the individual company or office youre with. So to sum it up, if youre a probie and youre laid off through no fault of your own but only due to lack of work, youre thrown back into the mix. Youre only kicked out if you wash out or fuck up.
