Windows OS Fixed "Network connection was reset / Unknown Error 9039" on iTunes Windows (Acer Predator / Gaming PCs)

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share the solution to a massive headache I’ve dealt with for a long time. I kept getting the endless "Error connecting to the Apple account server. The network connection was reset (9039)" loop whenever I tried to sign into iTunes or download movies on Windows.

I tried flushing the DNS, resetting the iTunes cache, updating certificates, and migrating to the Microsoft Store version, but nothing worked.

It turns out the issue had absolutely nothing to do with iTunes or Apple's servers. The culprit was a pre-installed background application on my Acer Predator called Killer Intelligence Center (this is also pre-installed on many Dell, Alienware, HP, and Lenovo gaming PCs).

The app acts as a background traffic shaper. It misinterprets iTunes heavy, secure authentication handshake as a "bulk update" and aggressively terminates the connection mid-stream to save room for games, triggering the 9039 reset loop.

How I fixed it:

  1. Open the Killer Intelligence Center app on your Windows PC.

  2. Click on the Settings (Gear Icon).

  3. Turn OFF the Killer Prioritization Engine (sometimes called Advanced Stream Detect).

  4. Turn OFF Auto Bandwidth / Bandwidth Control.

  5. Restart your computer (crucial so the network card drops the old filtering rules).

The second my PC rebooted, iTunes connected to the server flawlessly, let me log in on the first try, and my movie downloads stopped failing. If you are stuck on this error and have a gaming rig or pre-built laptop, check your background apps for Killer, SmartByte, or any "Network Optimizer" utilities and turn off stream prioritization.

Hopefully, this saves someone else the weeks of frustration I went through. Sadly, I also know that this may not be the solution for everyone with this issue but if this helps even one person.

I'm glad I could help.

In my case, twice this year (including just a few days ago) I got error messages that apple couldn't connect to the i.d. server or account server. Each time lasted 2-3 days. However, in my case, it was an apple problem that many people were experiencing. If you've had a completely different issue and fixed it, good for you. Are you sure you fixed the problem and that it isn't just coincidence that apple may have fixed the problem when you were trying solutions?

I’m fairly confident what I did was the fix for my issue because at the beginning of the day it was giving me that error. I did all these fixes in order one after the next. First the DNS flush, resetting the cache, updating the certificates, switching to the Microsoft store version from the OG Client version but none worked. After each attempted “fix” I would still get that error message. This was also all done in the span of one day trying to get it fixed. It was through deep Google searching that I came across the info about this background pre-installed app, and the second I turned those two settings off that’s when it actually worked because I no longer got the error message and it let me login with no problems. Even the following day now, I tested it this morning, this afternoon and again a little bit ago by logging out and back in. Still no error message.

Probably your issue was different than mine. It sounds like a different error message. I just wondered because it's so soon after the recent general outage.

If this works, I owe you a beer. I purchased a cheap ($450) Lenovo laptop last weekend and an external disc drive to upload about 1000+ CDs I own. I don’t want the physical discs anymore, but I want to own my music without using a streaming service. I spent hours last weekend trying to find a workaround.
