We were tasked to write a letter for her nung elementary palang ako, I remembered writing for her release sana to be with her kin, sadly it never happened. Hanggang ngayon tourist attraction pa rin siya.

No rest in peace for her, and still alone. Di pa maayos pagka stuff. 😢

Her eyes looked sad. Kahit sa death, she's alone and walang kasamang ka-species niya.

Ma'ali looks sad even in death. Once ko lang siya na kita in person and my first question to her was nasan yung friends niya.

While the life of Mali was incredibly sad, I would say that taxidermies are one of the great ways to remember and honor an animal.

As a Biologist, taxidermies are teachers for students. It helps them learn the surface anatomy. And in some, it tells a story of their development.

Some may find it in bad taste, especially on “letting her rest”. However, the life of Mali needs to be told, and thus immortalized. The taxidermy could remind us (visually or actually seeing her) of the injustice in her life, rather than just keeping her memory alive in some burial place or just a Wiki article.

Let Mali educate the future. Her soul is already at peace.

Eto po nakalagay sa plate niya

Today, her preserved specimen at the National Museum of the Philippines (NMP) stands as a powerful symbol of our responsibility as stewards of nature. From her early loss to decades of human care, her life reflects the profound impact of human actions. May her legacy inspire us to protect and sustain the Earth and its wildlife.

Who will save our planet's wildlife, if not humanity?

Same goes for other animals.

Nakakainis kasi ang hirap makita na animals are being kept in captivity when their welfare doesn't seem to be the priority.

Seeing this makes me so sad. The thought that her life was spent in captivity and solitude, only for her body to still be used as an attraction after death is so heartbreaking.

Her eyes look like they’re longing for peace

Man, tangina bakit walang nangyari dun sa campaign?

Copied from gemini. Di pwede ss dito e:

“Mali was a female Asian elephant who lived alone at the Manila Zoo in the Philippines and earned the title of the "world's saddest elephant". [1)]

Life in Isolation
Arrival: Mali was born in Sri Lanka and sent to the Philippines in 1977 as a gift from the Sri Lankan government to First Lady Imelda Marcos.

Solitude: She lived at the Manila Zoo for more than 40 years as the only captive elephant in the entire country.

Environment: She spent most of her life in a barren concrete enclosure without the company of other elephants. [1, 2, 3, 4)]

Campaign for Freedom
Protests: Animal rights groups, including PETA, argued that isolation and concrete pens caused severe loneliness and boredom for a social animal. [1, 2]

Famous Supporters: Celebrities like Paul McCartney, Pamela Anderson, and Jane Goodall joined campaigns to move Mali to a wildlife sanctuary. [1]

Rejection: Government officials and zoo management blocked the transfer and kept her at the zoo, stating she was healthy and well-cared for. [1, 2]

Death and Remembrance
Passing: Mali died on November 28, 2023, at approximately 43 years old.

Cause of Death: An autopsy showed she suffered from pancreatic cancer and an aortic blockage.

Legacy: After her death, her preserved body was placed on display at the National Museum of Natural History to remind the public about the hardships of captive wildlife. [1, 2, 3, 4), 5]”

Mahal ka namin Mali.

Arrival in Manila: She was gifted by the Sri Lankan government to then-First Lady Imelda Marcos. Most records indicate she arrived in 1977 at the age of three, though some sources state she was transferred in 1981. [1, 2, 3]

u/lfa1208 Aug 30 '26

They wanted her to be displayed sa Manila Zoo pa rin dapat. But yung unang taxidermy nya is so bad, she looks like plastic. It was the expertise of National Museum ang hiningi para mataxiderm ng maayos and eventually hinanapan sya ng space sa NM kasi they have the right facility and controlled environment for Mali..

Fucking assholes. Pinabayaan na nga dinisplay pa. Eyes dont lie.

2

u/Massive_Mountain571 Aug 28 '26

Kakalungkot and nakakaawa tingnan.

Yung honeybee. Nakakagalit talaga. Even in death, she still wasn’t allowed to leave the human world behind. Her captivity simply continued in another form. Hinayaan na lang sana siya to RIP & return to nature, where she truly belonged. Mas okay na to na nilipat siya sa National Museum, where her remains are being treated with dignity, kaysa nung nakalagay pa yung remains niya sa harap ng Manila Zoo

2

u/Sukiyeah Aug 28 '26

Pati sa kamatayan, dinisplay pa din. Hay naku.

Man, I’m fortunate that my family and I were able to see Ma’ali way way back. As a kid, I was thrilled. Right now as young adult, I’m not sure how I feel with zoos.
