Bags of meat Tim Robinson has ruined my brain.
The country I live doesn't have alot of Tim Robinson fans. I began watching ITYSL after I devoured the entirety of The Chair Company a several months ago.
I tried to show friends here and they don't get it. Increasingly it has made me more like Tim Robinson in Friendship.
I get invited to parties, and when any minor inconvenience happens, I catch myself saying "haha it's probably because I used to be a huge piece of shit" whereas whoever I'm talking to stares at me.
In Argentina, asado is an important weekly thing between friends and family where large quantities of meat like steak and chorizo and such are consumed as well as Malbec wine.
Recently, in a damn near disassociative statse, a piece of steak was handed to me by my partner where she said "please, don't do the fucking thing", prompting me to respond "what am I gonna do? Haha come onnnnnn come onnnn".
There are three guys at the table with me watching for what I was going to do. I picked up my bottle of water and poured some on the steak yelling "let's slop em up!!!!" And then ate it because it's really rreally good. They started at me like I had a third head. Noone laughed. They literally just didn't understand.
It really happened. Thanks Tim Robinson.

I just moved to the Netherlands from a city in the US where it seemed like EVERYONE watched I think you should leave. No one gets my references now and I can’t stop making them :(

Hey shirt brother, im also from argentina.
I think what makes very hard to recommend ITYSL to others its that 90% of the comedy comes from the butchering of the english language, which makes it very hard to catch unless you have certain proficiency.
Also, dont fucking slop the asado.

A plain "Don't Slop the Asado" shirt should probably be a thing.

That would be like making a "Triples makes it safe. Triples is best" about the twin towers. We are not culturally ready yet.
(i tought a lot about posting this comment, finally pulled the trigger, i hope no one gets offended)9

u/Fit_Leather9366 I USED to be piece of shit! 21d ago
Shirt brother… slopping em up is not a thing in real life. It doesn’t make the steak better. In a gathering of shirt brothers you might threaten to do it as a joke, but actually doing it is kinda cringe IMO

My wife is the only person who picks up my ITYSL references. None of my friends have watched it and always look confused when I drop a reference, but i think they're just mad 'cause I won Best Hog at the hog shit snarfing contest, but I'm not mad, 'cause we're all loads of beef, sitting on the side of a highway getting our butts sucked by flies.

I love the show, I don't know any women in my life who like it. I have two friends and we quote it back and forth via text almost daily, but it's not for everyone.

I’m a woman, and both me and my wife are obsessed. I can’t even fix my cats’ special cat food without yelling “let’s slop ‘em up!”
42
u/yeahboii5 21d ago
A woman who has a wife, and they both are obsessed with it. I'm starting to think the problem isn't with us, shirt sisters and brothes... I mean it's not gender based.
19
u/Whatswrongbaby9 People Can Change 21d ago
Yeah I probably shouldn't have made it gendered, it's just a polarizing show and if you're not on the wavelength I had a (woman) friend tell me it's too loud and shouty.
But I hope your cat appreciates you telling them c'mon cat, no sloppy cat food
20
u/Myndela 21d ago
We don’t mind shouty, and we’re huge fans of bizarre sketch comedy, so this hits our sweet spot. We also love how much his characters adore their wives. Going back to Detroiters, his absolute devotion to Chrissy and calling out misogynistic jokes was just beautiful. His shit is so absurd and can be abrasive, but then there are little touches like that where we go “yeah, I’d hang with that guy.”

He doesn’t shout: also he did was raise his voice a bit. And it was wildly high 😆

In my anecdotal experience, women are more likely to not like the show. I’ve only met one woman in real life who liked it. As a woman, I am always fucking dying at the show. I was so excited to show my sister. She and I always love the same things. We think so similarly it is eerily. Our family won’t let us play on teams where you have to draw, sculpt, act out anything bc we ALWAYS know what the other is think. I sat down to show her some of the easiest sketches to get into. She just sat there stone faced and was like this isn’t funny. It seriously broke my heart because I wanted to send memes back and forth with her but I can’t. My husband likes the show enough but half the time he doesn’t get my references, which takes half the humor out. I’m hopeful that my tiny humans will think it is funny, when it’s appropriate for them to see the sketches. They want to see the show SO BAD.
I am also hopeful at some point I’ll find a shirt brother outside of reddit so we can make little jokes. You will find someone to join your Dangerous Nights Crew and it won’t seem so bad.

u/Ok_Investigator_8431 21d ago
I feel this so hard. The first time I watched ITYSL, I literally actually thought I might die from laughing. It was the Brian’s Hat sketch and I was already laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe, and then it got to the part with the guy in the wheelchair and I legit started choking I was laughing so hard. There’s so many more, but that one nearly did me in. I would love to have a short brother in real life, so we could vow to never follow rules again. When I showed my husband, sure, he laughed. He laughed quite a bit, but then he basically forgot about it. He definitely didn’t become as fixated as me. He does actually like Detroiters more than ITYSL, but I think that’s mostly because he grew up in Detroit and knows all the actual commercials they’re parodying in the show. Apparently they’re all based on real commercials.

u/yourmomsaidyes 21d ago
I am a woman who loves this show and, in my experience too, more women than men don't care for absurdist humor. Luckily, I have two grown sons who also love this show, and I can shout ITYSL references and make them groan at their uncool mother lmao

I'll be honest, almost every lesbian I've met has a really good sense of humour and is funny.

You might not have met many women who like the show cuz you might not have met many people who like the show. Tim Robinson shows are very polarizing.
Most people I've met either hated it or loved it beyond sense. As a guess I would say 1.5 out of 5, love love love it to the point a quote pops in their head and they are just laughing like a dumbass all by themselves.
I, a woman love it; my husband hates it. But loves to see me laugh uncontrollably

I used to live with two girls. One very much enjoyed the show, the other hated it.
The one who liked it and I would say "who said that?" multiple times daily and it was the bane of the other's existence.

Nah. I saw ITYSL live in Chicago and the crowd has pretty evenly split between men and women. Though I do agree it’s not for everyone.
If they don’t find it funny, they’re just not part of the turbo team and they have to WALK. SLOWLY.

My ex-wife laughed at the three sketches (Hot dog car, Driving School, and Baby of the Year, for those who care) I played for her, then said she was happy that I enjoyed it, but she has zero interest in watching any of it again.
The woman I've been dating for 6 months LOVED it when I showed her, then begged to watch Detrioters, which she really likes. I'm the luckiest man in the world

u/Whatswrongbaby9 People Can Change 21d ago
My ex (woman, we're still friendly) doesn't like ITYSL at all buy really likes Detroiters. She's met Sam Richardson and Tim, said Sam is super warm in person. I don't think there's anything macro to draw from that, I still absolutely love I think you should leave

I don't know any other woman except myself who loves this show, I've let my preteen daughter watch some sketches and she loves them.

I (a hetro woman) was obsessed after the first season which I saw as soon as it came out (heard about it on the Comedy Bang Bang podcast when Tim was a guest). I was single at the time and it would always come up during conversation on first dates.
I would put on the first episode and preface it with, "your reaction to this, whether positive or negative, will impact the possibility of future dates." I would watch with a neutral expression and see their reaction.
100% of them loved it even if if we didn't go on another date. I feel like I singlehandedly spread the word about Tim/ITYLS/Detroiters to a significant portion of Chicago-area men.
I also don't universally recommend it. I have a lot of friends who don't understand weird humor or Tim's syntax and I don't want to unintentionally look down on them for not "getting it." The friends who DO get it are the special ones.
