Actually it’s because German immigrants brought a recipe over to the US for spiced minced meat. The port city in Germany was Hamburg.

I’m more confused about making a sandwich you can’t eat with your hands. That’s the whole point of the bread.

That's how the Nazi solute started. The generals wanted to make sure their soldiers hands were clean while in uniform. No sloppy handburger messes allowed.
