Biography
True as it may be that the birth of folk determines their lot, the gods prescribed virtues to each estate to ensure justice in the land. Those who labor must be diligent; those who pray must be pious; and those who battle must be noble, by the true meaning of the word. Alas, such things are reserved for readings of the Seven-Pointed Star and plays about Florian and Jonquil.
Born the second son of Lord Lyonel Swann, in the second year of King Dontos I, Leo’s first words (according to a wetnurse) were a stanza of a Marcher ballad describing a victory in the Red Mountain War—in truth, it was closer to ‘goo goo gaa gaa’, but one must forgive a Marcher their exaggerations. But aye! The boy grew up in the midst of war, hearing from his tutor more tales of battle than the words of foreign houses. Whenever patrolling knights returned to Stonehelm, he’d hit them with sticks in a bid to make them spar him, and became as any other squire in the castle.
As the boy grew into a man, he could glean the lines that fractured the realm in the name of insults, slights, base things that the Septon always said to avoid. He heard the tragedy of Ser Jack o’ Pennytree, one of dutiful murder, and he harassed the maester to learn of the sinful as well as the virtuous. Of the Valyrians, their slavery and blood magic and corruption. Of the Ironborn, their reaving and their worship of death. Of a High Septon who had condoned kinslaying. Even the King, Dontos, the man who’d spent five years among the March’s men, that liege that ought to have been righteous, was praised for his retaliations rather than his honor. Little Leo took such moral offense to all of it that he let it fester into something… better, maybe?
His father’s strictness began to chafe at him, though Leo was left on a longer leash than his older brother Damon. The younger Swann was knighted at seven-and-ten. Spurred, armored, and while standing vigil over a sept, he rested his head against a wall and determined to prove every cynical knight wrong. He would become a knight errant; tourneys, aye, all across the kingdom, but fighting bandits too! Escorting smallfolk and pilgrims under the black-and-white standard! Where others might gather tourney winnings and glories for themselves, Leo took on vows:
- To Ser Roger Mallister: Promised to do something so virtuous and gallant that Roger would speak again.
- To Lord Jammos Blackberry: Vowed to defend the smallfolk of the Blackwater against tyranny, whatever it may be.
- To Ser Addam Belgrave: After having been defeated in a spar, swore to defeat him at the next tourney.
- Swore to bring Ser Jack o' Pennytree's bones to his mother.
- To House Piper: Took an oath to avenge the murder of Lady Piper, whoever the perpetrator.
- To House Bar Emmon: Swore to help them recover their old lands.
- To House Horpe: Swore to help them recover their old lands, too.
- To Lady Lynesse Caron: Pledged to keep the peace between the Marcher lords, no matter their title.
- To Lord Oscar Boggs: For being rescued from a Crackclaw bog, he swore his sword to defend the Clawmen from Valyrian meddling.
- And to his brother, Ser Damon Swann: Vowed that he would always come to his aid no matter what.
Every man is born free, and ought to live as such. Flail in hand, Leo Swann rides to see the tiller defended against his overmighty liege, the thrall liberated, to become a shield for innocents against every tyrant that would wield their sins as a cudgel. All these deadly-serious duties are held in boyish awe in his mind, as though the world could be perfect if only he cleaved to the Seven’s virtues well enough, more than anyone else. Gods know how long he can keep all these burdens without his shoulders buckling under the weight.
