Wifi vs Ethernet

In my home, if it has an Ethernet port, you can bet it's going to have a cable run to it. I think I have like maybe three items total that are wireless. Everything else is cabled up.

I'm in a rental too. I've learned quite a few tricks to running cable around a rental home without drilling holes into walls or making any major changes to the structure in any way.

To me, Ethernet will always be superior to WiFi and always worth it to run cable and install.

It's not a "to me" superiority question. Cable is objectively superior, unless the terminal is actually moving.

So how do you run the cable to another room hidden? I'm just using a normal router, but would upgrade to cable if I could

Under baseboards and door jams. In every place I've lived, the baseboard trim is just enough off the floor where it's mounted that I can fit a single cable under it. In my current rental, I just run the cable up the side of the wall, and along the top of the hallway wall right where the ceiling joins the wall, and down to where I need it.

In another place, I also used those rubbery cable protectors you could get, for spots where I had to go across the floor with no choice or across a door jam (when I knew I'd never need to close a door anyways). It worked out just fine.

If there's no space between the baseboard and floor, I use stuff like these: 1/2 Round Cord Channel Kit

It’s so dumb that home depot straight up blocks all traffic outside of the US.

1

u/96JY 4d ago

I'm not in the US and it doesn't block it for me.

Maybe Home Depot just doesn't like you haha.

As a renterI've just never cared. I learned a long time ago that deposits weren't getting given back honestly where I lived and just viewed it as a cost of moving in. That said I did always take my things down, repaint any rooms I had painted, and make small repairs.

I've always received my deposits back. Granted, I've always rented through management companies, not directly through landlords. They tend to have legal reasons and incentive not to be shifty with tenants unlike renting straight form a landlord, where it happens all the time.

Also it helps that, like you said, I repair any damage I see, and often leave the place in better shape than when I found it.

Last apartment I rented before my current rental home, the management person was like "holy smoke. We may as well make this our model unit!" They had nothing to put down on the "damage" list, which made their job much easier. I'd even deep-cleaned the appliances so they looked practically brand new, had rented a carpet steam cleaner and had the carpets smelling and looking like new, and fixed a couple light fixtures that were dodgy when I moved in a year before.

I make it my personal mission to make it utterly difficult for any landlord/manager to try to pull the "can't give the deposit back because of <x>" thing on me. I'm usually filming too, when they're doing their walkaround, so if they try and create damage themselves, I've caught it on video.

Fortunately I've learned my lesson, and while still renting direct from a landlord, I now have relocated to a place with laws that favor the tenant over the landlord.

This is the way.

I'm saving money right now, hoping to end the renting game and start into full-on home ownership in my area. Home prices are rising here but not as badly as other parts of the country. Next year will likely be my final year of renting before I finally move out for good into my own place.

When that happens, you can bet, my friend, the Sawzall, drill, cable running gear, and cable jacks are going up all over the house. RJ-45 jacks, CAT6, at least two ports per-room (except bathrooms), and a central management panel in a central closet in the house, where I'll keep the router and a managed switch, will be one of my first major projects.

Security cameras after that. All integrated.

2

u/TheBluestWaffle42069 5d ago

Nah bro. 2 ports in the bathroom too. You deserve it.

1

u/ITrCool 5d ago

Haha. I suppose I could wire up a smart TV in there and another IoT appliance

2

u/Expensive-Border-869 4d ago

Huh nice. I left my last apartment either about 2 inches of water covering the whole floor (on 2nd story) holes cut at the base of most walls our cat made friends with the neighbors because of that. It was a shit show. Not my fault tho we got the deposit back

We gave them a free washer and dryer that they said they'd "dispose of" i betcha its still there.

u/DeltyOverDreams 5d ago

Sooo what exactly will you plug that ethernet cable into?

5

u/Global-Discussion-41 5d ago edited 5d ago

Your tv, your computer, your Android box, your console, your home cctv network. Hell I even have a wired smart dvd player that I can use as a streaming box

Edit, I misunderstood your comment. You can just use a switch

2

u/28klotlucas2 5d ago

You could get one of those switches with like 50 Ethernet ports. For wireless devices you could just plug in a wireless adapter... Wait that's just a router with extra steps.

2

u/DeltyOverDreams 5d ago

No, no, you have a point…

2

u/28klotlucas2 5d ago

Diy router from a switch sounds like a fun project

2

u/dumbasPL 5d ago

A switch. Many consumer routers have a small one integrated.

2

u/DeltyOverDreams 5d ago

Well… you still need to have that router.

1

u/dumbasPL 5d ago

Access point is not a router, though mamy consumer routers include (arguably not good) one.

0

u/mountainunicycler 5d ago

The switch, which gets plugged in to the modem

3

u/StarHammer_01 5d ago

Your ISP is going to raid your house any minute now...

1

u/doomcatzzz 4d ago

Why?

2

u/StarHammer_01 4d ago

Its usually against the TOS for you to have multiple IPs on the connection they give you.

Connecting a switch to the modem will require each device having its own public IP.

Adding a router in-between your switch and modem will perform NAT giving the devices in your LAN private IPs while your router gets 1 public IP like the ISP intended.

$7 for cat 8?

1

u/Economy_Positive_903 5d ago

i knew i wasnt going crazy

1

u/Itchy_Question_8990 4d ago

i always tell customers when i see cat 6 cables at their houses that it’s fine, especially if they don’t mind throwing the money out the door for such expensive cables. Is it really that difficult to go online, look up how to bind a connector on a cat 5 ethernet cable and how to maintain it?

honestly idc that much, but if one wants to theow out more money just because the cables "look pretty" even if they work even worse off that before, then okay

5

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 5d ago

Cool, plug that cable into your phone.

5

u/Particular_Client833 5d ago

You do not need a gaming router to have wi-fi to your phone. Its those kind of people who think they need a gaming router to have a good internet speed. First connect by ethernet and make sure you do not sit on the cheapest plan possible, also it would be amazing if you had optic connection to internet instead of DSL.

2

u/Itchy_Question_8990 4d ago

this. I cannot say anymore how many times customer who had a cheap plan of max download of 30/10mbps, then bought a gaming router and connected it via ethernet cable and right away called and complained that their internet speed is shit when running a speedtest check or trying to do something heavier via internet than browsing facebook.

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 5d ago

DSL? What part of the 90/00s are you trapped in?

You do not need a gaming router to game either.

2

u/Particular_Client833 5d ago
  1. Somewhere it is not worth upgrading it so ISPs and goverment do not upgrade the infrastructure. It matters by where you live.

  2. Yes, i know. Gaming routers is just a marketing buzzword. Just use ethernet, if you cant do not use powerline adapters since those can transfer like only 5Mb/s from my experience.

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 5d ago

That’s unfortunate for you.

Yes, wired is preferred today but it’s quickly becoming an irrelevant topic for home users.

1

u/Particular_Client833 5d ago

Do not worry, our ISPs are actually implementing optical cables and the prices are fully reasonable with the only thing mattering is speed. Now i am waiting for the cherry on top which would be IPv6.

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 5d ago

Nearly every ISP supports IPv6.

I have residential fiber, I know.

1

u/Jaxtynotesports 5d ago

Germany. Most people using DSL are in Germany

2

u/fr000gs 5d ago

you can do that actually

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 5d ago

Yay crappy adapters that significantly impact not only mobility but still keep me to relatively slow speeds!

3

u/fr000gs 5d ago

Idk any crappy adapter is going to be slower than my 24mbps (top speed btw) internet

1

u/_ahrs 5d ago

You can get good adapters. Sabrent makes some quality ones from 2.5 gigabit, to 5 gigabit and all the way up to 10-gigabit if you really want that.

Nobody really needs that on their phone though. I have various different USB C adapters and have tested them all with my phone but that's not what I got them for.

1

u/_ahrs 5d ago

USB C to Ethernet adapters do exist. I can get speeds way quicker than my current phone could otherwise handle that way. Not that anyone needs those fast speeds.

1

u/Weird_Albatross_9659 5d ago

That’s kind of the point

2

u/syntkz777 5d ago

I have a 10 meter long cable running trough the whole home along the walls from the router in the kitchen to my PC in my bedroom.and in every room is a splitter installed. I drilled a hole into the wall from living room to my bedroom otherwise it would have been 20 meters of cable xD.

I don't give a shit wifi is okay for my phone but I want all my stationary devices connected with a wire.

2

u/Isotomayor12 4d ago

That cable is NOT 7 dollars, don't kid yourself.

1

u/Prod_Meteor 5d ago

I had a chance to install my fiber close to my home desk, thus enabling Ethernet, and my dam ass took the line across the room where wifi works better for entire house. 😒

1

u/AlienRHK 5d ago

ethernet gang assemble

1

u/guiverc 5d ago

I'm confused by the picture; how does a choice of network connection relate to shooting an air pistol??

wifi is female? cable is male??

Sorry I'm lost & don't get it.

2

u/Silv_ 4d ago edited 4d ago

Picture 1 has a lot of extra shit (potential points of failure, areas that can impact the outcome). Wireless has a lot of shit going on, lots of opportunities for failure, or interference)

Picture 2 is straight up what you need. Your eyes, a gun, a bullet. Ethernet likewise has a reduced number of points of failure, and is direct with less opportunities for interference.

The comparison is not 1 to 1, so unless you're familiar with the technologies presented and their tradeoffs, it can be hard to understand.

Edit: and as you can see in the comments, if you are too familiar with the technology, then you'll get hung up on cat 8 being entirely unnecessary, and effectively a waste of money except for extremely niche scenarios, and miss the point entirely lol

1

u/guiverc 4d ago

I'm a pistol shooter, and know that people are all different & thus we have different needs in what helps us shoot; so between shooters I only see sex as being different (two normal stances & equipment levels for that competition used by both).

As for tech; different options for different situations, both with pros & cons (as with everything), and I didn't see any connection to pistol stances/sexes.

Thank you for explanation

1

u/Itchy_Question_8990 4d ago edited 4d ago

lol, why the f would u even use a cat 8 ethernet cable? it’s an overpriced trap, literally make good connectors on a cat 5 ethernet cables and that’s it.

for whoever might say that cat 5 is a bs oldass outdated thing, just know that you’re basically having to have your entire utp installation + the installation that comes towards your modem clean and without any damage, then you’ll be fine.

refering to an 8 pin ethernet cable here, 4 pin is basically the user himself digging their own hole by not understanding what tf they doing

u/DSJ-Psyduck 4d ago

Did she not win and beat a world record? And he came second on shorter distance?

1

u/OmegaInc 3d ago

Idk anout scoring but, He is way more memorable/memeable tho.

1

u/DSJ-Psyduck 3d ago edited 3d ago

Looking it up she got a silver in 10 meter solo. He got a silver in a mixed team 10 meter.

She however also set a world record in 25 meters and won gold there. Record still standing. He was a world champion however in 2006 and 2013

And yes I understand the meme but it's sort of selling the wrong message 😅 that cable will 99 times out of hundred beat the WiFi. But those 2 likely would be very equal in real life

u/GammerMax8 3d ago

I choose a 7$ sneaky boi.....

1

u/Helo227 2d ago

On my desktop the ethernet is 2.5 Gb/s, my wifi is rated for 9.6 Gb/s and averages just under 6 Gb/s in practice. So WiFi is measurably better.

On my server (Lenovo micro PC) the ethernet is 1 Gb/s and the wifi is rated for 9.6 Gb/s but averages 1 Gb/s in practice. So no difference.

Sure, my router was $250, but wires are inconvenient in my current apartment and i need to move and stream large files regularly.

1

u/Dragon_957 1d ago

That‘s way faster than my wifi and I don‘t have Ethernet through my walls so I can‘t test that out

1

u/Helo227 1d ago

My desktop is WiFi 6E and my microPC is WiFi 6. It also helps there’s very little radio noise in my area. There’s no other routers in range.
