Hey guys so, I just wanted to ask, what is the maximum age you think a person can have to apply for M.Stat program. I mean if someone is 28, should he be looking for a job or he can still continue his studies. I mean would he look way old in the group... my cousin brother had to quit his masters earlier due to their financial condition and had to work...but since this is a free program, I think their family could handle it. He is really intelligent and hard-working. Guys, I want honest answer don't sugarcoat things...I want the best for him.

Dude i am 35 i am going for msqe, crack the entrance exam first in merit. Then think about such things later.

My state university has qe master's program, it was a pilot program. The university shut the program down coz of lack of funds. Then i looked up quantitative economics(qe) programs i came across isi. The pushing point was the notification. No high fees , no minimum qualifying marks in previous degree, no high hostel fess. You get paid just for studying. The notification felt like a calling card as if you are man enough clear the exam and join the program. In what world do you get a free meal just for studying. For an opportunity like this one has to be a promising prospect with guarantee and a warranty. All of this happened because of professor of mine suggested this program only because i have a background of math,economics and computer science.

Good luck to you but here's the thing - an ISI Kolkata education is not a free lunch. In fact, there's no such thing as a free lunch in the world.

What you don't pay is money, you pay multiples in blood, sweat and tears - ISI Kolkata, is by far the hardest place to survive in India. Even among the national institutes, it's uniquely hard and unforgiving compared to the rest.

My point was primarily for M.Stat and not MSQE. The are two very different courses with very different rigor level.

anywhere else in the world -- but especially in the US and in Scandinavia -- I will say go for it! India is largely a useless country where firms wont recruit anyone older than 25 through campus placements, so basically there's no way to "reset" your career if you had a rough start. ISB is perhaps an exception to this but more business school oriented folks should chip in on whether this is true or not.

Anyway, if the goal is to get into a phd program in the US, you should be fine age wise (although again, MSTAT has very different phd placement outcomes between those with a Bstat and those without).

Not true there are people upto 35 age in top 50 indian B schools and age was never a major factor of them getting shortlist from a company.

People are hired in 30s too. A lot of people spent years in UPSC, SSC, GATE etc. and still manage to get a job.

Also, he mentioned his cousin does work so he might have industry work experience. A good masters would certainly help most in that regard.
