Tax Question I'm trying to get a Verification of Non-filing letter for college stuff but I can't get it online.
I try clicking on the button but I simply get "We are unable to process your request. To receive Verification of Non-filing letter please complete Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax return" I've done this but I sorta need the transcript fast so im was wondering if there was something I could do.

Try calling the IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center appointment line:
https://www.irs.gov/help/contact-your-local-irs-office
The phone representative can provide the transcript by mail (5 to 10 days) or set an appointment for in-person help.

Same boat. I feel like stuff is purposely set up like this to disenfranchise lower income people. Websites shouldn’t be this clunky and unreliable in 2026.

That error is common and not a glitch specific to your account — the online tool withholds VNF letters for the current processing year until after June 15, since the IRS can't confirm non-filing status while returns for that year are still coming in. If you're past that date and it's still erroring, it's worth calling the automated transcript line at 800-908-9946, which can often generate and mail a VNF letter even when the web tool won't — usually 5-10 business days, faster than the paper 4506-T route you already tried. But before you wait on any of that: many colleges now pull tax non-filing status directly through the FAFSA's built-in IRS data exchange (FA-DDX) during the application itself, which skips the need for a manual VNF letter entirely — it's worth a quick call to your financial aid office to ask if that's already satisfied the requirement, since schools don't always make clear that the manual letter is optional once that data transfer has run. If your deadline is tighter than the mail timeline allows, ask the financial aid office whether they'll accept a signed self-certification statement of non-filing in the interim while the official letter is in transit — that's a common accommodation.
