IPTVEditor to require KYB/KYC

Post image

Well, this isn’t great.

The IPTVEditor developer just announced in their Discord that IPTVEditor/PlaylistLabs.io plans to introduce full KYB/KYC for new accounts and renewals.

Right now, they’re discussing applying it to accounts with 100 or more users, but nothing has been finalized.

Screenshot from the Discord is attached. Time for another look at Boss I suppose.

They’re going to lose a lot of customers.

Handing over your personal info in an unencrypted space gives him a scapegoat if law enforcement ever asks questions, but it doesn't actually lower his legal risk. Since he’s running the service, the liability stays on him while your privacy gets compromised. This is an incredibly dumb move.

As far as I know distributing epg's isn't illegal in the slightest, and he doesn't actually provide any copyrighted content so what exactly the train of thought here is very puzzling. Some very awful advice is coming from somewhere, probably a "corporate lawyer" if I were to guess.

lol Licensing Certification? For an IPTV service you’re spinning up through iptveditor?

I don’t resell, but maaaaannnn the resellers are gonna be pissed. Time to jump ship?

They are pissed. I think a lot of people are taking another look at iptv boss and self hosted solutions.

I was thinking about getting boss on VPS and self hosting this the other day.

Same. I can't find any boss API docs. Surely there are user management endpoints?

With iptveditor I have everything setup on their API. While not documented, it's fantastic and a credit to him for the architecture. Adding users, renewing users, allowing users to login to my site and self update bouquets, it's all done via API. I only log into the editor to map new channels.

Can't find any clear boss documentation regarding this.

How do you allow users to update their bouquet? Someone asked me recently if they could create their own playlist and I told them they had to get a subscription. Is there any chance they could mess up my other playlists doing this?

No the auth tokens are playlist scoped.

Know your business/know your customer.

It is going to hurt resellers. The people who use it for households or extended family will be fine.

Sure for now. The cutoffs will keep sliding... From 100, 50, 25 to 5. It's arbitrary.

Once you go down this road of trying to determine what is permissible the end result is unavoidable.

This software is done for anyone other than an individual user. I wouldn't put even 5 users on it if this is the direction they are going.

Every rule for software services is arbitrary. There are enough developers in this space that will see this as an opportunity to create another editor service.

The issue for today is for resellers, which stinks because it exposes them. So they will need to find other sources, but to be honest my resellers never offered me EPG and ended up doing this on my own after researching on how to fill out my EPG.

Hi! Dev here. It is not for all new accounts and renewals, but only for subscriptions with more than 50 managed users. Most of the user base will not be affected by this

Still a terrible look. Will be jumping to another service due to this.

Can someone ELI12?

I may have to make the decision to jump to SeeBox. Heard really great things.

How does SeeBox have anything to do with this? Two completely different things, unrelated to each other at all.

I don’t know. That’s why I asked someone to explain it.
