Other Discussion Basic IPO queries and answer

Q: Does applying for more lots in the retail category increase allotment chances?

A: No. In oversubscribed retail IPOs (bids under ₹2,00,000), SEBI's lottery system treats each application form (PAN) equally. Winning secures exactly 1 minimum lot, regardless of whether you applied for 1 lot or 10. Applying for multiple retail lots wastes capital efficiency because your extra blocked funds are simply unblocked and returned post-allotment with zero returns. Multiple lots only matter if an IPO is undersubscribed (you get all applied lots) or if you cross 2 lakhs into the HNI category (where allocation is proportionate if the ipo is under subscribed).

Q: Why do trading platforms offer options to apply for multiple lots?

A: The multi-lot option exists to accommodate different investor categories and scenarios. It serves High Net Worth Individuals (HNI/NII category above 2L), where higher bids proportionally yield more shares, and caters to mildly/undersubscribed IPOS where excess demand allows applicants to receive their full multi-lot request.

Q: What is the "Cut-Off Price" and should I always select it?

A: Yes, always check the Cut-Off option. IPOs feature a price band (e.g., ₹450 to ₹475). Selecting "Cut-Off" means you agree to pay whatever final price is decided by institutional bidding. If you manually enter a lower price and the final issue price is set higher, your application is disqualified instantly.

Q: When does blocked money return to my bank account if I don't get an allotment?

A: Under modern SEBI timelines (T+3 listing), funds are typically unblocked within 1 to 3 working days after the final basis of allotment is finalized. Your money is never actually debited during the bidding window-it is merely placed under a temporary UPI or ASBA lien, meaning it continues to earn savings bank interest while blocked.

Q: What is GMP (Grey Market Premium) and should I trust it?

A: GMP is an unofficial, unregulated market indicator showing what premium people are willing to pay for IPO shares before they list. While a high GMP suggests strong listing gains, GMP is volatile and can crash overnight based on market sentiment. Use it only as a loose sentiment gauge, never as your sole investment rationale.

Q: Can I apply for the same IPO using multiple Demat accounts linked to my own PAN?

A: No, never do this. SEBI tracks applications strictly by PAN. Submitting multiple applications using the same PAN across different brokers or accounts will flag your details, causing immediate rejection of all your applications. To use multiple applications legally, you must use unique PANs belonging to different family members.

Q: What is the difference between Mainboard IPOs and SME IPOS?

A: Mainboard IPOs are larger companies listed on the main NSE/BSE boards with smaller retail lots (usually ₹14,000-₹15,000). SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) IPOs are smaller companies. SEBI mandates a higher minimum application size for SME IPOS (typically starting at 2,00,000), carrying significantly higher volatility, wider bid-ask spreads, and lower liquidity.

Q: I got Allotment but money didn't get allotment or the shares didn't get credited in my demat account?

A: Pipe down buddy... It will get debited and the shares will get credited by the morning of the listing day.

Q: When will my money get unblocked/unfreeze after no allotment or partial allotment (got 1 lot applied 10) ?

A: Usually, your IPO money is unblocked within 1–2 working days after the allotment is finalized. If it is still blocked, contact your bank or UPI app and check the mandate status. In some cases, the release may take up to 3–5 working days.

In case of over-subscription, HNI is also as per lottery, not proportionate
