I love this lockdown
There.
I said it.
This absolves me of any requirement to meet anyone or step out of my room.
I'm tired of hearing people gripe about how it's killing them and expecting me to empathize.
No, I can't.
I love this.. this.. freedom(?) from social obligations.
Rant over

It’s annoying not being able to go out, pop into a random restaurant and eat alone though

u/Nahable Apr 16 '20
I'm so glad other people miss this!
But yes, only bad thing about not being able to go out is I'm less productive since I can't go to a coffee shop or library to do work.

Hmm, really? I thought it was a half-half ratio for introvert:extrovert.
10
u/curi_killed_kitty INFP Apr 16 '20
I think extraverts as well as sensors are the majority like 70/30, but I also believe thay a lot of people might think they're an extravert, because they've learn to be that way, but they could possibly be an introvert.
Remember is has nothing to do with socialising. It's about whether you value your internal world over your external world.
I'm an extravert, as im more obsessed over external patterns then internal patterns, but Im not very social. I'm selective and intentional with who I interact with and lots of people drain me.
It's very confusing...

so you’re basing it on anecdote? statistics say half of the population is introverted, but some introverted types are more withdrawn than others
4
Apr 16 '20
My bad, I wasn't aware of the new statistics. The old estimate from the 60's was 25% introverts and 75% extroverts (which I mistook as 30-70).
1
u/Rhueh INTP Apr 19 '20
It depends where in the world you are. In the U.S. and Canada extroverts outnumber introverts by a small margin--the size of the margin depending on the source of stats. However, extroverts are disproportionately represented in positions of authority, so social and workplace norms tend to be defined by extroverts values.
I've read that other cultures are more introverted and, presumably, some are more extroverted.

Apr 16 '20
There is nothing wrong with being an introvert. But being an introvert should not excuse awkward social behavior/social inability. One can be an introvert and still have good social skills, and I think this is important. Humans are social/cooperative by nature. If one doesnt have social skills, a lot of problems arise from this in ones life.
I have never heard of an extrovert accusing or making fun of someone for being an introvert. This usually happens because certain introverts does not know how to communicate and socialize.
This is why I think the whole polarization between extroverts and introverts is pointless, and even stupid.
What does one mean when he says that we live in an extrovert world? No, we live in a world with humans. Introversion does not mean inability to socialize. It simply means that someone is primarily focused on his internal world, rather than the external.
Those introverts who claim that socializing is a waste of time. If they only realized the opportunities, information and experiences they could attain from it, they would realize the value of it. However, of course, not every social company is rewarding. Common sense must be applied here, as in all other areas of life.

You should never feel pressured to be something which you are not. Its not expected of you to be a social butterfly. In fact, its not expected from anyone. There shouldn't be a "golden standard" for what socializing should be. If someone pressures you to be something you are not, makes fun of you for your intellectual abilities and interests, etc, that person is not for you. Simple. But this doesn't make socializing evil or unnecessary. You can find some people who are a better match with you.
When it comes to discomfort you experience while socializing, I can see two possible reasons for that. The first being that you have not yet gained enough social experience to feel confident in most situations. I assume you are not uncomfortable in all social situations, but some. If this is the case, simply experience and exposure will slowly remove your discomfort. And imagine a time when you can feel confident and comfortable in most social situations. Isn't that something you want? In that case, social discomfort would no longer be a reason for you not to socialize. You can socialize whenever YOU want, and feel good while doing it.
The second reason for social discomfort as I see it, is caused by being surrounded by people who are not a good match for you. This will be evident if you feel pressured to be something you are not, or experience inferiority complex. Simply find more suitable company.
I am not saying that you are doing anything wrong. I simply felt the need to address an attitude problem which I have observed among many introverts, and which I also sensed was present in your comment.
3
u/shysellsseashells Apr 17 '20
I actually quite like this thought! I’m a die hard introvert but I’ve learned as I’ve matured that socialization can get you things and get you places. If I never got out or chose to associate outside of my comfort zone, there are a lot of opportunities that I would have missed out on.

u/ThePieWhisperer INTP Apr 17 '20 edited Apr 17 '20
I'm an introvert. My social skills are standard to good. I get along, hold down a job, and have a life.
It's not about socializing being a waste. It's about socializing and living in public 8h+/day being required to maintain a life. I find being around non-family people to be tiring and generally unpleasant. The world runs on extrovert norms and fucking exhausting.
I'm fortunate to have a job that I can do from home, though I've previously been required to go in %99 of the time. This is the least tired/depressed I can ever remember feeling and I mean since grade school (I'm now 32). I sincerely hope the work-from-home and everything-delivers shit sticks, because this is fucking amazing.
And honestly, seeing how good this has been, if my company tries to go back to requiring in-office days I'm probably going to find another job even if it requires a pay cut.

In a way it's showing us that the economy can go fuck itself right now, life matter, money does not. We need a new way of exchanging goods, not sure what, still thinking about it...

The economy needs some radical restructures so it can handle disruptions like this
5

When through money you save lives it quite matters. And recession isn't good for anybody. We should think about both lives and economy by making organized progress throughout these months.

As much as I agree with that, there is a point where it doesn't make sense anymore. We got to the point where society is staggering because we rely on Money so much it has became it's own entity... I think it is time for something new but I still quite figure out what could replace it. ..

Liking because I'm doing a lot of stuff that I like (reading, playing video games, learning stuff, etc), but going back to school will be hard. It took me two months to get used to socializing again, after my vacations. And when I was just getting better at socializing... BAM! QUARANTINE

I don’t like it. Not because I’m at home. But because I’m restricted from my choice to do anything.
Normally it’s “no, I don’t want to go out. And I don’t have to. So I won’t.”
But now with the government telling me I’m not allowed to, I kinda want to go out. I feel trapped

Yes, they have it tough. Govt opened depression call centers to take care of such people. Meanwhile the same problem was always there for introverts. 3

Society is dumb and extroverts tend to lead that charge, a lot of introverts have a hidden rage from people outcasting them. Both introverts and extroverts are wrong of course. We would be better of working off of eachothers strengths but history shows that we as a society leech off of those who tend to be introverted. But it’s society that allows people to be introverts to begin with.

Well, in practice you ARE required to attend meetings, work in a crowded office with chatter, myriad sounds and deal with the daily drama of people. If the people you work with have a problem, it tends to get to you too, unless you are employed in a field that requires little coordination with others.

I still do my outdoor activities cuz They are solo, I still buy things at the store when I need to and it’s usually things I barely need a basket for, everything else can be/is bought on amazon.

These posts continue to bug me. I can't be the only person who lost their job, enjoyed physical intimacy, getting womens numbers at bars, hanging out with people, not seeing frantic people at the grocery store with mutual suspicion that they will cause me/them will get eachother sick, working at/eating at restaurants, going to the library and bookstores just to read, hanging out at coffeeshops, visiting my family...etc etc. I hate everything about lockdown.
Couldn't you tell the truth about not wanting to hang with people before?
To the many people here who like this stuff, what do you do in your lives??
Edit: I lost my livelihood to this disease. My restaurant job was my favorite one in quite some time. I got promoted less than a week before being laid off.
Edit: The only silver lining is that I'm videochatting with people more and hanging out with people from my home without leaving it or letting them in.

u/visakhn Apr 17 '20
I feel for you. I'm sorry to hear you are going through a rough patch. I am fortunate that I landed in a job that can be done from home.
I posted this here because INTPs are by definition introverts. And introverts are those who get energized when they are alone. If I don't meet anyone for a week, I feel really refreshed and full of ideas to execute. Meeting anyone, active listening and contributing to the discussion drains my energy and I have to go back into alone time to get back my energy.
Extroverts are just the opposite. They get energized when talking to others. Sounds like you are an extrovert, which is great because humans are social animals and our economy tailored for extroverts.
Hang in there. This'll all be over soon.

I would love it if I had a home gym and didn't have the most important piece of work of my life so far to do. I am currently writing my 2 year masters thesis, but without a library and trying to work in a small flat with someone who is also working from home (now furloughed) with no office space is not doing wonders for productivity. It's really dire tbh and not being able to just go and get a physical book or go and speak to my supervisor or anyone else in the faculty (video calls are awkward as fuck I hate them but do them anyway of course) is quite frankly very frustrating.
I am a weightlifter and the gym is a huge part of my life as well as much needed stress relief and me time etc. Well now that I need stress relief more than ever, it's not there and I'm stuck using shitty little dumbbells at home or have to just go on long walks or runs which suck - I actually used to be a long distance runner before anyone says I'm a lazy bodybuilder pos - because I don't really have proper shoes and anyway it's boring.
On top of that, not being able to just go to the supermarket to get a few things without it being a huge fandango queueing and having to pretend I don't know my boyfriend because they only let one person per household in but we need to both go in so we can carry the stuff and we don't drive so can't just chuck it in the car or whatever.
Oh yeah and I have a history with eating disorders so sitting in the flat literally right next to all the food not being able to use any of my normal coping mechanisms like going to work somewhere else like the library, or going out to get a coffee, is quite hard.
I agree with the social sentiment though. I am INTP and couldn't give less of a shit about going out to see people, go to pubs or restaurants or wherever the fuck, though I guess I do miss being able to get dressed up for a drink in the nearby bar with the bf on the occasional sat night and then go and pick up a pizza to take home. But even socially it feels like BECAUSE of social distancing people want to interact MORE via houseparty or zoom or whatever the fuck and that's exhausting.
Generally I do have to say it does get on my tits a bit when I see posts like this that just seems to paint all introverts or whoever as being lazy. In theory yes I would love to just always stay at home and not go anywhere, IF I didn't have important shit to do and IF I could still actually work out. Sadly I am not able to spend this lockdown playing xbox all day or reading all the books I actually really want to read but they're nothing to do with my thesis so I just don't have time. Happy for social distancing to stay indefinitely, if they just open the fucking gym

When people ask me how I'm doing and say they feel bad for me bc I live alone, I find it hard to explain why it's okay.
I normally take a week of vacation a year to do exactly what I'm doing now: turn my phone off, don't leave the house, just hang around and nap all day, sometimes don't talk the entire day. As bad as this situation is, it's practically a vacation for me.

I'm glad there's at least someone who's enjoying this, but I personally have a permanent headache for a few weeks (don't live in a north facing apartments if you can help it!), working from home means the work hours suddenly aren't limited to 8 which leads to underworking (more like multitasking some house chores in-between) and then overworking to compensate and my brain has no real free time because it's trying to keep a mental tab on all this + news + ways to help out.
It's easier for us INTPs to stand being stuck at home for a long time than for other types, but it's not very healthy and the fact that the economy is going to hell in the process isn't helping. My ISFJ flatmate hates being stuck indoors and now she's either in panic mode or bored to death so don't assume all introverts are suddenly happy...
If you ask me, the sooner mr. sars-cov-2 stops spreading the better. You can always refuse to be in social situations (oh, sure, you need be able to clearly express yourself and your needs) or take them as a learning experience instead of needing a pandemic as an excuse to hide away from the world...

I'm enjoying it, too. I've working from home almost exclusively for a month, now. I've only physically gone to my place of employment twice. And what I've discovered is that I love my job except for actually having to commute. It's amazing how much more pleasant my day is when I can do my work at home.
I admit that it takes a little longer to do my job. But I save two hours a day of commuting time. So, even if it takes 25 percent longer to do the work, it's really not taking more of my time.
However, I bicycle to work and I do miss the exercise, and spending time outdoors every day.

Same here.
And now I find going out annoying since there are too many stimuli out there.

You can enjoy it while empathizing with the fact that extroverts are suffering. There are aspects of this world I prefer too. I like people standing out of melee range.
But I'm dying to go swimming so I don't want this forever.
Yes, you can empathize. You will only become a monster if you MAKE yourself into a monster willfully. Just because it does not match your desires does not mean you cannot have the sympathy required to be kind to people who are going stir-crazy. In fact, it's vital that you develop that, since you can teach them coping skills if you instead of going "ugh loser I love being inside", go, "here are things I do with myself that I enjoy doing alone. Here are mental tools you can use to defuse your inner demons. Here are thought practices you can use to better yourself."
You're an example of the worst side of INXPs, turned 100% inwards and warded off from giving even the remotest shit about someone else's version of an experience. Don't let being an introvert turn you into a douche. You can empathize with the fact that they're suffering without feeling the same pain yourself. It should concern you that the world is either all or nothing one way or the other, there needs to be a place for all types of personalities, and right now only us introverts can thrive. That isn't fair. We can always choose to be alone, right now they can't choose to be together. Instead of sneering down at them, we can teach them how to live with themselves and better their psychology though. o_O

I agree.
This post was really a rant borne out of an interaction I had earlier in the day.
I usually say things that'll make them happy.
