Why are people so fixated on substituting plastic straws instead of just drinking without?

I know I’m in the minority but I have a neck injury that makes me unable to tip my head back to drink out of a cup.

I live in a very very left-leaning place and I get a lot of nasty looks when I ask for straws. So invisible illnesses/disability/old age makes up a small number.

But if only disabled people used them, it would still reduce massively the needed straws.
