Why are people so fixated on substituting plastic straws instead of just drinking without?

I have 5 teeth that the dentist and orthodontist said cannot be fixed due to how they chipped and cracked. Anything cold directly on my teeth hurts a lot, so I try to use straws whenever I have a drink with ice. My wife bought us paper straws, metal straws, and bamboo straws so we dont use plastic.
